Good Morning,
Just rode Bostwick Creek MX and I'm hurting. I'm talking the wind blowing through my hair hurts type of hurting. I'm 55, have a sedentary job but go to the gym 2-3 times a week. I haven't ridden for 2 months due to life and I'm wondering other then the obvious (ride, more, just suck it up, Ibuprofen) what other old guys do to recover. I can barely function for 2 days after every ride and any advice on recovery would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance...
It has to be tall boys though if you want the rejuvenating effects of that cold mountain stream.
Find a pool, light swimming helps. Stationary bike for warm up, then stretching… Mtn. Bike often, it mimics riding. Ride more often. Less sugar intake…. Make sure you are hydrated… you are 55, like me, everything hurts…..
Hurting from yesterday myself. I’m going to get on my Peloton bike for a recovery ride.
So it's better to push through and move rather than lay around and medicate?

Go do some light riding to move all those muscles that are hurting.
Ibuprofen, vodka and a couple days of couch time is my go-to. Also a little bit of cycling.. I’m a couple years older than you, I’ll tell you that it’s totally worth riding/racing as long as possible but the recovery just keeps getting tougher.
I washed / waxed the car yesterday and feel the same way today.
I tend to go in spurts riding too. If you haven't ridden in 2 months the recovery really is going to suck. We don't bounce right back from just riding let alone a hard crash. If you keep riding it will get better. The light bike ride and swimming etc. is good advice. Also try easy stretching if you can at the track. I usually really feel it after the ride home where you get bound up from sitting. I have also considered a massage to get knots and tightness out.
We all know there is no substitute for actual riding. When it comes to the gym, the older I get the more I focus on "functional fitness" and less isolated weight movements. Instead of bench press, I'm doing push-ups, instead of machine lat pull downs, im doing pulls ups. The work load in the gym needs to be dynamic like riding is. Kettlebell circuits, Turkish get ups, farmers carry, etc..
Resting and drinking beer aint it for recovery. Trust me I tried for 20 years.
Stretching and cold baths/plunges
Yes very much so.
BTW age doesn’t have anything to do with it. Push your body hard enough and it bitches back. In my youth I was so sore I couldn’t go to school but I could go riding to make it all better
Get rid of that lawyer job and come work with me. At 66, it is tough to do construction work but it beats going to the gym. Don't get paid to work out. Staying active on a daily basis really helps me with the recovery after riding. Doing a light workout when I get home from track days helps ease the soreness, not remove it, and I sleep better. too.
Meds don’t help so why bother. They slow down recovery, at least NSAIDS. Your body tells you it’s sore for a reason. Do some recovery work, get the blood flowing.
Tore my MCL last year and recovery was amazing due to no ice, no drugs and getting mobile as soon as humanly possible. Like 2 days after it tore. I’m 51.
Or high heat baths/sauna.
I’ve found getting back on the bike after a day or two for a light ride , working those same muscles is amazing for the energy it produces and obviously stretching the same muscles . Maybe not for everyone , but as cmotodad mentions , simply being more active is the best cure !
So just like you mentioned , yes , get up and pushing through is your best medicine !
As others have said, getting some stretching and exercise daily really helps. The thing that’s helped me the most is mountain biking.
I use the ice and heat rotation to pump fresh blood through to help recovery especially for injuries.
Pit Row
I have a couple Beers and then go to one of those Cheap Asian Massage parlors for a couple hours, does wonders for my sore Glutes.
Tailwind recovery mix.

Correct , stretch a couple times a day , also a
hot tub would be nice if you have access to one .
I have a Concept 2 rower (which by the way is the best workout for moto other than spinning laps) and I like to do a light 20 minute row the morning after I race and I feel like it speeds my recovery.
If you want to feel less sore after a day of riding. Make sure to get an ample amount of protein in your body within an hour post ride. Ideally, within a half hour. If you are working out 2 to 3 times a week a day of riding shouldn’t stove you up for a few day. I’m 55, have a desk job, and rarely sore from riding the following day post ride.
Yes, motion is lotion
Being fit tends to improve recovery rate, in general. Would recommend increasing off the bike fitness since riding alone is unlikely to work sufficiently or be a realistic option.
Save for properly dosing the activity with respect to duration and intensity, not much on the back end works better than placebo or doing nothing. This is the biggest modifiable factor, second is fitness, third is nutrition.*
Heat, cold plunge, massage, and stretching do not produce reliable improvements in activity related soreness, performance, or other metrics of recovery.
*the evidence on various dietary or supplement interventions and activity related soreness and recovery is mixed, but best practices include ~1.6g/kg/d of protein and ~3g/kg/d of carbohydrates as ballpark minimums split across 3-5 meals/day, otherwise consisting of minimally processed foods that are high in protein and fiber, and low in added sugars, added sodium, and saturated fats. Some supplements can help a bit, though most don’t and the contamination risk is significant. Would recommend focusing on fitness and properly dosed riding first.
Lmfao!!! But you're 100% correct
Same here. The Peloton is a great recovery tool besides being awesome cardio.
Hot tub, little walking. Just take it easy today but don’t just lay around.nothing wrong with a few beers or drinks. I am 58.
SIS REGO, plenty of water and next day for a brisk walk or gentle cycle.
A joint, ice bath, your wife giving you a rub, 800mg of ibuprofen, a hearty steak and a pint of beer to wash it down,
Sounds like a great way to have a stroke.
