I think that for the safety of the riders they should outlaw the scoop for all rounds barring Redbud, Millville and Southwick.  Especially with the trickle into amateurs.  Some c class dude running a scoop on his hard slick local track…not a good look overall.

I've actually seen scoop tires on bikes on practice weekends here at tracks in Texas. Never before have I seen guys running them as weekend warriors. It's a trend that makes you wonder how much development they put into other tires if the money is going to scoops. Seems ridiculous to run them when just putting in laps at a local track?

Not sure I get the fuss? It’s not like they’re twice as much to run em? An MX 14 is $10 more than the same size MX 34 on Rocky Mountain.

Since they work so good, maybe we will eventually see soft, intermediate, and hard scoop tires…standard knobbies will only show up dot approved tires…lol

Right!

What's the advantage when holeshot devices and the scoops are available to all. Start grates too? Cancel them and technique is the advantage on e again.

At least for SX, I’ve heard the scoop tire is a major factor in how fast the track deteriorates.  There’s been a lot of talk about rider safety and track conditions lately.  Maybe the first solution is the tires.  Limit the depth of the tread and you solve half the problems with that.

There are rules in place to limit the depth: https://www.amaproracing.com/assets/view/28756/2025-AMAP-MX-Rulebook-Fi…

2.4.12 TIRES

a. Studded tires, other than rubber, are prohibited.

b. Paddle (continuous radial rib) tires and tires with lugs having a height of more than ¾ inch are prohibited.

Tire heights are maxed out to this rule. Reduce the height and tire manufactures will still find a way to save performance and straight line drive. Make them too low and tires become slick on the terrain causing more issues. Bikes become more advanced and improved with technology, tracks become more advanced and improved with better watering and maintenance, so do tires to match.

I'm nor sure the tire life would be the same, which could add even more than the initial $10.  To me that's negligable in cost, but I so see the manufacturers concentrating more money and effort into the scoop tires going forward if this tire becomes their bread and butter money maker. Which will more than likely lead to less money and effort being spent on improving the soft/intermediate and other knobby tires.

Is the Pirrelli the best yet ?   How do they last on a sand track that has  some hard edges ?

Davey was talking about scoop tires and starts in general on Title 24 with RV. It was brought up that they dont touch up the start straight like they do in Europe. I believe he said they let the straight develop ruts to create some separation between the riders. I mean you could really do that if you took away starting devices and the grates. Lets see who really has the best start technique.

scoop tires are great when you can run a new one every day or every 2 days. I mean one good hard full day at GH & the MX14 tire is about shot. 2 days? Tire is cooked. I would run the scoop all the time if i could but most the time i'm running the mx34 so tough to manage swapping to a mx14 for race day or here & there without having the feeling. I run it at some sandier races.

Anybody know if the 450 pros are all on the 120-90 or are any of them running the 110-90 scoop?

I believe this is all on Tony Cairoli.  When he came over a few years back for KTM, he was pulling holeshots left and right with the scoop and no Americans were running them.

I remember people here laughed when Cairoli showed up with scoop tire in the US 😅 But I think he said he wanted good starts because his fitness wasn`t that great.

Now it`s more common and something they talk about every weekend on TV.

I had an idea of a hybrid tyre every other row is a scoop layout and every other row is normal knobbys,

Would either be a great tyre or a terrible one, someone should prototype and test

Has anyone considered NOT ripping the start straights so the scoop is not so much of an advantage. Or the rest of the damn track for that matter.

One of the beauties of the Nationals used to be the varying terrain that each track provided.  Saddleback/Carlsbad was blue groove.  Gatorback had both sand and hard areas.  Unadilla had grass🥲.  Binghampton had rocks. Now the dirt is as close to the same from location to location (with the exception of Southwick) as they can make it.  Every track doesn't need "X load of sand added" every week.

Right. Had the same exact thought. Um..... maybe don't rip the start to China??

Not that it would be fair or reasonable but points chase would be much more interesting if they randomized the starting positions like they do to us  🙂

I found it interesting listening to Davey on Title 24 with RV. They give them starting grates, let them use scoop tires, starting devices, ecu maps but then they leave the ruts in front of the gates? It doesn't make any damned sense to me. If you are going to allow all that other stuff you might as well groom in front of the gates imho. Personally, I think the grates, starting devices and scoop tires should not be allowed.

The truth of it at Hangtown is there was simply not enough time to fix the ruts in front of the gate. We are pushed down to the minimums with track maintenance. With live tv it is very limited time. They actually wanted us to fix them at one point. Pushing the equipment that hard in the heat we were having issues with hydraulics over heating when pushing really hard against time.
I have worked the start line at Hangtown since 1990. Every year.
All these things are available to every rider. Scoop tires. Starting devices. The grates. Every rider has them all or a choice to them all.   Eliminate them all and were in the same place. All equal.
One thing I do like about the grates is way less race day work behind the gate for me. So all for the grates!

If we dont rip it? Dust bowl. Especially at Hangtown.

I personally like how MXGP races on freshly prepped tracks and the riders have to adjust to the surface conditions every lap. Ya, rough tracks separate the great from the good. But having 2-3 guys a minute ahead of the pack is boring.

I'd be ok with a limit on a start device depth,  get rid of the grates though.  Fully prep the starts like GP's do.

They could make scoop tires available for certain tracks only.
