You can. I have one. 2018 F150 Lariat HDPP package, 3.5l TT, 10 speed. 2406 lbs of payload, 11,500 towing capacity. I have 110,000 on mine, not trouble free. VCTs are an issue, and I just had the CDF clutch housing replaced under a TSB. With any new vehicle, shop around and get the 120k mile (or even 150k) extended warranty. My 120K mile warranty cost $2200 and it was worth every dime.
I do like my 150. I've got over 35000 tow miles on it with a 3500lb moto trailer and a 9500lb toy hauler. It handles both with ease and is a great road trip vehicle - quiet, powerful, lots of room, has a WIFI hotspot built in. No Tundra, Chevy or Dodge 1/2 ton can tow or carry what I do, safety and under all rated limits, period. Payload and RAWR (4800 on the HDPP) is what matters and no one else makes a 1/2 ton that can match the HDPP. I did a crapload of research before ordering mine and I looked at every truck out there at that time including 3/4 tons. If you are just throwing a bike or 2 in the bed, no worries with almost any PU, but if you work it hard like I do, you need the right tool.
Edit - fuel mileage. 16 around town, 22 on the HWY unloaded, 9-12 towing heavy. There is no free lunch. If you are worried about fuel mileage, get a Prius and don't tow anything.
I've got a 2018 F 150 4x4. Its a V6 with no turbo (3.5 liter ?). I got it because I live in the city and commute 45 mins. My heavier 5.3 liter GMC was burning through brakes and tires with the stop and go.
On the weekends I either have 2 bikes in the back headed for a practice day or Im pulling a 16 foot 3500 pound toy hauler thats fully loaded for the weekend. I get 9mpg pulling the trailer, but it makes up for it in the daily commute. 125k miles with no issues. I dont love the driving characteristics of the V6. It either bogs when I want more throttle or it drops down 4 gears and screams like a banshee. But overall the truck has been exactly what I hoped itd be. Ive got 4x4 to drive straight through the mud while pulling a trailer with the whole family in the cab; or I can clean it up and take the wife to a concert in it. Either one doesnt look out of place.
I bought it for $30k with 70k miles on it. I do wonder if the turbo V6 would ne better though.
Idk about anything about trucks except when I see one I like I go siiick!
My mechanic who’s worked on my cars for years told me if I get a ford, take it somewhere else, he hates working on them and refuses it. Always sending my articles on how unreliable they are compared to chevys and Toyotas.
Thats all I got 🤙
I can relate to all three of those...
I love a Toyota. I had a 2013 Tundra Crew Cab with the 5.7 iForce that I sold a few years ago. That was an awesome truck and I kinda regret selling it. I also have a 2003 'Beater' Tundra that I have had for years and is the same gen as your 06 (4.7 V8, rear cab suicide doors and 166k miles). It's dirty, nicely dinged here and there, and stays at the cabin. Used to haul kayaks, our dual sports, and an 18.5 bass tracker with ease. It's worth way more to me than what the book says it would be worth for trade or resale. I recently did a timing belt/tensioner/water pump on it and I would not be sacred to jump in it and drive it out of state. Other than the rubber timing belt, that 4.7 is bullet proof and quite stout for that small truck.
That being said...I also have a 2022 F-150 that is my agency-provided work truck (Crew Cab, 5.0 V8). These F-150's were state contract bid vehicles purchased through GSA sight-unseen, but I have to admit, the new 150's are pretty nice! Very comfortable, roomy, huge touchscreen, and being heavily into music (40-year drummer), the B&O sound system is absolutely incredible. I don't run an MDT or equipment rack like my road officers do, but with a push of a button the center shifter folds down into the console and the arm rest opens up into almost a 3-foot flat workspace. Another really cool feature is having 115volt AC outlets inside and out including a coupler in the bed. I never realized how handy that would be in the field. I would offer this thought tho... consider safety. that aluminum bodied F150 won't take near the hit my full sized Tundra would have. That full size Tundra was so over-built it was ridiculous.

the F-150 is a pretty great truck and the gas mileage is better than a tacoma. 2.7 liter twin turbo is so fast it's mind blowing. the F150's are on 2nd generation 10r80 auto transmissions and I think they have the bugs worked out. I have driven an F150 since 2018 after being die hard toyota guy for the previous 20 years and have zero regrets
I daily a 2019 5.0 F150 and she's been rock solid. Tires and brakes replaced, and that's it.
My 2500 sucks towing my all aluminum 7x14. So bad I'm just selling the damn trailer....
Tacoma is always the right answer...
Used to be a lifelong Chevy owner.
Never again. Junk.
Have family members who own newer Chevy trucks/SUVs....$8K to rebuild the trans at 100K miles.
I would not buy ANY so-called "American" vehicle.
Same here. My last 3 trucks were silverados before I bought my first tacoma in 2020.
My 2020 silverado was such a turd that I had to hire an attorney to and lemon law it. I'll never buy one again.
Just picked up a 21 Tundra in January after 17 years and 200k mi on my last Tacoma.
I also have a 22 F-150 company truck and I really like it. The features and drivability are great, mpg is good considering, but the reliability hasn't been. Over a dozen recalls, the sketchiest being when the bolt holding hub to rear axle sheared off.
When replacing my old trusty tacoma a couple months ago, I decided against turbos, 10 speeds, and unnecessary tech and went with the 2.5 gen Tundra. The legendary reliability and excellent re-sale value end up giving you low(er) overall cost of ownership and more uptime. I was worried about MPG, but it gets the exact same mileage as my old tacoma did.
F150 vote from me. Ive had a few but im really liking my current one which is a supercrew 6.5' bed with the 3.5 and max tow. I had a 5.0 3.73 5.5' bed platinum and loved it but really wanted the 6.5' bed and towing mirrors (highly recommend even if you hate the looks, unparalleled visibility is my main reason and towing second). Mines just an XLT 302a package, so cloth seats with every other available option. When i do it again, itll definitely be a lariat or higher in the same wheel base and cab configuration. The 3.5 is a monster tow motor for a half ton too. Its like a diesel dragging my toy hauler. Low rpms at cruising speed vs the high rpm i was used to in my 5.0. If i didnt care about bed length, id even consider a 2.7. Good mpg, fast, and relatively cheap for what you get. Im sold on the 6.5' bed though and couldn't give it up now. Gearing is important too. 3.55 or 3.73. i wouldn't consider a 3.31 truck.
I wouldn't even consider a tacoma because its so cramped inside. My wife's best friend has one and its not comfortable. Couldnt imagine riding out of it.
Tundras are nice, but to me, still outdated. Admittedly, i have not been in the newest gen tho. Buddy has one and is complaining about the short bed tho.
But it looks good and they're very reliable. I used to pull a 6x12 all aluminum enclosed trailer. It was all my Tacoma wanted and it shifted a lot. My previous truck was a loaded out 2020 Silverado LTZ Z71. Probably my favorite truck. But I needed to downsize so I got the Tacoma.
I'm thinking about a new truck. The new Tacoma is totally redesigned and they improved the majority of it's shortcomings. But they're pricey. I'm also considering a 2024 Colorado Z71, they get very good reviews. I had a 2017 Colorado Z71 and it was a great truck. I sold it with 95k miles on it and it still looked and drove like new.
It all depends on what's most important to you.
Loving my 2023 F150 Tremor. It hauls serious ass, pulls my RV like its not there, gets good mileage on eco. Tremor upgrade looks great and 4x4 system is next level.
The Tacoma has gotta be one of the most overrated vehicles of all time. Yes I've owned one. Yes I'm aware they have good resale value. Still overrated.
As an owner I would agree. Very good trucks, but as I said in my previous post, not very refined in a number of areas.
Most Tacoma owners know what they're getting and just live with it. I'm goimg to check out the new model.
Given the three choices, 2024 Tacoma, I've never understood the appeal of f150's, but I'm definitely in the minority with that opinion lol
The new Tundra looks amazing (with a level and ATs) But I have heard to steer clear for a couple years till they get all the bugs figured out.
To be honest all new trucks are just kind of junk. It seems you either get one that is sound and lasts or you get a lemon. And it seems lemons are more prevalent.
I like the new GMC canyons a lot. In my opinion they look way better than the new Tacomas and have a much better interior. Plus the little 2.7 duramax is a pretty kick ass little motor. They make tons of Torque.
Pit Row
I have a '19 F150 crew with 3.5 EB and 6.5 bed. Super comfy, fast, quiet, gets great mileage. Best vehicle I have ever owned! I live around the corner from you (I've bought parts from you a few years ago) and you are welcome to drive it around for a while if you wish. If you have the room on the driveway, get the crew/4dr...It is SO worth it!
Eric
The new Tacoma looks like it’s designed by a 15 year old
That mpg is terrible but that’s about what they get. I asked Chevy, ford , dodge guy they say 14-15 in town. My pal,s new sales job they gave him a civic. He said used prices r way down. He’s 6,3 the civic has head room the Tacoma pu doesn’t. I told him wait 3 months the prices might come down more. Since gas went up a bunch. My 95 g20 Chevy van gets 15 mpg in town , 20-22 on hwy. 87-95 tbi 350 5.7 way better engine. I would look 4 a 92-95 Silverado ext cad, way sharper & better built, you can actually work on them a lot of room.
Changing my vote. The new Tacomas are now turbo too. You're crazy to buy anything with a turbo and keep it once they go out of warranty. Doesn't matter who makes em.
My money is stick with what you got or upgrade to a newer pre-owned pre-turbo Toyota.
Ford trucks . and twice in Tuesday.... We've had a few, and never disappointed... our present F150 has 332,000 Miles in it and original sans radiator, alt, one steering hose.. even the auto trans is original... you as a consumer and assumedly a citizen.. why cut a check to the same country that required Ford assembly plants to re-tool and build B-29s... and other equipment TO defend our lives in the USA from same country... I honestly can't fathom buying a product, a huge cash drop, that a domestic company makes a great example of, from an Asian company... Bad enough nIce had to buy Hondas.... as stated .. what's the domestic choice in bikes? And "assembled in Tennessee" is no answer... its a con job to avoid terrifs...
I have a 2000 1st gen Tundra work truck (just turned 360K miles) and a 2017 TRD offroad Tacoma. The TRD is great offroad, for driving on the freeway and hauling bikes ? meeehhhh.... the Tundra shines there. The Tundra plenty of power, shifts perfect, gets about the same mileage as the Tacoma (shitty). I don't know how many miles your 2006 Tundra has but I'm driving this one until it completely falls to pieces. Best truck I've ever owned. I get wanting a new truck, but not sure a newer yota is going to be any better than what you have ? The new Tundras are huge and ugly (imo), and the new Tacoma's (my 17 anyway) does a lot of gear searching and seems confused on what gear to be in, it will also downshift in sport/manual mode which seems odd.
I love these "buy American" vehicle arguments....
There are no more American car manufacturers. It's a global economy....parts are sourced globally and generally the lowest bidder.
Let's not even get into the UAW and bailouts bullshit.
Holding a grudge against Japan for a war 80+ years ago is beyond ridiculous. That's like blaming todays white folks for slavery.
To discuss this any further, we'll need to move it non-moto.
The German and Japanese vehicles we own now are/have been the best cars we've ever owned. Hands down.
Lots of options out there in the truck world. I like keeping it simple no turbo vehicles. The turbo will need to be replaced at some point. Oil leaks will need to be fixed due to blow by from the engine being under constant boost.
My buddy has a 2021 Tacoma TRD PRO It’s nice but we haul snowmobile trailers in the winter. It struggles and gets worse gas mileage than my 5.3 Silverado and I’m towing a bigger trailer.
This is the last year for the Hemi in the Ram. Unfortunately it comes with E-Torque which is their version of a hybrid. My brother in law just purchased one it drives nice but E-Torque is just something more to break.
Chevy and GMC offer the 5.3 and the even better 6.2 which are very good engines. I test drove the new 2.7 and didn’t like it at all. I have great experiences with my GM vehicles and love my ‘23 Silverado.
My buddy with the Tacoma has a Silverado on order after he drove with me on a snowmobile trip. I will say the dealer is giving him very good money for his trade in.
Nice outback! I just sold mine last year and was surprised to see an identical new one is 50k. My 2500 sucked the gas towing it though.
Why the hell wouldn’t you support the UAW’s? You say that like you’re proud. With the climate in this country these days, I would be embarrassed to diss an American staple. I guess you’re one of those people that think Romney was right in wanting to kick that industry to the curb. Go Japan!
Still ain’t no ford fuckin ranger
But the newer 5.3 and 6.2 gm motors aren't that great. They have a TON of lifter failures. I had to lemon law my 2020 because of it.
