Seems the problem lies more with the tracks than it does with the $10M / year riders. If GH knows every Thursday is pro practice day, why do they let minis/slow ams in? Why not just make it a requirement to have a pro card to be on the track?

I’m pretty sure that if the pro teams want to rent one of the tracks every Thursday, GH would be willing to do that for them. But asking them to turn away business so that a handful of riders can pay $50 each to ride?  Probably not going to make a lot of sense.

Perhaps the teams should join together and try some sort of hybrid standing rental where there are a couple of hours every Tuesday and Thursday that the track is only open for pro card holders. Say 10:30 to 11:30 and 2:00 to 3:00. The rest of the day is ‘normal’ access. The ‘normal’ riders get a couple of scheduled rest periods, the food vendors can plan for peak customers during the rest periods, and everyone has a pre scheduled time to line the fences and watch the pros haul ass without so many rolling roadblocks in the way.

I’m sure that there’s a bunch of reasons why that wouldn’t work, but it might be worth a try for a few months.

I remember practicing at GH with quads out there blowing out all the ruts, now having quads out there with dirt bikes was madness lol

I can't even understand why the track would want that. Maybe its not quite as bad on real hard pack with no prep,  but those quads destroy a motox track.

I get a kick out of calling AMA motorcycle racing a professional sport anyway, most of the grid is barely making Walmart wages doing it in any racing discipline.

Are the pros that are out there on the track unable to afford cheap land to build a track on?

I’m sure if you made 500K+ a year, it wouldn’t be that hard to get with some other riders and go in on some property to have your own track. People that make $60k a year do it all the time.

Some of the quad guys out there would actually be pretty good hitting every jump and making it even more sketchy to get around because they’d want to start dicing with you 😬😬😬

And then you need equipment, dirt, and then someone to maintain it and the property, and then you need irrigation or a water truck, taxes and insurance, power/water, buildings/amenities etc.

There are plenty of nice private tracks that have all that and it don't cost that much once setup.

I was chief bottle washer at a track for 15 years, and the only time we allowed 85s with As or pros was in very controlled circumstances, which was pretty rare.

We would let certain 85 kids go with fast practice once in a while because it actually evened speeds up. The bitch was they got extra practice when they snuck back into 85 sessions.

Oh well, I tried.

Surfing, it’s not like they can close the beach for just the pros. Surf for a contest window. But when a good wave like Pipe, Snapper or Trestles is going off it’s the pros dodging the joes.

Most people pull off the track when the pros start riding. Seen it happen many times. Saw like 20 people on the vet track at Pala once while Forkner was riding on the main by himself w/ Ryno watching. Even guys like Axell Hodges and Justin Bogle were on the vet track because they didn’t want to get in Austin’s way. If you saw how fast he was going you would have pulled off too.

Better question is why the pros tolerate it? What's it cost to rent a track for half a day?

To tackle this I heard on a pod that some tracks are having higher annual fees which make you a part owner of the track to avoid getting sued?

It's definitely a problem either way.

Road Cyclists regularly train in publicly accessible spaces (with many reported incidents of collisions with cars).

Pro mountain bikers train in publicly accessible spaces as well.

How about all the stories of pro skateboarders colliding with kids on push scooters at public skateparks?

Carl Lewis used to train at Archie M. Morrison Track at Santa Monica College which is generally open to the public.

Over the years LeBron's done some workouts in public spaces in Akron Ohio.

I don't know man, if you are an adult at the top of the MX world and you decide to do your motos on a public track with kids on it, you can't be claiming ignorance and pointing fingers when things go awry.

In Australia for JNR riders you aren't allowed to have more than 4 years between the oldest and youngest rider on the track.

Yeah, you kinda conflated 2 totally different scenarios there.  JA21 at Italy MXON was his own fault.   He slow rolled after the finish while others behind him were still racing and coming over the line hot.  Not relevant to this thread.

JA21 at GH after winning the 2018 SX championship and preparing for the Nationals is probably the incident you are thinking of.   He was practicing on the track with the public and collided with an amateur rider and mangled his foot and missed most of the Outdoor series after that.

and the riders were being detoured off the track while a downed rider was being attended to by safety personnel.

If I remember correctly JA21 clipped a slower or parked bike while going around and suffered a pretty bad foot injury.

So they weren't even on the track and JA21 still figured out a way to run into somebody.

You’ve got guys making $10 million a year busting out  practice laps on the same track with kids on 60s and 80s… It’s just a matter of time until one of them is out for the year when some little turd crashes on the backside of a jump or  moves over into the wrong line. I can’t believe this shit is actually real lol. There is not one single other professional sport….

Not to be rude, but I can't see how Perris (or Milestone back in the day) are any good for getting ready for any national level track. Always cracks me up when I see a top guy out there.

That’s exactly what I’m saying. Average joes making an average salary are having their own private tracks with friends.

So why aren’t they doing the same? It must not be much of an issue them then.

Can't tell me Prado couldn't be back east for prep if he wanted.  KTM could have worked something out to have him at bakers, even though he's not a part of that program.  He's choosing to ride on public tracks.

It’s arguably a better workout than piling on bicycle miles. Plus it’s a lot more fun.
