I think he's chasing the title he got robbed of... that to me is what's keeping the fire lit.
On wins, it's crazy that if he gets 9 wins this year he would still need 10 next year to tie MC. Tall order!
I would love to see him do it. However, what is the probability? How many guys have won a single main after the age of 30? Tomac has proven to be an outlier but go back and watch James Stewart’s last win and imagine watching it live is there anyone on the planet that would have bet a single dollar that would be his last? I doubt it.
Even if he wins, I could still see him coming back next year. He seems happier than ever, he gels with his team, they respect him and vice versa, his family goes to the races with him, his kids are getting older and can appreciate it more and I'm sure he enjoys sharing that with them. And honestly I believe he wants to battle Jett more, I think he enjoys the challenge and he really seemed to enjoy racing him last year.
73 seems like one of those things you don't hunt, but let come to you as you focus on each next race. Definitely title hunting, though.

He needs to not lose seasons.
I don’t think he is still riding to get 73. I think he is doing because he is having fun at it again, and he even said this in an interview.
I dont understand why 72 wins is the end all, be all record for sx. It should be MC's 7 sx titles. Eli makes my case for me. All those sx wins and 2 titles to show for it
Watching Eli deliver in his 30s is awfully damn fun to watch.
I’m starting to feel sorry for some of the other guys that don’t realize what’s happening right now.
And, let’s not forget…Eli shreds in “The East”, too.
A2 is gonna be interesting if he “Keeps This Up”.
Like many here, I do think he’s mostly after the one title that got away. I can’t see his mind being on the 73. He’s feeling good, still knows he’s fast and now with the way he’s gelling with the pumpkin, he’s really having fun. Just watch the smiles and laughs, etc when he comes off the track after a win.
I thought he would be done this year if he won it…. But if he’s still having this much fun after MX, he very well might be back next year.
Good point Chris. Interesting thought is let’s say Eli gets to like 60 wins and manages to win this title. That would put him at 8 total titles, one shy of RV for second all time.
7 SX titles is probably an even higher bar than the 72, especially because they race more races than MC did
Hunter, KR, Sexton all look to be right there with Tomac. Not gonna be easy to rack up wins.
Really fun to watch the battles so far.
I'm 50/50 on this. It would seem like the best choice to win a 3rd title and then call it... going out on top, like he intended to do back in 2023 before the Achilles. However, he's said multiple times that he wants to keep racing as long as he feels like he can win. And, from the looks of it, he's gonna be able to keep winning for a long time. I think it's going to come down to him changing his retirement criteria, or maybe getting tired of dealing with Jett, assuming he comes back as strong as he was last year.
I almost put more stock in the race wins. It takes outright speed to speed to win races over and over again. You can do everything right and still lose a title due to bad luck (no fault injuries, mechanicals, racing incident). A little better luck and Elie could have 3 or 4 SX titles (2023 achilles & 2017 front brake failure). Dungy and RV each lost a title due to no fault of their own as well.
Tomac has said he's enjoying racing and will race as long as he's enjoying it and competitive. I hope he sticks around another year whether he wins the title or not. I hope KR does as well. The racing is so much more fun when there are a handful of guys who could win any given night and are competing for the title.
Yea…especially with deegan taking over the 450 class next year…🤪
That’s sarcasm for the vitards…
I think I almost view it as 10 wins ≈ 1 title. Like honestly who's had the more impressive career when you think of JS7 or Dungey? ET3 or Webb? Kenny or Anderson?
I still think that 4 title streak of RV2 is as impressive of a feat as any though.
Eli typically does really well in Glendale, Daytona, Denver, and many of the east coast rounds. It's actually kind of rare for Eli to start off the season really strong. Who knows what happens this year, but it is cool watching him make history.
I completely understand your logic. Its an interesting discussion. I'm a titles guy. The ultimate goal is the championship. But you're absolutely correct. You dont stack up dozens apon dozens of race wins without being a bad mfer.
73 missed rounds is a lofty goal but I think k he has what it takes 😂
Pit Row
Et vs Webb? Are you talking sx only?
Yeah, fun discussion. Ultimately, both the wins and titles are tough to get and impressive. You're probably right as far as the top guys go, their ultimate goal is the titles. I guess I just get more excited watching races being won vs a guy stacking consistent points towards the title. Like JS7 and Tomac getting crappy starts and charging to the front for a win vs Dungy stacking points (and plenty of wins) towards titles.
Lots of that though, the Smith incident, Hannah and the water skiing, David Bailey......
100% Was the same with Reeds last win, he won relatively easily, you would never have guessed it’d be his last.
That’s why every single one of Tomac’s current wins should be appreciated. I don’t think #72 is even entering his thoughts.
I'm a huge Tomac fan, but McGrath's dominance was over a shorter time span and far bigger season to championship ratio. Tomac is able to win outdoors too, so one could argue he's more well rounded. Both are great champions, but when or comes to SX Jeremy was unparalleled.
I don’t think he will quit if he wins the sx title this year. The contract extends to a 2nd year if he wins a title. That doesn’t sound like a guy that wants to retire if he wins this year.
Perfectly said.
I wouldn't start the conversation, but he could have at least 2 more wins, maybe even 3.
Daytona the year Brayton won, I think he crashed twice
Vegas in 2017 when he bunched them up
And the round Marvin took him out in 2018 (?)
..not to mention all the Elito Mac moments he has had over the yrs. A1, 2018 when he crashed and pants kept falling, etc.
If he hadn't gotten hurt in 2023 and last yr and those other couple wins he might have another 6-10 wins.
I still dont think he gets there, even though im a long time fan. Long way to go.
He's not chasing 73. He wants that SX Title. But lets be honest. With all this "Jett will beat MC's record" talk...Tomac is a lot closer than Jett is to 73. Scientific odds would tell you its more likely that Tomac gets 73 wins, than Jett gets to 73. Jett is currently on the couch for the 2nd year in a row. 9 supercross wins total over 3 sx seasons isn't a good average.
Tomac is a lot closer than Jett is to 73.
That's normal. Tomac is currently in his 13th season in the 450 class. A full decade more than Jett.
9 Supercross wins total over 3 SX season isn't a good average.
It might not be ideal if someone wants to go after the win record, but Tomac's first few seasons weren't any better.
Tomac's First Three Seasons
2014: No Wins
2015: 3 wins
2016: 1 Win
Four total wins in three years, and here we are today. No one can predict the future. We won't know until they both call it a career.
Only 63 more wins needed to tie at this point. He should get there in another 21 seasons at this rate.
What’s crazy is Eli is at 55 and has never even mentioned Mcgraths record.
