Technical discussions on vital offer an interesting insight into how many of us ingest information in the current world. People with expertise and technical background posting alongside people just winging it and going with their gut. Both sides being completely confident, makes it very hard to discern what’s based on sound technical reasoning unless you already have expertise in the field. Sort of a catch 22

I have learned over time owning several KtM”s, that this bolt needs to be checked often. I had this bolt break on my 17 FE 450, the head of the bolt was completely missing! I have seen the bolt loosen up also. Another thing to consider is the sequence in which the top clamp bolts get tightened. The top 17mm headed bolts gets tightened first, before this 10mm headed bolt, then the upper clamp bolts. I could see if the sequence was not done correctly, it could put unnecessary torque on the suspect bolt. This is an area that KtM...

This is an example of one of the things that used to be super-frustrating to me. People want insider info. But then an insider comes here, speaks openly, and spends what was probably a fair amount of time crafting a perfectly reasonable explanation. Then he gets told he's wrong. Eventually, the insider(s) stop responding, and the vacuum is filled with nonsense from people who are speculating, rather than speaking from actual experience.

Ha! Yeah I was at a metzeler tire intro the weekend after that race and I was told the same thing. But I think it was the tires he set pole on, not the race winning tires. You want the 3M brand grey rubberized grip tape in a 3" width. As 40acres said above, make a template. I use a sheet of copy paper first, using a wide carpenter pencil to "shade" in the shape. Then cut that out. Check/refine the fit until correct, then transfer that to a thin cardboard sheet (think cereal box). You can then use that template and a ball-point pen to make as many as you want for cheap! Note: they only last about a ride or two...
