A few years ago,..as I recall…he went back to Scotland…

When he came back, his accent came back with him.🤣

No, I’m not kidding and I’m kinda glad to hear him sounding like a Scot…again.

Years ago then we were all up in Canada at a race in Calgary, Matt Goerke told me and Dean that we sounded like a coupl’a dudes form California…it was funny. But, looking back on that now? It’s even funnier.

DeanO, Kenny and Chad are 3 racers that I’ve noticed their accents kinda come and go when they travel back home. I think it’s pretty cool. I’m also kinda stoked for the guys that come here and get an opportunity to speak their native tongue with friends and competitors…like seeing Tom speaking French with David and Marvin. That’s gotta be nice when they’re far from home and missing it.

I remember first year he was at Walton racing and had zero accent so it’s funny to see it come and go.

Some of you will say "Yeah, no sh*t, dude", but aside from the top 5 or so guys, I never think of these athletes making a ton of money... and certainly not what they deserve given the risks involved. However, I was pleasantly surprised to hear that at least some make more than I expected when listening to the latest Dean Wilson episode on Gypsy.

Around 55:35 (on Spotify), he said that he was fortunate to have his mom keep him pretty disciplined with his money starting at an early age. He said that since around 2010, he's been putting around $13,000 a month into an account. Assuming that it's some sort of IRA or 401K yielding an average of 8% interest for the last 15 years, that's almost $4.55 million in one account. That's on top of his investment properties and other assets that I presume he has. No bad for a dude that's only 33 years old, albeit he risked his life and body to get it.

He absolutely wasn't trying to brag about any of it, and I wish more riders were more open to talking about. I think it could actually improve negotiating leverage for a lot of riders if there was a better understanding of who is getting paid what, but that's maybe a conversation for another thread.

I know Vital is 50/50 on Gypsy, but it's a great interview and worth listening. I mean, how can you not like DW15?

So according to math, since he has been 18 he has had $156,000 dollars a year extra to invest after taxes, agents, injuries, training, every year? What is that 250k after taxes?  Maybe, math is hard but even a cool million a year contract doesn't go far when you factor in two coast living, trainers, girlfriends, health insurance, agents, lawyers, practice mechanics, dad's "help", sprinter vans, and hangers on. I call bravo sierra, he probably invested that much some years... but not every year. He's done OK, I hope, but not to that extant. Otherwise why is he racing still with his alledged crippled unwalkable knees. It's one or the other maybe, but not likely, did he make it rich, or is he still struggling to keep going to earn a living in athletics with crippling injuries?  What or why was a former AMA champ racing British arenacross this year with shitty knees if he is so wealthy? Is it somewhere between, I hope for him.

£250k ($330k) prize purse for 7 rounds, including £25k just for last round win in Abu Dhabi in July.

Aussies don't ever seem to lose their accent or ending every sentence with 'mate'.  Your illustration of how Canadians pronounce the word process was awesome..  LOL.  Right up there with the Candian 'aboot'.

Yes, except for Chad 'um' Read. He got an American accent the first day he showed up in the States.

The prize money for that was what Dean the business made, not Dean the person. Dean has plenty of expenses in order to make that money. An agent would take 10% of that off the top. How about tax implications? Does that money get taxed in Abu Dhabi or wherever his home is? His accountants cyphering that are not free either. Here 330K gross would be closer to 165K after taxes, and agents, lawyers, trainers, mechanics, get paid based on grosses not after taxes. Like I said maybe some years he made good money, but no way every year, after expenses.

I'm glad to see he had a nice career financially. I was heartbroken when he got up at Seattle 2012 holding his shoulder. I always wondered how the Jeff Ward Racing deal would've gone if that team didn't fold. How much factory support was he going to get?

I got to know Dean just a bit many years ago when he was just a little Grom ripping around Perris Raceway on his Team Green KX85.  I haven’t seen him in over a decade.  I ran into him at a local track last year when he was giving lessons and went over to say hi.  I was shocked that he remembered my name and we had a fun little conversation about to good old days.  He is a great ambassador for whatever products he is promoting and I wish him nothing but the best in his future.

This.  I reminded everyone about how he left everyone out to dry at Jeff Ward Racing when everyone was gushing over him here a few years ago.

£250k ($330k) is total purse for the series, not how much DW can make. For British rounds it was £16k per night + £4k on team bonuses + £8k overall championship bonus fund. Then Arenacross covers all expenses for Abu Dhabi (freight, flights, accomodations) and prize money is increased: overall prize pot for the final night is £31k + extra £45k for overall championship bonuses + £15k for the teams.

Prize money is a big draw to get someone like Deano race in the UK.

OTOH he's also a contracted rider with Armor Vision Honda, so on top of his prize money he probably has base salary, bonuses, and travel expenses and mechanic paid by the team for the Brit rounds. Plus his personal sponsors.

I’m glad that it sounds like he had a good foundation for understanding that a riding career doesn’t pay large salaries into your 40s, 50s, and 60s!

I’m also glad that he has saved enough so that he can do things like giving mini bikes to kids!  No matter his on track results, that made me root for him just a bit more than I did before.

I’ve lived in San Diego 30 years and still sound like I just arrived yesterday.

But.

Answer me this genuine question. Why do 99% of people here ask me if I’m from Australia when they here me speak??  It got so bad my chick had a t shirt made for me that says “ I’m not Australian “ on it .

I dunno man I live in Canada but grew up in Aus, I get asked where in NZ, England and Aus I am from. For some reason most people think im Kiwi. My accent is no where near as strong as it once was, when I go back for a holiday my wife gives me shit because I come back with a much stronger accent!

The UK ax series is huge similar to here in the late 90,s.  Good money all things considered.  The biggest vet series pays 00.00 for expert classes.  The expert vets where told payout is upto the track.  Operation cost etc was the reason .  I,m usually in the ne the last co not quite as much.  But I lost majority of my ne accent.  My mom is from Holland moved here at 5 yrs old . She didn’t know a word of English. She has no accent.  This area is clear English tho Tom Brokhow had a Tx. Hillbilly accent they sent him to Wi. & Iowa to clean it up.

Holy shit it’s a little warmer than I imagined coming from Scottsdale. Tomorrows getting warmer, tracks going to be hard to keep dust down.

I still have some accent from the place I grew up and left 35 years ago.  What was my cutoff limit when I was supposed to have it fully removed?

I find accents fascinating. I worked for a contractor from down South who moved to New England 40yrs ago and never lost a lick of his accent. Meanwhile a girl I know moved down South and within 6 months starting picking up the accent. What makes some never lose it yet others pick it up?  So Deano is a fake Scottsman and AP is a fake cowboy? Tough crowd around here
