Matthes alluded to how it was about HD rallying his fanbase against his competition, who happened to be Aussies. I don't know how much you've been on social media lately, but HD has a massive, radicalized branch of his fanbase which is completetly unhinged and will go nuclear the moment someone looks at him funny.
A textbook example of this was during the 'claim-gate' saga; Brennan Schofield wasn't a professional athlete, he was an honest kid from Nova Scotia, racing LLs on his own terms and wasn't any threat to HD, yet Brennan had to comb through hundreds of harassment messages for months, because his attempt to claim a motorcycle fair and square, pissed off HD's cultist fans.
Don't think it's about patriotism or nationalism, but more about potential negative fan reactions. Matthes could've worded it better but he has a point when he says the fans can be really shit people sometimes.
