Keep in mind Hangtown is basically a dirt pit, so if the weather is forecast for 100 degrees in Rancho it’s going to be at least 110 to 115 down on the start line.  Amateur day is gonna be rough this year 😬

Amateur day was yesterday

Wow I definitely win dumb ass of the year award, I had no idea they changed it to the weekend before why would they do that?  That’s super lame, guess I screwed myself by not checking.

Nah… all good my friend.

Only reason I knew that is a buddy took his kid up there to race or I would’ve never known either

Yeah, No Beano. He won’t be making the trip out West. Tried to get him to Pala last weekend but he didn’t show.  Do you know him? Pretty sure I know the answer.

So back on track.  100F at Hangtown, No Beuno!

Amateur day was held a week early Saturday 24th   Fun but the track didn’t hold the water. Dusty, hardpack and slick in some places and it was 70 degrees. They did a great job last year but it was much cooler. Gonna be a challenge with the hard pack and heat. I hope they bring in rice hulls to try to keep the water in the ground and not be too slick when watered.

I'll bet they rip deeper for the pros. That will help hold some water but yeah, will probably still be dry and hard.

Sorry bruh.  If you’re trying to say “not good” in informal Spanish, the “u” comes before the “e”.  The way you spelled it is no bueno.

Definitely nowhere near as bad as some Florida humidity, I thought Hangtown was bad on some of those hundred degree days during all those years watching the nationals as well as racing amateur races there, but until I experienced humidity in Orlando Florida and Texas, my word lol I don’t know how people can live in those places where you can’t even breathe, I guess you just get used to it.

You don't get used to it, you deal with it

Another reason Texas should hold a national for the 1st round. The last 3 nationals Washougal, Hangtown and So Cal.

You move Hangtown and Pala to August and you can guarantee it’s going to be hot. With them in May sometimes you get cool weather. Not as much now that the series starts later.

They always say Hangtown will either be triple-digits or rain. Missed it by just a couple days.

Birmingham, AL (Barber Motorsports Park) is forecast to be 83 deg. The excuse of heat to not have a race in the SE seems a bit weak.

2001 was brutal, just wicked.  I don't think it has been that bad since then.  Doesn't help to have moved it from mid-May.

Expect track prep to be very different fro, amateur day.

We used to live 20 min from Hangtown and raced it a lot. I tapped out in 105f there. Even prepping for it with good diet and hydration for a week ahead, I couldn't do the second moto that day. I knew after moto 1 that I was done. I've ridden my street bike there in 109f and it was like riding in an oven - just brutal and dangerous as well.

We were thinking about heading down for the weekend but not with those temps. Now I'm acclimated to Oregon, and anything over 80 is too damn hot. If you are spectating, there is no shade, and the bowl holds the heat. Sunscreen, wet towel, an umbrella and as much water as you can carry would be my plan. Avoid caffeine and alcohol. Hell, just stay home and watch from the couch. That's what I'm doing.

First Hangtown was 1974 at the Plymouth sand track.  Freezing cold overnight in the back of a beater Ford pickup, praying for the sun to come up.  Last Hangtown was 2021 when I could feel heat stroke coming on before the 1st 450 moto.  We bee-lined for the truck to get out of there.  The jailbait 52-year-old Girlfriend wants to go this year, but she hated the heat in 2021 and just forgot.  I looked into bougie tickets but they were around $450 each, so close to $1000 and it would still be hot and miserable.  Time to admit to the limitations of aging.  Going out to ride the 300 XCW today though!

1988 it was so windy they didn't even try to put water on the track. Had to wear goggles to spectate to keep the dirt out; never seen something like that since. If social media had existed back then it would have been bad.

As a guy just watching on tv, I really liked Freestone. Rough and hot, man's track. I know everyone said it wasn't a good track for spectator's. They say that about Pala, too. Southwick isnt anything soecial as far as spectating goes either.

I swear, "spring" in NorCal last 2-3 weeks. You go from needing a heater to living in a frying pan in the same month.

Freestone wasnt a National caliber track IMO..... Have attended in person to the national, have ridden/raced it as a squid on amateur day. Viewing at the wick is pretty piss poor in person sans a few areas but i'd venture to say its better than Freestone, and it isnt a bajillion degrees and humid. Last Freestone national I attended was brutal!

That was the blessing of having Hangtown run in early April back in the day.  The realignment of the SX and MX schedules pushed it to the worst time of the year for heat and dried out hillsides.

Might want to change that pronunciation to "faddah".

That "hard R" on the end might offend some. 😄

Apple weather is always a bit extreme, just like they were with Pala last week.   Of all the weather apps I find Accuweather to be the most accurate and they are forecasting 100 at the moment.

Haven't they started shortening the motos in recent years due to heat?  If yes, what is the temp threshold and how much will they shorten the motos?

5/27/2025 2:20pm

We go every year, every year I say that it's too damn hot to drag two little kids around the track all day with no shade and we won't go back next year.

Anyway, we will be there Thursday.  Again. And these weather reports are pissing me off.
