If somebody gave him a better bike would he still have to ride the '85 because it was what he originally qualified on?

Maybe he just had access to this bike. Either way, its a motocross bike (two-wheels, suspension, engine, etc.) and if he is used to it, feels comfortable on it, and can ride it fast then why not race it. Smile

No. You just have to race the same bike you sing up with at LL's. Can't change bikes once it starts. So if he gets a newer bike he can race it no problem.


I use to race a Dinosaur - 98 CR 250 in 99, 00, 01, 02 with no problems on the bikes being older. The only drawback would be is if you have a mechanical problem, you will be without parts and be out of luck.

i think he should race the old 85' at loretta's. No fun in getting a new bike....doin it on the old steed is much more enjoyable to watch and follow.

I loved mine! But I bought it from an old timer who had done some good mods to it. Ohlins shock, Simons anti-cav forks, full PC motor (before PC was the big deal). The bike was awesome, but maybe because his guy had maintained it so that it was much better than new.

Just got off the phone with him. Seemed like a really nice kid. We have given him the opportunity to live and train at South of the Border MX, free of charge! Hope he gets the opportunity to take advantage of it!

Yea no matter his motives look what it has done for him in a few short days. I really hope he's able to make a run at some national titles. Certainly in the 2-stroke B/C he has to be considered a front runner.

That's a seriously awesome move by you guys! Well done! Now the big question becomes, does he go with old faithful or does he accept a new bike if something presents itself. Whatever he is on, we know it has to be 2 stroke for at least one class and I would think he'd not jump to a 4 stroke for the other class with the difference in bike. I think it's an accomplishment to do what he has done so far!

That's the great thing about MC racing. Its 75% rider, 25% bike. Whereas car racing is 75% car, 25% driver.

It has to meet homologation rules and on older bikes, I believe that includes something like a 5-year exclusion rule, where a bike is no longer homologated after 5-years, basically because you can't get them any longer and they're not readily available...there isn't 500 units in showrooms for sale.

Again, I think it's bad ass what the kid did, but I do not think the guy can legally race that bike
Dave Jones won Loretta's in 2010 with a 2003 kx 125. So much for homologous, should just name that the GAY rule instead.

The manufactures don't like people getting the idea that they don't "NEED" a new $8500 bike every year. That being said, I wish this kid the best and if he gets a paypal going, I am in.
