Agreed, my suspension settings are surprisingly different Fromm So Cal tracks to ones around Portland.

If indeed it's say 20 hours - and indeed the kx450f has the couple issues it had - I DO feel that sort of stuff should be included against a bike. Years back people said all I worked on/liked were yamahas - but the reality was they were all I DIDN'T have to work on - making them a GREAT long term value despite minor handling quirks.

Then all I "worked" on cared about were kawis - which was half true - all I WORKED on were kawis - they broke a lot!

When you buy a bike - THESE days I think it's all emotional with consumers. What the FEEL is best for them trumps any other consideration.

But looking at 50 hour cost and 100 hour cost can't be overlooked IMHO if you love to ride. No shootout is really addressing that because it's hard to do so accurately - not enough bike sample size.

I have a great friend who has been involved with a magazine build that got "rave reviews" - when the reality was the build blew up at hour 2 - had nothing but tuning issues, was slow right out of the gate - and was an all around POS

Somehow the magazine article gushed about it - imagine that.


All the bikes are good - all can win a race, so pick your favorite attribute and buy it for that.


Have a look at the Honda clutch cover in the vid. Looks more than 20 hrs in the wear

I don't think it's fair that the KTM won even though they apparently didn't like it AND they had to modify it to make it better. Aren't shootouts all about comparing stock bikes? Are they honestly saying that it's worse than 2018 but STILL better than any other bike out there? KTMActionMag

I like MXA and thier approach to not only who won and why but what it's like to live with the bike after the newness wears off.

I don't even bother to check out intro day ride reports where a rider might put a couple of laps on a bike. To me that just muddies the waters.

I remember back in the day when new bikes needed to be "fixed" before, during and after test riding. No one seemd to have a problem with modding a bike then and getting the info out to the masses.

their analogy was HARDLY "spot on" there Mr. tk2stroke....that weight even if correct would all be up high...the bikes that do weigh more than the ktm/husky the extra weight is spread out....plus EVERY other publication talks about how certain other bikes FEEL lighter than the ktm/husky when riding...so NO, maybe YOU get a clue (or at least a calculator)!!

We now have 5 or 6 shootouts with similar results to each other that are completely different to MXAs results. Are we to assume those shootouts are wrong (and the dozens of participating test riders opinions)? Common sense tells me something is off with this MXA result. Is it me or do they also seam arrogant about it?

MXA does come across rather condescending. I'm not sure the results are really that different though. RMZ was 6th, the other 5 were distributed in there. YZ was near the top as with the others. They said the KX was leading the way until they had some issues with the bike. Clutch if I recall? They said the CRF had some quirky handling, just as many others stated. Listening/reading to all the other riders on the other tests they all say how close the bikes are and how difficult it is to pick an order. MXA did like the Husky and KTM more than others, though individuals in the other shootouts did like those two.

One thing I'm noticing about different shootouts and MXA was rather honest about in theres...some shootouts are based on the needs of really fast riders and/or "pros"...I completely understand how they could rate the KTM the way they did under those circumstance.

In our shootout, here at Vital, we had a broad spectrum of riding skills and it was reflected in the different opinions & ratings.

I love the fact that you guys have such a range of riders at different skill levels. What works for pros and what they like doesn't exactly transfer over to other skill levels. Their opinions helps a bit, but it's nice to see what works better for each skill level and what each level likes and doesn't like about each bike.

I like MXA but I want to see lit pro and more objective stuff. 15 lbs difference is objective. Weight, hp, price and lit pro times would be nice. "Feels light" idk, dual exhaust is a stupid gimmick. A list of things that broke on the bike would be nice.

Has anyone posted a shootout with lit pro times. Im fine with drilling holes in the ait box that would not affect my purchase.

It never ceases to amaze me how wound everybody gets over these tests lol. MXA comes right out and tells you that this is their opinion and you might not like it. As always and especially for most of us weekend warriors pick your favorite color and mod it until you are happy or broke or both Wink

I read and Like all the tests and I would read 5 more or 10 more if I could, but 1 question that I like to hear the testers asked , is what bike do you think you had the fastest lap on. And then hearing there actual lap times on all the bikes ,
And to keep it real , I think they should do like 3 fast laps on each bike in like all within an hour or so to eliminate the track changing to much
And take the top lap from each bike.

However, this years MXA ratings and opining seem very "Pro-oriented" to me.
