Are folks calling for the 2a to be amended with every gun law? How many times has the ussc made a 2a interpretation and ruling? Hundreds? If only we could figure out how that happened without needing a hundred amendments...

I suspect we're more aligned with what we want in regard to immigration, but this post is confusing with reality. Are you saying that we should abolish the Supreme Court? Because your post makes no room for them to exist. I don't like overturning rvw either, but that's just what it is. Don't like it, don't put those people in...

I think the flaw in that is the presumption of a static society forever. There's nothing unusual about revising an interpretation, nor about evolving interpretations with the needs of society.

This sounds like a robotic approach when no other amendment takes such an approach. No amendment is needed and there's nothing inherently wrong with interpretations, thats literally the courts job. Same as how we choose who the 2a applies to, i.e. not 5 year olds and not felons, there would be nothing illogical about determining that the 14th does not...

Some other relatives I don’t know too well, fled Germany during WWII. They had it the worst from what I understand. Not because of the immigration process but, for simply being German during that time period. The thing most don’t understand is a huge portion of the German people didn’t have a choice but, to fight. It was either fight or, grandma is getting dumped over the balcony in her wheelchair.

I haven't read the original transcripts, so I don't know if they were specifically trying to cover the usage we see today, but I highly doubt it. And when you look at the various immigration acts going back to the 1890's, the restrictions they began enacting would fly in the face of such ridiculously low and meritless criteria like "coitus"...

From APLMAN99's post: So if someone claims: “The 14th Amendment was intended only for freed slaves.” the historical evidence doesn’t really support that absolute statement. A more historically accurate statement would be: “The 14th Amendment was adopted primarily because of the need to protect freed slaves, but Congress wrote the Citizenship Clause in broader language and rejected attempts to limit it only to former slaves.” That distinction is supported by both the text of the amendment and the congressional debates.

I'm very surprised they didn't overturn it. The issues surrounding what should happen to slaves after the civil war, which is very specifically and narrowly why the 14th exists, are no longer relevant. There would be no harm leaving the 14th in place for future slaves once bezos/gates/zuck/elon/theil privatize the government for profit, but I don't see how the 14th...

Early 20's? It got harder in 1924 because of concerns that stemmed from ww1. There was no more "just show up and you're in" type of immigration and they started capping the number that could enter. You either had to either be kinda lucky, persistent, or rich. The 50's were about the same as post-1924 and it's all way more...

Do you know when they came here? My family came from Italy in 1891 and immigration was a joke. You just needed a little cash, an address to go, not be obviously sick to avoid quarantine, and be willing to declare that you're not a polygamist or anarchist. Then you just live and work for ten years and apply for...

Big +1. Many movies are overrated imo, but Casblanca is suuuuper good. I love all the characters and undertones between them. Been a while since I've seen it, but OP's recommendation 12 Angry Men was a good one. Soylent Green was really good, though kind of borderline for "old" I guess. Cool Hand Look is excellent. I can watch that...

I have a excellent recommendation… “12 angry men” It’s from 1957 a black and white, Henry Fonda is the lead actor and the film is loaded with familiar actors when they were young Jack Klugman is in it also. My hope with this topic is for members here to give some old movie recommendations if you have any.

He's always gone where the money is and right now is no different, but that has no bearing on what's true. Trump is an obscene liar, but that doesn't somehow turn the true things he says into lies. The common denominator is all of us, where we seek imperfections in order to dismiss things that make us unhappy. That's the...
