New Media Rules?

A pretty major change is apparently coming to SMX media coverage in 2027.

Jason Weigandt says a new 21-page set of media guidelines was just released that includes a new paid credential structure for photographers and videographers, while also drawing a much harder line between “editorial” media and people shooting content commercially for teams, riders or brands.
That distinction already exists to some degree. SMX’s current credential rules say editorial photographers and videographers are only supposed to shoot for the outlet they’re assigned to and can’t distribute that work to teams, racers, sponsors or other third parties.

But adding significant credential costs could change the equation quite a bit.

Motocross media is a pretty small world. A lot of the photos and videos fans see every weekend come from independent shooters and smaller outlets, not gigantic media companies with unlimited budgets.
Depending on what those fees actually look like and how the rules are enforced, 2027 could look very different for the people standing trackside with cameras.

Weigandt made it clear he had only just received the document and was still going through it, so there are plenty of details still to come.

This one is definitely worth watching.

Weege mentioned this in his Wednesday video and asked if we care about this.

Of course we do. For at least two reasons.

  1. If the creators that produce the content that we all consume every week are shut out, then we all lose.
  2. If only “blessed” reporters are allowed to cover the sport, then “state approved” media problems are in play and the narrative is a controlled one. Almost sounds like a team manager being suspended for saying something in a private text thread. Crazy.

Weege, I’m a big fan, please don’t try to sweep this under the rug.

I’ve already seen videos about this out there…potentially more than a little concerning.

Seriously need to "grow the sport" in a different direction with a different entity.  The current cabal is out of control.

Feld: we are trying to grow the sport

Also Feld: let’s get rid of whoops, dragons backs, over under bridges, use less dirt, and have no media..

Don't worry, we'll still get all the information we seek... during the races. Like AP frolicking in the pool with his lovely family.

I can perfectly understand there are some "media" they want to get rid of...

Unfortunately, they'll probably still be there spreading shit on YT, just like cockroaches after a nuclear blast, since they don't need images or even being at the races to bring out their brilliant theories...

Chapter one: "How Feld tries to keep us from telling you the truth!"

Ain't that a bit counterproductive? 😏

Still, I wonder if ML can keep on posting fork caps shots taken from 150ft away...

🤔

Feld only cares about money.

Feld does not care one iota about our sport.

Feld will burn our sport to the ground if it makes them a few extra bucks then move on to the next thing .

We all know this.

The example trickles down from the very top.

How does this effect Burkeen?

A lot of his content won't be allowed under the new guidelines.

And he will have to pay a large fee so large that it will not make financial sense for him to cover sx?

That's not in the contract as Matt would say.

I'd argue that making it financially impractical to cover SX for a large number of photographers is the entire point.

Paid credential- moto media promotes the sport that puts dollars into the promoters pockets. That's how that relationship has traditionally been viewed.

This affects all of the combined SMX events.

From what I heard today, a good chunk of this doesn't have to do with NBC.

ML, doesn't Burkeen just shoot video from the stands? How can they stop that?

I guess it makes sense.

It's the NFL , I think who restricts re-broadcasts, so that tracks.

When I see stuff like this, other than the usual medial folks, I think of folks like our very own Rupert, and even snagletooth (aka Slowie) who I think may have already been banned.  Pulp and Vital will always have the means, the guys who do it for fun might be shit out of luck.

Sounds like they estimated the profits from everybody collecting content and decided they want the bulk of that for themselves. Will there be any incentive left for many of the content providers we fans have become accustomed to?

Burkeen has a media pass and full on track access.

If he were to shoot from the fences and upload his footage to YouTube or other major platforms, the promoters would content strike his videos and have them taken down.

Way out of scope of this topic, but what about random videos uploaded from the stands?

Sometimes a fan catches a pass/crash/altercation that the TV crew doesn’t

How likely is it that it will get removed?
