Man I'm really close to pulling the trigger on a leftover 25 450X. Did you go 450 or 250?
450. Compared to the 350 the extra weight has only been noticeable in the tighter single track stuff. I’m contemplating picking up a 250 for strictly mx
That’s another bike I held onto for 5 years that I shouldn’t have. You know it’s bad when you ride an undersprung, non maintained yz 250 and feel like a million bucks on it in comparison
2013 CRF450, I gave this bike a few chances and made a bunch of adjustments, but after a month and a few suspension/chassis tweaks, I was done and let my brother take it over. Bought a KTM300xc and raced LL on it that year on 2014!

Almost. After not having ridden mx in 20 years, I bought a brand new 2002 YZ250. Took it to Glen Helen for my first ride, and after only 3 turns (not laps), I pulled off the track shaken, wondering why I thought this was a good idea! Spent the rest of the afternoon in a field beside the track just getting used to accelerating and braking. Eventually got on terms and kept the beast.
Yes! I've had buyer's remorse about two of my bikes:
The first was a 1998 RM250. I was coming off a winning season on a 1997 YZ125 and decided to go back to Suzuki at the same time I moved up to the 250 class. That was a big mistake. I hated that bike; it was twitchy, weird, and despite all the media gushing over the right-side-up forks, I found them to be not as good as the USDs I remembered from my Suzuki 125 from a few seasons earlier. I also came to the realization that I simply liked Yamaha handling better and I was done with yellow from that point onward. Only raced it once, crashed my brains out on it, done.
The second was a 2004 YZ250F. Fuck. That. Noise.
I rode and raced it all season and could never get used to the 4-stroke irregularities. It had every single problem that comes with old-school thumpers; it was heavy, hard to start, flamed out, endoed when you rolled off the throttle, and was just 100% funky, 100% of the time. I could never get used to it even after a whole season. I should have sold this bike on day two.
1999 Yamaha YZ400. Maybe 5 rides tops. Sold it and went back to a CR250.
Not the first ride, but after 40hrs, which I put on in about 1.5 months. 2008 KTM 200xc, the suspension was atrocious and I realized a 200 was not for me...
Yep, bought a 2023 CRF250R, did one lap at Monster Mountain sold it that weekend, picked up a 24 YZ250F instead (current bike is a CRF250R 2025). Bought a 16 SX150 and sold next day as well, couldnt jive with the 4CS forks and the steel frame.
Not a dirk bike but my MotoGuzzi California Custom 1400. Hadn't rode street bike in about 40 years due to accident on the freeway that was not my fault and changed my mind about street riding. One day last year I was walking past this bike I'd never seen before and fell in love with the looks of it. A couple of days before I was supposed to pick it up I broke my collar bone in such a way that I wasn't able to ride for many months. Then due to health concerns with my wife we decided it would be better for us if I didn't ride. So aside from a few local errands and some short rides around town the bike sits in the garage. So now going to sell it with virtually never having any fun on it. If anyone is interested.
2014 California Custom 1400 Under 9,000 miles.
Damnit… I want it lol. Who mapped it? XPR? And how’s the power compare to a 350?
Not dirt but a 83 Honda cx650 custom. I got the bike like new with almost no miles on it from a guy that bought it new. No wonder the guy never rode it, the motor was terrible and would want to stand up in corners one way and fall over in the other direction, I don't know if it has some thing to do with the v motor that was side ways but standing still and a little rev it would want to flop to the right. I think I put like 300 miles or so and it was gone.
1998 CR250, bought it to make a pre-mod ride. Someone had gone through some mods prior to me, rode it once, hands went numb about about 6 minutes. Tried bar mounts, pegs, fly wheel weight that came with it, no difference. Couldn't imagine riding 1.5 hours in the woods and not having any feeling in my extremities for the next week. Gone just 2 months after I got it. It went around a group of friends before one decided to really try it and see how we would do.
When I was around 16 I was getting bored racing a 250F and wanted to go back to 2-strokes. My dad is a big 2-stroke guy so it took little convincing. The plan was to get a YZ125 and have the engine built. So we get a YZ125 and I knew pretty quickly that no matter how much we put into that little engine it wasn’t going to make the power I wanted. Sold it in a little less than two weeks and got a YZ250. Ended up having that engine built, fell in love, and I’ve been riding YZ250’s ever since.
Sorry to hear you’re not riding street anymore. I once fell in love with a Moto Guzzi, too. A 2010 Griso. Of all the street bikes I’ve owned, that one got the most positive comments from passersby. It was great until I started feeling the need for speed…
I purchased an 2001 CR250R new and was very concerned after riding it a few times. Carburetion was terrible - it ran horribly and fouled plugs at least twice per day. Installed a JD Jetting jet kit and it became an entirely different machine. I eventually replaced the stock Mikuni TMX carb with a Kiehin PWK Airstriker, and it ran even better. In fact, it was probably one of the best running bikes I've ever owned.
New 2008 RMZ 250. Was a fine bike, but I traded it to a kid who had a very built up RM 250 that to this day is one of my favorite bikes. Dailed RG3 suspension, and an eric gorr motor that had power everywhere, and a full hinson setup.
The rmz had one break in ride on it at time of trade.
Im there with my 2025 crf450r. It's just not it for me.
Pit Row
does road bike count too? Just sold my 2025 Kawasaki Z650 few days ago. Bought it new a few months ago, was riding maybe 3 or 4 times. I was going to give a naked bike a try, the handling and feeling of the z650 is really amazing. Now I cant say anything bad about that bike really, but Im coming form supersport (Yamaha R6) and its just lacking power and emotions (cant describe it better sorry) and therefor after 4 rides I said, ok, time for a supersport again. Obviously I knew about the power before, I thought maybe Im getting used to it and dont ride as fast anymore, at least that was my goal. But I had no fun at all unfortunately. It was sold one day after I put it online tho haha

I had an 04 Honda CRF450 that I could never get comfortable on and the engine would always flame out and die. Only had it about a year then went back and got an 06 RM250.
Kinda how I got my 84.
Some newbie wanted the badest dirt bike he could get, and they sold him one. He rode it once and broke his leg.
I got it dirt cheap. It's funny. he put a set of bars for an 80 or something on it, had the cables all routed wrong, and some kind of weird "Preston Petty" type fender on it.
His signifigant other was there when I went to buy it, she seemed like she was still pissed. Dude had no business buying that bike
I’m surprised we’ve only had 2 maybe three 22-24 Honda CRF 250, 450R made mention of.
6 mo, year back or so Houston area Facebook Market place was covered up in late model Honda R’s for cheap. I have’t looked in a while but bet one can still be bought cheap. Not everybody wants to spend good money on a racing scooter then drop 2k or more if you can’t do the work yourself to make one handle. Lots want to buy a racing scooter and just ride it.
2009 Honda CRF 450...sold an '08 to get it.
Rode it 2x and took it back and traded it for a leftover '08.
I have a first year, 2007, first 150RB the dealer received, that's been parked in my basement since... 2007. It was recalled (swingarm replaced by Honda) before I ever ride it. I thought it would make a decent back yard/pit bike/muddy hare scrambles bike (I'm 5'6"). It's very hard to start, and has a bog in the power. I tried a JD jet kit, but it didn't help much. I put it in the basement (has about an hour on it) and put it on my "to fix" list...
This is exactly what I'm afraid of. I'm drawn to knowing and seeing people rack up hours without doing much maintenance to them. But everyone I know also has at min 3k into the suspension. Also the few random ones I see broken. I think I'm going to take one for a spin this weekend.
I agree, that was an awesome bike with the metal tank too... loved that bike
I sometimes loved my '84, and sometimes hated it. I could never get it to run the same way twice. I've never had a more inconsistent running bike. Sometimes it would start easily, sometimes I'd be kicking forever. Sometimes it would rev out with a nice, linear spread of power, sometimes it would act like a light switch.
I've read since then that changing the ignition made all the difference on them, but I sold it to some dude in the UK after having no luck solving its problems.
I bought a Stark EX early this summer, put less than 3 hours on it, and it’s been sitting for the last 2 months. I ride/race every weekend, and have zero interest in loading it up anymore. I’ve owned 2 Altas and loved them, but the Stark not so much.
Not a dirt bike but i did buy a Harley XR1200 only rode it once Big Disappointment was going to do track days hell my 2-stroke KX250 would smoke it & The KX450 would do better on a road course
Thought I would try a 450 again, it’s been a few years. I think I made a mistake.
