Did you guys not watch the broad cast? They said he was being transported to the hospital… NOT the medical rig, they had him on the side of the track damn near the entire moto.

Damn that looked bad. I sure hope he’s ok, whether he comes back or retires. Eli, if you read this, know there are a LOT of people rooting for you around the world.

I pause the recent IG credit SethSold reel from video and appear the force of Eli lawn darting forward was pushing his head back. When I paused the video I could not believe my eyes! Didn’t look to bad on the broadcast. Full extension of his neck backward??? Or optical illusion? Here’s the reel. https://www.instagram.com/reel/DY-oWw1yqul/?igsh=ZWp4NmlucHd5Y3Fy

Here’s the paused video OUCH IMG 5224 2

holy shiiiiiiiiiiit, this is bad, brutal. He got lucky to still be walking.

The last time I saw pictures of the inside of the medic rig, all they had for Xray’ was a mini C-arm. We use those for extremity work in the hospital in the OR. You might get a half asses C-spine picture, but it will be fairly useless. They would get better Xray images from a mobile Xray machine. Maybe they have one now, IDK. CT is the gold standard for spine imaging. We don’t even do c-spine Xray’s in our trauma bay anymore, and haven’t for years. Patients go as soon as they are stable to the CT scanner attached to the trauma bay for imaging. (Level 1 trauma center btw and I’ve been a tech for 25 yrs). The next step for spine injuries would be a MRI or a myelogram, if the patient get a MR. And the portable CT machines aren’t real great either. I’d be shocked if they really had one bouncing down the highway and back roads all over the country. And even if they did, I’d be surprised if they had someone to run it. It’s not just pushing buttons, contrary to poplar opinion.

And remember you’re talking about a patient who is already at a hospital. Bouncing them around from different imaging modalities is convenient and very necessary. The top priority for a gravely injured rider at a motocross is to get them to the hospital, not dick around with imaging.

After seeing that,  he’s obviously fortunate that he didn’t break his neck. What made it worse as that he didn’t see it coming.

Just like Dungey before him. Toward the end of career with a neck injury(hopefully no breaks found this week)… this sucks man. Hope it really is nothing bad or serious. As much as I want to see him back and battling everyone at the front, I wouldn’t blame him for calling it after the last 3 crashes he’s had.

That was not good and he is super lucky that didn't break his neck and even worse from that. I slowed it down and his visor digs into the ground and violently pulls and twists his head back, when he bounces you can see his visor throwing dirt like a shovel. Is the Bell not a magnetic visor?

Thanks for posting that. I was wondering the same thing because it looked like it pulled his head back but his visor didn’t snap off so I assumed it hadn’t.

Everyone gives A-Stars a hard time about how often those helmets lose their visors but this is a great example why.

So he didn't even get transported? C-spine xrays in the medic rig and then on a flight home? Does the medic rig have CT scanner now? Xrays for neck injuries aren't a thing anymore. if you need imaging, you need CT.

Only motorsport I’m aware of that has CT scanners onsite is MotoGP. Not even F1 has one. Largely because it’s not necessary to assess immediate trauma. They’re better off stabilizing and zooming to the nearest hospital.

What good does a trackside CT do if they still need to transport? Better to get a patient to a hospital where the injury can be immediately treated.

They’re looking for internal bleeding mostly. Critical shit that will kill you in minutes.

JT - recent look in medic rig or years ago?

I think we all have learned that the trackside machine isn't too good.

The flagger in the vid didn't look too swift, late to the scene and not directing the riders very well.

Crazy that that visor didn’t break away with all that force being applied to it. I wonder if Bell will be taking a second look at their design after that one.

As much as I would hate to see Eli retire, I completely understand at this point if he were to call it, some of these crashes lately have almost seemed like something is telling him to. He’s given us more than enough entertainment and amazement in the last 16 years.

Blows my mind how some of these flaggers don’t know to go infront of the situation

He was checked out by medical personnel at Pala and is going to go in to see his Dr this week. I don’t believe that he has been to a hospital, but I could be wrong.

This is not a first for him or a few/ several others on here. Freedom of speech (especially on the internet/ social media/ forum boards) has it’s consequences

This might be a bit of a blessing in disguise for Eli. He’s been going all out for over a year now. Taking 4-6 weeks off to get back to 100% might do him well.

Scary stuff. Watching the broadcast, it looked like he pile drove his head into the ground. This view is  so bad.

The last month & a half or so has been rough for Eli. Obviously still one of the podiums guys & will get wins, but dang man, maybe it’s time..

Good question, come to think of it I dont think Ive ever seen a rider with a bell helmet lose their visor. If they dont have it thats crazy.

Theres no mention of it on the bell website

It was few years ago that I saw pictures of the inside. Def after it was a stars. I was pretty surprised to see they were trying to diagnose with a mini c-arm. At that point, just get them to a hospital if it’s remotely serious.

It'd suck to see another great go out. Selfish for me but I hope he stays but pulls back. Does SX, WSX, the odd international event or something. Like Kenny. Although I prefer MX I can see why Kenny, JB etc stopped doing it full time.

It'd be a hard decision/reality to come to terms with when you genuinely enjoy it and you're still one of the best.

I made the mistake of bringing up the caps thing a little while back.

Wandell responded to let me and other folks here know that he has a medical issue that effects his ability to type easily.

An all caps posts is far better than seeing the childish posts made by a few people here.

I know the MedicRig has a flouroscopic wireless C-arm. Is that adequate for diagnosing C-spine injuries? I don't know.

That is the mini C-arm. It’s mostly used in the OR for hand, wrist, ankle and foot surgeries. It’s made for extremities, not spines and such.

There was talk of the teams getting them a legit portable xray machine after tomac fib fracture was missed but I have no idea if it actually happened. Either way the recommendation for C spine injury is CT. Too much can be missed on xray.

Anyone see him in the pits after? Was he walking around? Seems like someone would have seen him unless he did go straight to a hospital, as they seemed to suggest on the broadcast.
