Best thread I've ever read on Vital. EVER!!! Two observations if I may. 1. Anybody that would even think of protesting him has no sense of pride whatsoever and doesn't deserve to be involved in this sport. An ass-whoopin' would be duly deserved... 2. Somebody get this kid some retro JT gear. I'm just sayin'. Wink

Man, I wish I was close to there. Gimme that engine. New fresh crank, piston, rings, clutch. Port job that just focuses on port area with very small changes to port timing, a touch more compression with a head cut and mod... Bore the carb a mm... That thing would be a reliable CANNON. Go over the whole bike, make sure everything is tight and fresh, and then watch the kid kick arse on a 28 year old bike. Man this is cool. I cant believe how well he rides it. Enzo must have done a great job on the suspension, because you can see its not nearly as soft and wallowy as they were stock. Frikkin cool.
Why not a 2nd hand KTM125 39mm PWK carb? better mixer than the ol' PJ. I swapped one from my 125EXC to a 93KX250 I restored a couple of years back. Worked a treat.
And maybe someone could sling him some factory rubber for LL's if he makes it. Who's to know? If I was a little more finacial I'd definately get a mail order tire send down to him just to help.
Good on Ross from Enzo for helping with the suspension too.

Simply awesome! when i was that age some 12+ years ago, i could not afford a new bike, i acquired an 84 cr250RE, rebuilt it and raced it for two years against the modern bikes... never was really good on it, but i loved it, got laughed at and teased, but it never bothered me. Eventually the bottom end blew and i sold it.. regretted it to this day... today i saw this thread and it put a huge smile on my face!Smile reminded me of my youth.

So i went on craigslist and to my surprise one was available locally for cheap....well i just brought home another 84!!!Cool Woohoo been looking for one for almost 2 years now.. what a day.

Once again way to go man! you are a true inspiration.

I still think it's awesome but I'm just saying I wouldn't give him any money. If he races motocross on that level he doesn't need my money as much as I do. It's a double edged sword too because people want to help him out to see him race the old bike but hopefully someone doesn't offer him a better bike to ride! Unless it's one of RJ's old factory bikes of course.
I'm scanning this thread front to back, and I'll be damned if I can find where anyone here asked you to give him a red cent?

Please run along now....

I call it a tie w/ the one where the dude buys a CR250 (or was it 500?) off craigslist and takes it to the track w/o touching it and races. Then they also do a follow up after doing a little work on the bike and race it again. That was epic!

Awesome story, I'll send him some dollars. My 2011 RMZ450 is gathering dust while I ride my '79 KX250, I can relate.

The young lad will get more coverage if he rode that bike than if he updated. It would be a negative for him to change in terms of exposure.
The interest for LL's has just grown way more than normal

I agree...I think he should stick it out on the ole trusty CR....he would get A LOT more attention at LL on that thing! It would be cool to see some companies come together to help him at least make this bike as reliable/rideable as possible:

Tires - Some tire company needs to hook the kid up with plenty of fresh tires

Bearings - replace all bearings in that bike...I can only imagine what difference that alone would make

Misc. - Supply him with some bars, grips, chain, and sprockets...last thing he needs is a chain snapping at LL!

Suspension - From the video, he has an Enzo decal on the fork tube...they should service and get it all fresh for LL

Brakes - Some company supply him with new brake pads and get some fresh brake fluid pumping through there

I'm not saying to go "hot roding" everything such as motor, exhaust, etc....just go through the bike and get it fresh.

WHAT A COOL STORY!!!!

why is it that everyone thinks they need to change up his set up at this point? He has done extremely well on what he has at the moment. I say run that bitch cause that's what he's used to and it appears to be set up for him. No one knows the real story/history with the bike. Just because it's 28 yrs old doesn't mean it's clapped. Could have been a barn find recently? Who says it needs to be rebuilt? Dude must have some confidence in it to hop into a LL qualifier in two classes on it. It appears to be all he has as a back up bike and he's good witth it and good with it.

Get this kid some money to get to Lorettas for the week, some fresh gear, some fresh tires, new top end, chain and sprockets and a clutch the week before and turn him loose!

Good Luck Kid ride the wheels off that thing!

@RealRupertX: Jerry Robin is more popular in motocross right now - than a TwoTwo Tablecloth.

That's cool and all, but technically, is that bike legal for LL's?
It has to meet homologation rules and on older bikes, I believe that includes something like a 5-year exclusion rule, where a bike is no longer homologated after 5-years, basically because you can't get them any longer and they're not readily available...there isn't 500 units in showrooms for sale.

Again, I think it's bad ass what the kid did, but I do not think the guy can legally race that bike
It's amateur racing and that's all he has. Who will protest him?
Who would do that? Anyone that thinks he "might" beat them.

If there's an angle to find a problem, any parent forking out the money for the LL process will protest Jerry in a heartbeat if they think there's even a slight chance at getting him DQ'd.

And for anyone thinking this is a ploy, or gimmick you're uneducated and don't know the family. Jerry's older brother raced that bike for a couple of years before he hopped on and could barely touch the ground..

Good kid, fast kid, nice family, and making an older model bike work better than a lot of high dollar multi bike riders have.

Someone on here has to have a low hours 85 CR250 maybe get him another bike for a backup but please don't take him off the classic iron. Thanks for the inspiration just dusted off the 83 480 last night. My body will hate me after but I'm going to ride again. Going back to my roots for a little deja vous all over again........

love how this family see's no need to keep up with the Jones's since they are "beating" the Jones's and if they are not allowed to race a 28 year old motorcycle it would be a sad state of affairs on all counts.

Him looking a bit vintage in one of the shots I took while making the Video.

Love seeing all the support for Jerry. Those saying harsh, or negative things about him, should meet him, watch him ride, and talk to his friends / family beforehand.

No offense to MSR, but the boy would look dashing in a set of Bailey replica gear. Smile
6/18/2013 8:01am
Wow uh, I'm sorry everyone got so offended by what I said. All I did was look up his area qualifier results and see that he was riding a Yamaha and a Honda. The video and original post made it sound like he is one of those guys that races locally on a bike that's 20 years old because that's all he can afford. Like my posts said, I think it's cool what he's doing and I guess I'll keep my opinion to myself next time.

His bike is legal in the two classes he is riding in, so they can protest all they want.

Hey Jerry. My wife's cousin has a 1985 Cr 250 that still has the original plastic and most likey the original tires, perhaps less that 20hrs on it. It's bee leaning against a wall in their Barn in Salmon Arm British Colombia Canada for 15 years....It would make a great "spare" bike for your trip to loretta's, or a great base to build another 85 Cr 250 race bike.

Good luck Jerry! Stick with this 85 CR250 and you'll be the biggest news that comes out of LL's this year, all you need is one good moto finish. It's a sponsor's dream, you'll be the talk of the town.

This is about as core as it gets. I went riding with my dad this past Father's Day , he's on an 03 cr 250 I'm on an 02 125. New bikes wouldn't have increased our fun factor at all. Going wfo on a 125 makes you feel like a hero.

Best of luck to this young man. The most badass thing I've seen in a long time.
