Because it just was.

It’s fuel injection. The EX is carbureted.

Would you like a certificate or a medal?

Marty Moates raced in Oz for quite a few years, he was much loved here. https://amxhistory.com.au/motocross-legend-moates

I was at the first and second Superbowl of Motocross. 1972 and 73 Marty Tripes won both races on two brands

Was there too.

My friends and I were there setup by the fence in front of the ledge. I still remember us talking during practice about who had a chance to win that day. Not one of us would have thought Moates would have been top ten. To see him ride near perfect for 90 minutes was shocking. One of the greatest moments in my spectating experiences for 50+ years

Surfing was one of my main sports from 10 to 25. When I could swim to the end of the pier and back my dad let me get a board. Some of my most memorable days were down in your neck of the woods at Trestles. I wasn’t the best in the lineup, but I was one of the best at getting out. 20 foot faces and nobody to talk to out there 😆. Once I got my first Ski boat , sitting and waiting for waves, and the slow speed associated with many of those waves made it less...

Polarizing, much like candy corn. I dispise them.

I barely missed that era. I started subscribing to MXA in about '84 and only learned about the USA's motocross supremacy from a fait accompli point of view. As far as I knew, the Americans had always been the best! (*Here's a Grammar with Falcon interjection: I'm using past-perfect tense above. See how "had always been" is different from "always were?" There's a specificity to the time frame when you are looking at 1980 through the lens of 1984. It is different than if you are looking at 1980 via 2026.) Although I did not see the MXGP in Carlsbad...

Fly high, Viper. Fly high

Snowmobiles, rode them from 1982- 2014. Raced speed runs, ice drags, grass drags and snocross. All at a high level (pro). Quit racing in 2010 to do more things with my family and kids. Kept sleds for a few years hoping they would ride with me. After a few years sold all my sleds. In 2020 I got one of my old race sleds back. I thought it would be cool to restore it. Still sitting in a shed untouched. I watch snowmobile racing on tv but I have never attended a race since I quit racing even though I...

I was there viewing in the grandstand at the first turn of the start! Marty was on fire. Unbelievable day. Rest easy Marty. American hero.

I was there! Amazing race, I remember Mike Bell had a bad day, heat stroke maybe, but went home and later that night he went on like a 20 mile bike ride! These guys were animals! RIP Mike as well!

In 1980 I was 10 yrs. old and watched the USGP from Carlsbad on Wide World of Sports and it plotted the course of my life from there on. Marty Moates was the luckiest man in the world. For the first time in my life I felt the feeling of National pride.
