Suzuki died/in its death stroke thanks to Consumer Reports and the Samurai.
Yamaha never updated the 490 unless you want to discuss the trail bike WR490.
For me, it's all about handling. I spent a great many years refining my riding skills, and for some reason they don't transfer over to a thumper as easily as they did for most people. Lots of riders just start out on 4-strokes for their first big bike now, so I guess it may be easier. I seriously cannot ride a 450 as fast as I can ride my 250t. Not in lap times, and definitely not in a battle between riders.
The engine braking on a 4-stroke wreaks havoc on the suspension and chassis during off-throttle moments. I find myself endoing in braking sections, going nose-heavy over jumps, and losing control due to the on/off nature of the power. The unpredictable stalling doesn't help; I've stalled every thumper I've ever ridden at least once. How does anybody ever adjust to those things? I'm honestly quite surprised that Doug Henry didn't say to the Yamaha engineers, "This YZ400F is a piece of shit. Don't waste your R&D money any further." I wish he had.
Clearly, people disagree with me or they wouldn't sell any Fs. I just cannot stand them. I'll never own another, and I may not even bother to ride one again.
here come the 350 guys......mark my words
Not really a well thought out angle. First, nobody really cares about cc's. It's a made up point. As if an awesome bike would somehow not be awesome because it's 250cc versus 500cc. Where is this rule written that a person's enjoyment from an item is decided by a number of cc's? As if identically performing motorcycles of 1cc and 1000cc would somehow mean something, like you'd hate the bigger or smaller on because the number casted into the cylinder makes you furious. And are motogp riders lame because their bikes are way more complex than any dirt bike? Or are their bikes lame? Unless someone is an amish farmer, they don't really have much room to talk about maintenance costs.

I think the beauty of a 2 stroke is drag racing.
No way in hell an 84 Cr500 made 60hp … if you could get it to start😂
Yeah , definitely takes better skill to ride one good. They are capable of going really fast if your skill allows it. I'm sure there are a lot of vet riders out there that'll tell you , a well tuned 250 is slow. Maybe it isn't the bike , but lack of skill.
Is it? Or is it the 800?
I'm with you. I rode 4 strokes since my CRF150R (I'm 28 now) and bought a YZ250 a couple years ago and I'm never going back. Especially since I ride for fun. 2 strokes offer the most fun that can be had on 2 wheels with a motor.
Besides nostalgia, besides the free feeling that makes it feel like a mountain bike strapped to a rocket, there's something beautifully simple about a two stroke race bike in a world where everything is more and more complicated and loaded with technology.
Plus I'm still struggling to get used to the engine braking and inertia and whatnot that comes with a four stroke, pretty stable but feels a little fat.
✌️
Also heard boobs aren’t amazing either 🤣🤷🏼♂️
What 250 2-stroke did you buy?
I want to see vitalmx members post on r/roastme
I own and ride both, but I just have more fun on a two stroke.
Different strokes for different folks.
They're all enjoyable, some just prefer a little less sag
Had a 2018 and 2022 KTM 350. Seemed like great bikes but just blah experience riding them. Also tried a RX 300 beta but it just seemed like too big and tall of a chassis. The engine was stupid fast. Decided to try a 2023 gas gas 250 2 stroke and riding is fun again. Not sure why I didn't get one sooner. Mine is the last year 250 carb version.
Lap times vs. A dyno. The 450.is a better bike. Like it or not. Ride what you want who cares.
Pit Row
A retired MX SX pro said to me. Four strokes are like welding with a mig welder. Any dummy can set the heat and pull the trigger. Two strokes are like Tig welding. Not everyone is cut out to be good on them.
It’s a challenge, it’s fun and requires skill. Not just stop in a corner, aim, twist the throttle and huck everything. Not everyone can ride them well or fast.
My main bike is a KTM EXC 250 that's built out with cone valves (euro road legal 250 2 stroke) for me its the best possible bike for all the riding I do. I'm 5'11 and 60kg on a good day so hardly a massive dude. I've also only had two four strokes and about 8 two strokes so I'm obviously more used to the two strokes.
I ride hard enduro, cross country/ hare scramble races, trails, dual sport stuff, hard pack mx tracks and deep sand mx (Lommel etc)
The only time I ever consider a 4 stroke to be the better bike is on huge soft dirt hill climbs, road sections and corner entry and exit on MX tracks. Every other situation I'd rather be on the 2 stroke.
Bikes currently on 250 hours and has had a piston at 150 hours and clutch plates just for the hell of it at 200 hours, never had a single mechanical issue that has left me stranded or even anything minor enough to cut the day short.
If I was a rich man I'd have my 250 smoker as a main bike, a 250/350 4 stroke for the track, a 125 for the fun of it and a 500 4 stroke for dual sport stuff. But if I've only got one bike then the 250 (or 300) 2 stroke is simply the only option that works for me personally. All dirt bikes are super cool and if someone bought me a 4 stroke I'd happily ride the hell out of it.
I started to ride and race when I was quite old on a 250f. Sold it and bought a ktm 250 two stroke, and I now added a gasgas 125 to the stable. First impression of the ktm was that it was fast, but had more torque and a wider powerband than I expected. Many people told me that I would find it extremely hard to ride and quite possibly hate it, but that wasn't the case at all. I think people that rode two stroke 15-25 years ago have this memory of a very tight and abrupt powerband, very little torque and finicky carbs. But I didn't feel like the ktm was like that at all. Other than turning the air screw a quarter turn in either direction, I never had to do anything to the carb. And since buying the 125, I haven't touch the 250 once. It's just so much fun! And I can say withouth the shadow of a doubt that the 125 me a better rider. I could have gotten there on a 4 stroke for sure, but the 125 by it's nature teaches you agression and momentum by forcing you to carry more speed into the corner and into the jump faces. Also for somebody who isn't too mecanichally inclined like me, I think they are easier and less scary to open up and learn from.
I am 51, overweight, riding mostly in sand with a bad left hand that makes clutching difficult, and have a TM144. It's great fun and I love riding it. Racing, not so much, Guys that I used to hang with on either a 250f or 350 are way ahead of me now. That's on me, not the bike. But sometimes being slow sucks - but the thought of parting with the 144 pains me, Maybe I'll add a 4 stroke at some point for race days. But I'd never say my 144 sucks. Skillwise, I suck.
I’m not fast, but I’m faster on a 2 stroke and have more fun.
Glad they make both!
I heard the 24 four strokes will have a place to hang your purse.
Not more fun to ride, but the racing was much better and more fun to watch, because of how aggressive they had to ride them. They definitely separated the men from the boys. That’s why RC JS CR were awesome, won races and championships on 2s and 4s.
2 stks. are the stick it to the man bike. Kind of like Rock&Roll used to be!
OP you should check out hard enduro...eg this years (and past) Erzberg.
There's some 4 strokes in there sure but all the front runners are on 2 strokes.
Cant get the link to embed soz but its legit.

“Harder to ride” … Than a 450? I’ve always had both and don’t agree that a 2 stroke 250 is harder to ride than a 450. I find it considerably less tiring, therefore easier.
In terms of skill, if pushing hard a 2 stroke is easier as well. If cruising, sure a 450 is easier, so maybe that’s where your comparison is coming from? Pushing hard on a 450 takes way more effort than a 2 stroke IMO.
100% true for me and my experiment last year. The 450 was easier to ride at 80%, but pushing it? Nope. It takes a ton of effort to keep a 450 in line when you get a little wild with it.
You’re incorrect. They added the tampon storage bar pad. Purse holder is 2025.
