The tree at Loretta’s, WTF??

7/30/2025 12:21pm

On a backyard practice track I might expect to have trees that close. If I was riding a GNCC or trail riding I would expect trees to be possible to hit and watch out for them.  But not at any track that has motocross style racing.   Maybe on the inside of a slower corner. But not so close to a jump like that.

I'm not saying to bring MX Sports down over the crash. and I don't think anybody is saying that. But I agree that the track should be moved over so that its not possible to hit the tree while being 8 feet from the edge of the track. Or at least far enough away that a scrub or swap would never result in getting close enough to hit the tree.

Just move the track over, leave the tree and shade. Hell even move the banners over and narrow up that jump so people are not so close to the tree right away. And change it for next year.

3. Go look at the video again, his back end starts to slide out and it shoots him back inside towards the tree.  You can see that exact thing if you watch the moto on Racertv.  It happens on the first lap and he's in 2nd going into that section.

Not saying that it is his fault, just sometimes shit happens.

It's really sucks that it happened, but he was probably crashing bad and going of the track if the tree wasn't  there anyway.  They poured a truck load of saw dust right after the landing and guys have been wadding up on the braking bumps landing from the triple like crazy.  I think that's what he did.

Nope it’s all or nothing, can’t have some common sense and try to make this sport safer. The best we can do is ban videos of people partying after the motos.

Maybe don't try to cut the corner when there is a tree there?...

On his IG he said "Hit that line all day yesterday but the way the track formed had a bigger lip today. I hit the tree, not a branch and was not out of control at all. Unfortunately things happen fast on a dirt bike"

Taking responsibility for himself. Refreshing.

At least the rider takes responsibility. The rest of you guys complaining about the tree on his behalf need to chill out.

I can see his rear go sideways at the very begining of the video.   So if he wasn't crashing anyway how did he get to an object that is off the track?

Whether a tree should be that close to a track is for another discussion.

I was looking forward to watching Canning because he was flying at the Ironman regional.

was watching an old YT vid of RC/JS7 and was struck by how close the fans were to the track. Probably 10' outside the track itself. Awesome for viewing, but egads, how has a bike not catapulted into the audience and killed someone? So back to current day, where's the limit? how far do we go in terms of "safety" while still preserving the ability to enjoyably view the races? Do we have to install Nascar-style wire fences that can stop bikes all the way around the track? Only allow certain areas for public to stand around? Hard discussion I'm sure with few good solutions.....

Reminds me a bit of baseball in some ways. A line drive foul ball could straight up kill you if you're not paying attention. Should MLB enclose the entire stadium in nets, or do we at some point have to say "You're assuming a certain risk in attending this event. You get hurt, your problem"?

I think banning stacyc bikes from the pits will remedy this

I run a fairly large motocross series.  The worst thing that has happened all year is a Stacyc collision with a rider coming off the track.  The child was out cold for several minutes and a very scary situation.   Time and place, and running around the pits of a busy race track isn't the time or place.

So when that happens and the little kid is on a pedal bike, it will be different?

Umm… then we will uhhh… I got it… we’ll ban pedal bikes… and when we hit people walking… we will ban walking….

How is this different than a barrier or a wall in SX.  Don't run into it is the best option right?

I see Slowie doubling down and putting out a sensational video about the crash. That will get you back in the good graces. Hes sticking to his guns. I'll give him that.

Maybe I’m missing something, but I don’t see how he would’ve gone “way off the track” like others are saying, that looks like if you made a relatively tiny mistake you could face massive consequences

Why shouldn't he? The dude is banned for life, if I was him, I'd go scorched earth, then again if I was him, I wouldn't have got banned in the first place.

The rider sounds like a stand up guy, taking responsibility. This doesn't mean everything is fine with the way the track is. Move the damn jump over a bit so this doesn't happen again. If there was a lawsuit and this video was presented as evidence in court, how do you think that would turn out? Unfortunately, you've got to think like a lawyer to prevent having to deal with any.

Thats the biggest thing taking responsibility.  You're also right I would change that section up somehow. I see a lot of lawsuit talk about it. If it was another rider it wouldn't surprise me. I don't think many people commenting lawsuit actually know who Chris is or what he has to do with racing.
