When did homeschooling become a "thing"

I was just talking to a friend, and we were trying to figure out when homeschooling kind of started in motocross. Now it seems like you hear about young racers being homeschooled quite frequently. So, when did it become "mainstream" and what caused it.  Oh, by the way I think it's a pretty bad idea for a lot of reasons but that's a whole different subject.

Cue: Ping or someone else to mention how terrible 'public' schools are...

At any rate, homeschooling explains why so many of the riders are very odd...and cain't read too good neither...

I was homeschooled from 4th-8th for reasons unrelated to moto as I didn’t even ride back then. There are most certainly pros and cons to it just as there is going to a public or private school. To do it solely for the purpose of banking on the fact your kid is the next RC is insane just the same way selling your house and living in a camper for junior to “make it”. One thing I will say about public school is the fact they do not spend the hours they have your children wisely or as productively as they should. I’ll leave it at that.

I don’t know, I went to public school and in grade 12 (16-17yo) I was allowed to go training at motocross tracks, and take a school mate with me, during sports every week. Seemed like well, allocated time to me 😂

I’d argue that the downtime is when kids are socializing and building skills to understand society and how they function in it.  The social aspect alone is a viable skill at a public school.  Sheltering your kid from interacting with people unlike them is not beneficial in the long run IMO.

Homeschooled kids are always a little strange socially.  You ever meet a person and a few months in they mention that they were homeschooled and have an aha moment?

MTF opened around 2003 and I think of that as being one of the first "live and train" type places where homeschooling would be expected. Homeschooling for those who viewed moto as a career was taking off around that time. Not sure if it was popular before that though.

The tragedy of homeschooling got legitimized in 1972, with a Supreme Court decision.
Wisconsin v. Yoder (1972)

RC graduated top of his class🤡……seriously, if you are a prodigy or genius level, then I can see public schools holding you back, or maybe parents/ parent that are educators with a proper curriculum and discipline.,..families taking your kid out of school to chase the Mx/Sx dream? Hella foolish and irresponsible as a parent….if anything public schools teach social skills and how to deal with the lunatics of the real world….

Would like to see a list of all who were home schooled while living/ attending MtF and a “ where are they now “ segment….

Public schools are only good for making friends, and socializing. Nothing else. I bet you won't see a home schooled kid leaving class to go "protest". Because real parents won't allow their kids to be so stupid.

Marty Smith and Tommy Croft went to the same high school.  I remember reading about them driving their 911s to school.  I thought high school MX teams were a semi big deal in So Cal back in the ‘70s.

Schools are not what they were back in the day. Now you have teachers with pride flags, group of kids who think theyre cats, and no critical thinking allowed. You have kids walking out for democrat protest and teachers sleeping with students. Homeschooling has nothing to do with motocross and is more about keeping kids away from the garbage system.

I'm thinking Homeschooling in motocross was started to let the kid ride a lot more. Nothing else. They'll make friends and social skills at the track around a lot better people than what a school pumps out these days. There's a lot less politics at a track than a typical school day.

I have a HS diploma for sale from Albuquerque '74 with honorers, but my parents won't be there to push you.

My PE is for sale too if you want to get into the bridge building game.

Most early colonizer's/settler's communities schools were what many of us would consider home schooling. It's nothing remotely new, in the 1700s if you lived too far from school, mom taught you to read and write. It's always been around to an extant.

I wouldn't blame anyone for pulling their kids out of public schooling these days. The sh*t that some so called "teachers" espouse is friggtin cookoo.

How dare those kids go participate in a very American thing of protesting things they don't agree with! It's probably a good thing that homeschooling wasn't around back in the day, who would have thrown the tea into the bay?

Do you have any actual proof of kids acting like cats? I have been commissioning HVAC systems in several school districts since these claims came out and have seen zero kids shitting in litter boxes. I've seen pride flags, but also trump flags. Personally I don't really care or see why either are an issue. The biggest problem with schools these days are trying to keep extremest people in the public happy while maintaining a stable curriculum as school boards swing from one extreme to the other. People crying over flags or books they don't like that go to school board meetings and bitch about trivial things are the issue.

I was against it. Then Child protection services got involved when my kid was in 5th grade since I took him out 1 hour early twice a week to ride, and they counted that as an absence all the sudden.

Home school is the way to go. It’s all online at your pace. Plus in Florida you get $8k per kid to spend on what ever you want if your kid is homeschooled. Can use it for a $800 Helmet, or for $2,000 month training.

My kid that’s in 7th homeschooled now, would out test my 18 year old that just graduated normal high school

I'm currently working with my kids elementary school to start a biking club to teach kids how to ride off-road with the goal being able to meet at a MTB trail and ride. My hope is to also get hare scrambles setup as a school sport so my kids can letter in high school, kinda like the California model with MX used to be.

Late 90's from what I remember. The whole training facility thing made it even more prevalent.

Public School is completely worthless at this point. The socialization thing used to be a legitimate reason to steer clear of it, but those days are gone.

Twenty years ago you couldn't really be involved in any school sports or other related after school activities. I have a niece that's a three sport athlete with her public school friends, but has also been homeschooled the entire time.

She's got the best of both worlds - no public school bullshit, all the socialization she needs, and from what I can see she's smart AF compared to her peers.

Homeschooling would absolutely be a must if we lived in a large blue run city…can you imagine sending kids to Chicago public school? Or Milwaukee public schools? (Insert any large blue city here…). That would be so awful..

Public school unions only focus on liberal activism and wasting tax payer money on lavish trips..
