You could build a bike that looks brand new and put it in the crate for a lot less money  han that. It wouldn't even need all the internal parts of the engine and transmission because it newer gets started...

Just look at it as a piece of art. People buy art for what others consider ridiculous prices but to the buyer, its a passion and they love it. They don't buy a masterpiece to then paint over the top of it and change it. They just like looking at it. Exactly like what will happen with this CR. In a few years, the owner may sell and I will guarantee they will make all their money back plus interest.

I'm afraid that the younger generations who have never seen CR500 ridden in anger aren't giving it that much of a value. To them it  will be as exciting as some dusty old horse carriage in the corner of a museum

It's an extremely rare and unreplaceable item. That makes it valuable. It's not hard to see what is happening here. At this level it is ONLY an investment... and a great one at that. Its a REAL THING sitting in your garage/basement/bedroom and not a number on a screen in someone else's ticker portfolio.

When someone buys this for $100k and then in 5 years sells it for $250k... people will be like "Wait What? I would have paid $100k to make +150k in 5 years".

Also the same people in here groaning about the high price have 100's of thousands of dollars invested in 401k companies that they have never met or will ever know personally. At least with this kind of investment you know the industry and its pros and cons inside and out. Hell most people in here could build one of these blindfolded....but instead of investing in something like this, they shit on the idea and just give money to banks that hate them. I dont get it.

If you compare it to gold it’s done 200% better! That’s with gold at an all time high.

Let’s say we both were/are. What would you do with it? Honest question.

We are likely both in the same boat as far as affording this bike.  IF I wanted it badly enough to buy it, it would never see dirt (or probably even direct sunlight!)  It's akin to a  museum piece or a piece of artwork. You buy it to admire it , or as an investment that appreciates in value - hopefully both! (for the record - I own a 2001 CR500 that has less than 4 hours on it. Near mint condition. I rode it once after I got it from the original owner. When I got it in about 2005 I paid $2800 for it. ;-)    I also have a 1997  and (2) 1987 CR500s that I occasionally ride and do vintage races with.  Fun bikes!

This only has value to older people who have an attachment to 500's. Once they all die out I predict the value of this to fall off a cliff, so it'd definitely be a short term only investment.

I can honestly tell you as a proud owner of one I have no desire to ever part ways with it. The beast will still in the family for generations.

I had an uncle who was into WWII, bought all kinds of military stuff. It was going to be in his family for multiple generations... His kids sold it all to pay for the retirement home.

I met him at Barber at the vintage auction, and he was buying A LOT of bikes. But was cool enough to notice that I wanted some junk too and didn't bid me up. He's OK in my book!

Exactly! Younger generation have no emotional attachment for CR500. To them it's just a pile of steel, aluminum, plastic and rubber and nothing more. It's totally delusional to think that the value of the bike will be increasing indefinitely. Also the bike will be slowly decaying even it won't be ridden. I bet already the brakes are stuck and crank seals are gone

Sheesh I restore my great friend Don's (RIP) 2001 CR500 that sat on the side of his shed for $7500.

Guess I should have kept her a bit longer! 🤯

Sorta like 2t street bikes, once us old timers die off that market will crash. The 3 and 4 cylinder Kawasakis, Suzukis and Yamahas might hold their prices but I think the standard RD’s will probably be a dime a dozen.

"A fool and his money are soon parted"  The rich spend too much on CR500s for their private museums, the poor buy graphics kits and monster stickers.

What I struggle to understand is, why wouldn’t Honda see this going on, and realise there is a (small) market for these bikes,

Honda.

Small market = Not worth the time or effort.

The dirt bike collector market is a " niche" at best. The number of people that have that kind of money to burn and want to spend it on a dirt bike is very small. They aren't 71 Hemi Cudas for God's sake.

I just sold my '97 CR500. You know what, my CRF450 is the better bike. Way more power and traction. The 500 made maybe a little more power at a very narrow peak in the rev range, but, unless you could get traction, would just spin and was unpredictable. It was fun though when it came on. Kind of a novelty to ride it. Clean ones sell for $10k and a lot of the parts are still available from Honda. AJ Waggoner makes billet cases and some other parts for them as well. No reason to spend more than $10k for one. Ever.

I see used ones on marketplace all the time mostly at crazy numbers(20k) . Though nice, 6 months later they are still there. I had an 86 and early this year and 86 popped up for $7500 locally that the old man tore down, rebuilt/replaced every, nut, bolt, gasket, seal, gear, you name it with all receipts. I almost bought it but for 2k more I got a 25 TC300 HUSKI. It's better in every way than that CR and very close in power. The nostalgia  has worn off. Bike sold for $6500.

Apparently the $81K new CR500 was stolen by the auction winner when he came to pick it up?  Seems this $81K one was in AUS and is not the Kaplan one listed earlier in this thread?
