Why did you all expect him to be a lock for a podium or better result? How many wins/podiums does he have in SX in his career?

Because he is steadily getting better, he almost won SMX again.

He is on the same bike as last year with a good base to continue to build on.

He's fast enough to battle for this championship, he's not coming off any injuries and should be ready to step up.

For real. So many guys were saying, "well Jett is out, but Hunter is almost the same speed so he's the next pick" WHAT? Not even close. How many sx wins does he have? None.. And then most wrote off Tomac completely....with 53 wins, Now with 54 wins... Some of the dumbest predictions I've ever heard for Supercross Title picks. Hunter isn't Jett. And there's 4-5 guys that can beat Hunter consistently every night.

4th at the opening round is a great finish. You can't win the championship the first round, but you can definitely lose it. Coming out healthy, with a solid result is a win in my book.

“…there's 4-5 guys that can beat Hunter consistently every night.”

That applies to all the top guys. There’s at least 5 guys that could finish in any order on any given night and no one would be surprised.
That’s why this season is going to be awesome.

He is on the same bike but neither brother made it past Tampa last season. That’s a lot r&d in race conditions they didn’t get.

I don’t think anyone completely wrote off Tomac. There’s more uncertainty whether he can adapt to the new bike or not. I think after A1 there’s more questions than answers. Give it a few rounds.

Right?!

I saw so many people predicting him to win sx this year with Jett out. Nothing Hunter has done on a sx track has ever convinced me that he’s an S tier rider in a stadium.

He is one of my favorites though and I’d love to see him step it up to that level.

I kept on hearing from the commentators that Huntah and Anderson had 'problems' with each other.

I'm aware of the friction between Jett and Ando, but missed Huntah / Ando incidents.

What were / are they - other than say, a Brothers backing of a Brother.

Just curious - I tend to ignore all the Bitch Fighting / Handbags at Dawn crap that floats around.

It’s too early to say that. But AP was never that good stepping into the 450 class. Just think about his first years on the Yamaha 450

what uncertainty? Even to my non expert eyes it was really obvious from the 1st videos of Tomac and Prado running laps at the test facility Tomac was extremely comfortable on the KTM. And he got his cable clutch!

Not sure if you watched WSX or not but his last race the bike/him looked terrible. The bike wouldn't go straight in the whoops, it looked like a pogo stick. It looked like he was having trouble controlling it, and I don't think you could blame it all on the scoop tire he ran, but it was pretty hard packed dirt.

Glad to see he straighten it out though.

I saw a compilation video of his bike getting loose on him, but they obviously got it fixed as none of it was evident in the team intro video.  He also mentioned they did a little tweak between motos @ A1 and made it even better the way he was talking in the interview. He just needs to stay healthy and get good starts to go with the good attitude.

When was the last time you saw video from a rider not looking good at the test track? Same with team intro videos. Pre A1 everyone had a great boot camp and the bike is in a great spot. Results after A1 not good? We’ve got some work to do. If we went off of instabangers and pre A1 talk we’d have a 22 rider tie for first.

Hunter’s specialty is MX.

This. Mx is fresh in everyone's mind before sx starts so going off that it's like, oh Hunter is the favorite. Now if Jett is out this summer too, theres a real discussion to be made that Hunter will win mx. That's a whole different thread though

Who was saying Hunter is the favorite, though? All the ‘media’ I heard said he could be a contender but even then they leaned into the fact he’s never won a race and favored other riders to be the champion.

To be fair, neither was anybody else any good on that Yamaha 450 as they were on their previous ride lol.

Four straight 2nd place finishes. These guys better hope he doesn't get that first win that makes the confidence surge.
