Bit of background, bought a 93 kx500 basket case to restore for a winter project.during rebuild notice it’s got some mods.. ported/head mods/carb bored/psi rev pipe/reeds etc.Ive raced open bikes before but when I started it up ,wasn’t like any 500 I’ve had . thing barked like a top fuel dragster doing throttle wack. It was basically unrideable on the track.started to wonder if it had been used for something other than mx.( flat track?, half mile?hill climb? ice racing?)after a few thrill rides sold it before it killed me.any of you guys had something similar?
Yeah.. everyone I owned..... except...the z50 and xr75 I had...
2003 Ktm 250sx. That thing was unbelievable.
2002 Honda CR80. It was the year they still had a white tank right before they switched to dual shrouds. Thing was an absolute rocket ship and I was too inexperienced at the time. I felt guilty as it was a gift from my Mom and I didn’t have the heart to tell her it scared me so I just did whatever I could to tame it down and make it rideable. Eventually got used to it and even got it bored/stroked to a 115cc big wheel. Yes I was cheating and yes I got protested and DQ’d a few times and it was absolutely worth it 😜😂
Yep, 2003 YZ450F.
is your KX500 running lean??

Bought a new 1989 CR500. First to admit I was a squid, but holy crap. Gained tons of respect for those who could ride them.
Dude that bike was ridiculous. Had a buddy with one. Unreal
Personally, in 2008 I switched to from a YZ125 to my first ever 4 stroke. It was an 08 YZ450F. Way too much for me, especially since it was my first tractor
I had an 86 Kawasaki 250 that was modded and super fast. Looking back I wonder if my parents wanted to kill me Lol
My first KX500 was an 86, I bought it from a D37 open expert who ran up front a lot. Ported, pipe, top mount choke, etc. After getting the bejezus scared out of me for a couple months, I opened it up to do a top end and found that weird double cylinder power valve all out of wack, so I “fixed” it and got them opening up together. Called the guy I bought it from and told him about what I found, he said “put it back the way it was, you’re not gonna like it unless you want a LOT of hit”. So I ignored him, what the hell could he possibly know.. Holy moly, the thing was super mellow off idle, then as it gained a few rpm all hell broke loose and the thing went all crystal meth berserk and then revved forever. Difficult to ride in the desert, impossible to ride moto. Everyone who rode it that first day said it was the most explosive, fastest dirt bike they’d ridden. A couple of weeks later I called the PO again and asked how many teeth out of time the power valve needed to be to make it rideable..
Damn that must have been a hell of an experience! If you would have added a tooth to the rear sprocket it would been a lot better.
HaHaHa!
2003 yz 265 2 stroke . I told Tom Zont make it fast , well he did lol
1983 KTM 495
I sold my 20 ktm 450 sxf and bought a 250 sxf......That 450 wanted to hurt me as soon as i got aggressive with it.....what a machine though.....I can't believe how much power the 250's have now.....I can go faster and longer on the 250 and not fear for my life....I like to rev bikes and thats just a bad way to ride a 450 at my age.....
When you're 6 a mini-bike with a 3.5hp B&S engine is a rocketship!
It had a 45 rear, stock front, I can’t imagine how it would have run with a 50 tooth or bigger!
That thing put me on the ground over and over.. I’m a slow learner, I bought a couple more KX500s, rode them for about 10 years, enjoyed them for about 5 of those years, lol!
Yes. This thing. A Gavin Gracyk former race bike. Say what you will but it was the first bike in my three decades of riding/racing that scared me.
Pit Row
97 250 was very fast, other than that 84 cr500
Damn solid piece of Moto Iron. God Bless the Men who could tame these beasts......in stock form. Works versions of these bastards were not for us mere mortals. I envy any man who looked at one of these, or a CR 500, and said, "I need more"...... TOUGH. Wardy, and The Dogger sure made them look, and sound incredible.
9 year old me thought this 84 cr60 was too fast. Rode the 77 xr75 more.
2003 KTM 250sx has been mentioned a few times. Every time a twisted the throttle I was off the track. So I gave it to my 16 year old son! A flywheel and smoother power valve spring made it rideable, sort of.
You Sir, are a MAN. Brave, and yet still around to talk about it..... That alone puts you in Glover territory.
Yep... I said it. Wear it with pride, You lived to tell the stories of the 490........
I had an '83 490.. I had been out of racing for about 3 years, traded a guy for a set of home speakers. He had looped it out and wanted no part of it anymore. I race it at Ascot for the first time, what a mistake that was
. It's the bike that got me back into moto though. Bought a new 1989 YZ250 shortly after. The 490 will try to kill you when you least expect it..
I want to ride one so bad. I’ve heard they’re ignorant fast.
A friend had one. PC pipe. Still the fastest 250 I ever rode. Back to back with my new '03 RM 250, it felt like a legit 5 more hp.
You have to adjust for the chassis, brakes etc... I had a 1976 KX400. It seems like they claimed around 40 hp. As evil minded as that thing handled, half of that may have been too much! The power was smooth. A wheelie monster. It actually handled better with the front wheel off the ground. It bludgeoned enough of the neighborhood that they quit asking to ride it!
I rode a brand new ‘03 KTM 250sx at the 24hr Glen Helen. I still look under my bed to make sure it’s not trying to kill me. It was that fast and that ill-handling.
My 2024 RX300 in Sunshine mode with factory PV setting is way to fast for this old man. I had to tame it down to ride it and front end still pulls at will.
My 89 320 Maico.
Std, it was a truly great bike.
But, when the SEM ignition self destructed - the Magnets would part from the aluminium Flywheel - we only had a Motoplat Internal Rotor ignition available. The Tiny rotor, with the red plastic stator set up. So, absolutely bugger all flywheel effect.
It made it damned near unrideable.

I cured it by machining up a Dirty Great BIG Brass 'Top Hat' type flywheel , that keyed over the tiny rotors hex / spanner flats, with other bolts through it into the rotor. A case spacer allowed it to fit. It made it a (still very fast) Tractor. That, and making a pre-load adjustable Power valve cover, and experimenting with different PV springs, and fitting a Keihin Carb, created one of the best engines I've ever had. I should Never have sold it.
