I finished listening to the race review podcast Pulp puts out about Washougal. I think Steve is way off base with the Deegan stance on getting an American on top of the box and winning stuff. Sports are full of Nationalistic pride. IMO one thing all great sports to is cultivating the "sport" in there home country, then sending there best to compete on the international stage. For example, I am not sure if Steve has heard of the "Olympics" or if he has heard of the "World Cup". He also seems to be very proud of Hockey and the roll Canada has played there. Lastly, I'm not sure his stance on Motocross of Nations.
Don't get me wrong he has great content and I love his shows, but he needs to be careful not to become the "problem" here. He seems to be mixing national pride with racial issues and this is the line he has to back away from. Having Stew in call races and the Love he is shown by the fans shows in my mind that most fans are not against him. I know in the past there where some issues. In my opinion if a venue and fans at said venue have this type of disrespect for riders MX sports should consider if they want to hold events there.
I agree with him on the fans being disrespectful to riders on the podium. That is disrespectful. But, if we want moto to be be a international sport and keep growing, national rivalries should be a thing.
Being "Pro-America" is under attack constantly these days. Steve is out of line.
Like others said in the previous "dumgeoned" thread...it's nice to see a young kid be "patriotic". My niece and nephew are "embarrassed" to be Americans.... they can GTFO and live elsewhere for all I care.
Look at the womens USA soccer team....most of them had sour-pusses and wouldn't sing our national anthem recently. Sickening. This is who we've chosen to represent our country. The other nations were proudly singing their anthems.
Kudos to Haiden.
OP makes a good point about the idiots flipping off/disrespecting foreign riders.
I wonder if this thread will survive considering what happened with the other one.
I agree with your post. If anything Matthes stoked to fire on some fans taking the whole nationality too far. Even insinuated that there could be some questionable riding in the final rounds of the season. What’s mattes going to do at MXdN?
US Nationals are not the Olympics, MXDN, or MXGP
The Shop
I think you can have pride in your country while also respecting other competitors.
disclaimer: I’m American but cheer for ferrandis and Marvin. I was also a big DV fan ever since I saw is first heel clicker at Anaheim. But when MXDN rolls around I cheer for the USA
The last American to win the 250 class was AC in 2019. Non-American riders won both coasts in SX this year, and they're leading the motocross championship as well. And two out of three overall winners in the 250 class this year are non-Americans. It's been a while since an American has won AMA 250 motocross. Fair enough if US fans get excited about Deegan being American.
They don't have to be for op point to be a good one. When Jeffrey Herlings came to race a national in 2017, everyone was interested in how he would stack up against the best U.S. riders. Before that, DeSalle came in 2010 and fans wanted to know how Dungey would do against him. in the 80s and 90s, at various points, riders would cross the pond to race. We all wanted to see how they would stack up against each other, often times with fans wanting their rider to win. Stefan Everts came over and raced a couple supercrosses and a national.
It's highly unlikely Steve would be saying anything if a rider from another country had said the same things, imo. Yet if you go on social media, there are a lot of Europeans and Australians saying U.S. riders suck and that we can't win at our own series, etc.
It's a natural tendency, especially in competitive sports, to root for your own countrymen.
I think JT had the most balanced opinion in that discussion. I’m Australian and I wasn’t offended at all by Deegan being patriotic, he wasn’t being disrespectful toward non-Americans, just a patriotic kid who loves his country… and is building bits of patriotic content for his channel in the hope it adds to the narrative for a spot on the MXDN team 😜
libs are trying so hard to make it racist to wave american flags and be proud of your country. its getting tiresome and people are getting sick of them. hope deegan doubles down and pushes his americanism more each weekend
i always harp on matthes and will continue to do so. dude had his ass chapped over that for no reason. you can tell he's a liberal pussy bag
it would make more sense for Deegan to talk about Americans winning if the foreigners mentioned their countries when they won.
Jett and Hunter are the ultimate baby faces, Danger Boy Ricky Bobby is playing the heel, just chill out and enjoy the kayfabe it's fun.
U-S-A is like the best chant there is.
I get Steves point but he was pretty bad at explaining his stance.
There is definitely something not positive about creating a landscape where you try to gain fans on the basis of your birth place compared to your main competitors. Especially when every single event/race is in said country. You can't compare this situation to for an example F1 where they race in what, 20 different countries?
There is nothing wrong with being patriotic. But when you try to use it against your competitors it gets dirty and it's not a road i would use.
Imagine if the Lawrences would be Japanese. And Factory Yamaha rider starts using these kind of tactics against the nice Japanese siblings?
Imagine being at a baseball game and an American pitcher is up against a Puerto Rican hitter and the crowd starts chanting USA, and the pitcher joins in. It’s just lame, we all live here, we all love America. It’s not an international series with different countries facing off. Ricky and James never chanted USA when they beat Reed. Deegan can say that stuff if we win MXDN.
Deegan is awesome. I respect all these guys but listening to foreign accents from the podium week after week is getting old. Murica! Let's start a chant! USA USA USA USA! Ha Ha go ahead and start your down voting.
I've thought the same as Steve the last couple races. Its gone beyond being proud to be an American to trying to win the crowd over and have them hate a bit on riders not born in the US.
Its like they are trying to create drama, because drama sells. Its all part of the Deegan brand they are constantly messaging.
On a lighter note, wouldn't it be funny as hell when Deegan is on the podium and starts doing his "Its nice to be an American" routine...JT concludes the podium interview by sayin, "Thanks Haiden for whooping their commie asses"...ala Larry Maiers
He's canadian what do you expect lol.
I truly believe it's a deliberate tactic from Brian.
I feel like they try to make ppl 100% on board or the not. He has an us vs them mentally.
Brian has seen a way to divide the fans. And if going for the USA tactic. It will make impartial usa based fans jump on board coz If they root for the Lawrence's now they will feel unloyal to usa.
Pit Row
What a well thought out and nuanced opposition you’ve presented here.
I totally agree with Matthes on this take. It has nothing to do with being anti-america or someone getting their feelings hurt. It doesn't come off as genuine and I thought that the first time he said it on the podium at red bud. He never brought up being a proud American when he was on the podium in supercross. This all started after he and the rest of the class got beat by Hunter for half the season. He needed to come up with something to start this whole nonexistent rivalry. It might be because he grew up on you tube but half of his antics come off as manufactured for click bait.
Yes, the flag isn’t a tool to divide people / play head games in a sport.
God forbid people chant USA while at Redbud during 4th of July weekend when Deegan claims his first overall...
Between the Deegan stuff and Steve complaining about the two-stroke challenge (“calm down two stroke people, nobody cares”), the first hour and a half of the Pulp show last night was a bit of a bitchfest.
You could argue the most popular racers in recent years have all been foreign born. Reed, Roczen and now Jett. If the AMA series didn’t welcome others in with open arms it would be one thing but it’s not like that. Old man Deegan is finding an angle for more marketing and he is using it. It’s all about making the kid more popular.
A lot of guys are dicks to the French but that just seems more cultural if anything.
How about a 17 year old is super hyped on going 1-1 beating some of the fastest dudes in the world, and let his emotions flow on the podium?
I think Matthes' take is whack and sounds ridiculous. Trying to create a narrative that isn't there. Irony.
Steve sucks. Plenty of content out there to take the spot if he burns his own show down. First complaining about fireworks on the 4th, and now this.
I don’t understand why some people get so bent out of shape over it. One of my greatest race memories as a spectator was going to the Italian Grand Prix at Monza a decade ago and being in the crowd of the Italians going absolutely bananas for Ferrari because they’re Italian.
Yeah, American fans are probably going to cheer for the American in the championship just like I would expect the Aussies to be cheering for the Lawrence brothers. Haven’t there been a ton of Australian flags in the crowds this year? Does Matthes have an issue with that?
Guess we see now why he doesn't seem to care about the mx does nations at all!! Too much pride in your country!!

AMERICAN motocross…as in U.S.A. And little Deegs took a moment to recognize that an American FINALLY won a National…which is actually a compliment to Hunter! Because Hunter, an Aussie, has been whoopin some American, Japanese, French…etc. ass!
I have no idea how Steve is able to make drama out of this…unless that’s his intention?
Remember the time hunter and Jett both podiumed and brought australian flags onto the podium? I do. I also remember not crying about it.
