Ban the scoop, too. Can't believe we're still talking about that tire a year later.

Starting blocks were against the rules forever. sometime in the last 15 years they changed the rule. Probably when they went to stupid starting grates

I remember starting with only my right foot on the ground and keeping my left foot on the peg so I was quicker at shifting into 2nd or 3rd gear on tracks that had cement pads (late 90's, early 2000's).  The only time I ever used blocks was when I first jumped to the 80 class at like age 8 or 9 because I could barely touch the ground on my tip toes. Once I grew tall enough I didn't use or want them. Didn't feel like it was any advantage and certainly never "pushed" off using them.

I don't really give a shit about guys using blocks, but what I am in favor of is getting rid of all the other shit. The starting grates, holeshot devices, rev lights on the fender to tell you what RPM to hold it at. Even having special ECU maps just for the start is stupid to me. IMO it takes a lot of the skill out of it. The starts are half the race and practicing them was just as important as time on the track.

I start with my left foot under the shifter & rt foot down .  I,m only 6 1/4 I was 6,3 Chicago mob trucks beat quite a bit of height off of me.  Maybe I should get blocks it would make it much easier.

Edit. This has nothing to do with deggan. I just used his ridiculous blocks as an example.

These fuckin starting blocks are just beyond ridiculous now. There needs to be a revision to the rule for them. No more than 4 inches of height no tilts or angles to push yourself forward. I'm all for them to make things a bit more even for us vertically challenged but with front and rear holeshot devices its not like back in the day when we started with full travel in our suspension.

I say BAN them,I am and have been six foot six since I was a teenager. I was at a major disadvantage to overall weight. Nobody said he's so tall let him ride a 250 in the 125 class.. I got out and moved up after 2 years. But I learned stuff that made me a better rider in bigger cc bikes. The metal start grates are strange to me also. And WHY is every track on the planet sandy??? That's not the native soil to that region, red bud in 81 was a hard packed slippery ice rink. Just my old man rant. Carry on

I'm for banning all this shit... start blocks, starting devices, start maps, grates.... I mean what's next? Will they put sensors on the front wheel that see the gate drop and launch the bike for the riders?

Yeah drop

All that & add pneumatic air rockets attached to each swing . Limited to 2 air rockets per competitors machine.  The air supply tank is strapped to the riders back. Once the competitors machine reaches 110 mph The air tank releases from the riders. A manual releases is also mounted on the handle bars.  A electronic to air button.  That would be awesome air tanks deployed then hits another riders rear wheel . Sending the tank air born to take the line of unsuspecting people lined up for a corn dog out.  I inpart designed a electronic to air clutch on a mud rig for hhg drilling.  It could be controlled 400 ft away in the drill shack or by a man at the transmission . That was in 1990.   Starting blocks etc stuck in a cave era.

Well don’t I feel naive, I’ve always been a dirt dude I had no idea that was a real thing, I was making a joke lol.  learn something every day.

These are great ideas but costly, how about this idea, it seems doable ? Build big towers like they do at surf contests, hoist all the bikes and riders up there, when the gate drops they drop about 100 feet straight down into a nice ramp transition into the dirt, like a hot wheels track. The ultimate downhill start. That’d be fair. Shit a fat guy on a mountain bike could be mid pack 😂😂.

Sorry long day, brains still pinging lol. Carry on

As long as it begins with a Le Mans start I'm okay with them using whatever devices they want

Some of you guys have never raced in a BOP series. You haven’t seen sandbagging until you have to deal with weight and energy rules. The series get much more expensive to race and stupid expensive to get an edge.

I think it is time to change some rules to make it less start and scoop tire dependent. I’m not sure what those changes are or how to implement them but it’s going to get real boring if something isn’t done.

That's exactly what I mean by ALL starting assists. All of it needs to go, whether mechanical, structural, or electronic.

Seems like we all agree on going back to square one and leveling the playing field. Does anyone think any of it will happen? The genie is out of the bottle. All the money and testing from teams and companies manufacturing all these products, you think the AMA is going to ban them?

These are sprinters blocks.  Take away the wedge/ramps so the rider cannot use any forward thrust with their legs.
For sure this is an advantage.

This was my first thought when they were ranting. I'm 6'2 and wear 36" inseam jeans. Could go longer but its hard enough getting a 36. I have a friend who is 6'3" and he's a 32" inseam. Get rid of the blocks all together. Its not like other sports let the athletes use things to help aid them in the height department. Thats part of it having the right build.

Having the right build?  You do realize Tomac, Jett, Webb, etc etc..all use starting blocks.  I guess they don't have the right build for MX?

If we're going to eliminate any body type accommodation mods, good luck on stock springs, bars, pegs and seat height.....  we'll see who has the "right build"..  LOL  😆

I think tomac and jett don't really need these blocks. Someone like webb it could possibly really help. Like one guy said what are we going to do start adding weight to the lighter guys. Just get rid of the blocks.

Calm down, lady, he just used Deegan as an example. Eli uses start blocks, JCoop uses start blocks...hell, Benny Bloss uses them. The OP wasn't picking on your precious Deegan.

Too true.  Jeff is the man.   Just delete them... and start devices too.   Deal with it.  Too easy for current generation, they can't even kick start a bike.

Some of these guys have really short legs. I walked past Deegan in person at Washougal and he's really short, maybe 5'5?

Jasikonis used to start with his feet already on the pegs in the GP's

Yes, "Shorty's" were truly high, considering he's around 6'3" - they got even higher than that - right up to the pegs, I reckon after a while.

Now, with the way they can now be 'keyed' into the grates, it can make them incredibly solid / stable, and, that gives rise to the thought that a rider can push off from them, pretty bloody hard, for an advantage.

And, the ramps on Deegs ones look like that could be part of it.

But, just like front starting devices that have existed for yonks now, people can get these easily.

I've spoken blokes / blokettes that have tried these platforms - some like them, some, have not.

If I were to ever go back to trying to get better results (not happening, I'm happy to just motor around, and try to stay in front of, or get past, a few other riders I'm sharing the track with), I might knock up a set, if only to have my feet set onto the pegs, due to my leg problems.

Cripes,  I may have just persuaded myself to do a pair, as I have Great difficulty in getting my boots set on the pegs, where I need them, off a start.  I'm one of those Battered Old Bastards, whose feet, rarely leaves the pegs, once I 'find' them.......😞

I can , easily, see the advantages they may offer, Especially  if you go the full 'combo': Front Start Device, these Platforms, and, a Rear End Lowering Device. Those, and the various Electrical 'things' available now, could make a  Big difference, in the Drag Race to the 1st turn.

All that said, I've no real problem with them.

Give it a rest with the push off thing its so unrealistic and physically impossible that they are pushing off with them. Lets say they are pushing off of them, how much pushing is going to be done with the pegs an inch behind his feet? Also if he pushes back he will likely unweight the seat and back wheel which is the last thing they want to do.

Is a BUNGEE cord holding them to the grate, if he is pushing back on the blocks they will slide back on the grate.

Well, I'd say he's probably pushing about 1" until his feet hit the pegs.

The bungee cord is also hooked in front of the blocks so it would prevent them from sliding back when he pushes.

Why would they need that angle on them if he wasn't using them for a little leverage?

How would it make sense that he would push backwards with his feet angled forward like that?

Why are you so mad that pretty much everyone thinks they are pushing off of them a little bit?
