I Think Reed has mentioned in the past that the 12 model was his favorite race bike. Ben Townley has also mentioned that the 12 model was his favorite race bike as well. Keefer has said the 12 model is a good solid bike.
Can't remember exactly, maybe in an interview, but Reed mentions that the 15 or 16+ KTM 450 models felt like the 12 CRF450r model. His reaction was that he suspected that it was copied. Looked for the interview but couldn't find it.

Hey Joe. I think I remember those builds you posted quite a few yrs. back on TT. Most members didn't understand since they had the CR case reed engines. I'm a big fan as I don't think they take much to run better than the traditional CR cyl / reed induction fed engine.
I thought Reed was more vocal about his '11 bikes? He was killing it outdoors too that year.
My '06 450 - it still sports the original tires, grips, bars, etc.
And no, it's not carbureted, but it's the last generation of the 250R Unicam engines; my '14 250 ~

Possibly? I thought the 11 model was a PC bike with very little factory support. It wasn't till 12 that he got the factory support & was claiming what a big difference the HRC clamps made on the handling?

Almost positive he started getting factory parts half way through SX. He said the biggest difference (must have) was the transmission IIRC.
Still though, maybe it was '12. Those were fun (and devastating) years to be a Reed fan.
And what is Keefer's verdict?

I'm really excited for this video. I never actually owned that gen of Honda but 1 of my best friends had an 08 that I rode all of the time and I just loved it. 1 of my favorite bikes, to this day. I actually really liked the 09-12 450 also, which I am probably in the minority. And I haven't really been a Honda fan since then. Didn't like anything from '13 on. Kind of odd. Now, the '25, that bike I would like to try. It sounds like the chassis I would gel better with, than some of the other recent red bikes. Either way, it would be really cool to ride those both back to back. The video should be really good. I'm happy he actually has a fresh 07 too.

Wow, I had a 05 CRF and a 11 RMZ. I agree on both counts. I loved them both also. Although I never had to do anything to the Suzuki the three years a had it. The Honda would need the valves adjusted every so often.
That era of CRFs were notorious for collapsing valve seats esp on the intake side. Once they got hot they'd never start since the valves wouldn't close. Almost everyone had to have Kibble White valves and new seats done. That and the bog were the 2 main issues I dealt with. The RMZ never needed anything but clutch plates and normal wear stuff.

Was lucky to park close enough to get a sense of rider reactions today at GH for this epic test - Nearly everyone that got off the track after riding the 2007 had a big arse grin on their face! Appeared to start first kick for the round-robin of testers, sounded great in the pits, and was even cleaner in person than photos do it justice. The MX3S front tire and 110/90-19 MX34 rear were definitely updates over current MX33 tires (120/80-19 rear) on modern CRF’s, but seemed to be a good comparison nonetheless. Patiently waiting for the official verdict!
PS: If you have an 05’-08’ CRF450R for sale and it’s not currently moving, this test alone may increase your selling power…

I regret selling my 07 250 and picking up a 250 2T. The CRF was vet owned with a lot of goodies. I barely put any hours on it. Just needed to get the suspension resprung for my weight.
My first big-bore was a brand new ‘06 CRF250R, four bikes later and I now have a ‘23 CRF250R, and I often think about how much faster and more confident I was on the ‘06. Sure, I was 16 or so at the time so that probably plays into the speed aspect, but I remember it feeling so much lighter and flickable than the ‘23 I have now. Felt like I could put it anywhere, where now I feel like I have to be more deliberate with corner entry.
'12 was when he came out absolutely flying in sx. He was on the podium 5 out of 7 rounds until he had that nasty getoff dicing with RV. That was the last year i really felt lIke he was going to win the title
They are such great bikes!
