Would this help with everyone wanting to ride on the balls of their feet? These may have helped save Eli’s season  1DEA4D94-B27F-4C2F-BC84-E009665A8F74

Listen to the latest VitalMX podcast. They talk about Eli and the Lawrences using Tech 10s with the hyper flexion ribs removed to give the boot more flex in the direction these pegs prevent. Would these prevent the injury? Probably but he might have been riding around in 10th place all year with these too. Riding balls of your feet and getting super flex at the ankles really helps drive the rear tire into the ground so you can accelerate harder. It also gives you a little extra "suspension".

These go against the technique taught by Ryan Hughes and AJ Cantanzaro.  Who both strongly advocate riding their the balls of the feet.

I’m really curious to see their response to this actually…

If you’ve never used those before, the rear supports are sort of down and out of the way. I believe the idea is to only hit the support when your heel flexes into it. So you can still ride on your toes, but also have some support for your ankle when you case it.

I know other riders also have the hyper flexion ribs removed from their Tech 10s.  I immediately thought about this when Eli was injured.

Would be interesting if they made the position of the support adjustable.  Give riders the opportunity to decide between more freedom and less support or vice versa.

These still allow you to ride on the balls of your feet. The supports are lower than the peg and just doesn't let the ankle flex too far.

They do have different pin height options, so you could put taller ones on the main portion of the peg and the shorter pins on the ankle support or vice-versa.

I run these on my bikes and really like them. I'm surprised more guys in SX don't use them.

The question of the day is, how far is too far? It's not too far until it is.

I think Ronnie Renner runs these. Seems like a good idea.

Interestingly enough I saw Carson Mumford running these on his PC Kawi rather than the normal pegs PC makes.

I use them on my KX450 and like them, however feel that the rear pad could be a bit lower, maybe 1/2-3/4” for a bit more flex travel. The set screw heights aren’t enough to alter the position much.
Stank dog was using them for years, I think he still does.

Not sure about Eli s situation.

But i know they help with old mxers, with mangled ankles and feet who need that support. They were hard to find for awhile not sure about now

Having something stop your heel at some point has to be better than going out in a wheelchair after your toes touched your shin.

That may have to do with the calf injury he has been nursing.

Removing safety feature from A-Star boots that prevent this type of injury.    Not a smart move.

Like OP, I thought about these pegs as a preventative feature after Saturday nights shocker.     It makes good sense to me.

That would make sense, it looks like he's only running it on one side.

A vet rider from our area in Tennessee (Tom Crain) invented these pegs years ago in response to his ankle injuries.  They became popular for vet riders in our area.  Tom was one of our sponsors and my son (Josh Cartwright) used them on all of his big bikes as an amateur.  Josh also did a lot of GNCC and Hare Scramble races as an amateur and loved the pegs.  But as a professional, he does not use them in SX.  At least for him, he doesn't like the way they feel in the whoops.

I run them and love ‘em. I don’t notice the support during nominal operations.

Most pros don't run them because they will say they are restrictive in movement.  But in reality, its an ego / cosmetic issue as they "don't look cool", much like Stegpegz (which do help with arm pump, but they don't look cool either).  I'm wondering if more riders will get past the lack of cool factor and start running these after seeing what just happened to Eli.  Seems like a pretty good return on investment if you ride like these guys do.  Personally, I tend to move my feet around on the pegs quite a bit.  I'm on my balls of my feet +80% of the time, but there are times I move them when coming up to a big jump landing or something that could hammer my ankles.  I don't think you have to ride on your balls of your feet 100% of the time, JMHO.  +80% of the time, yes but not 100%.

I started running them after having a sore Achilles.  You only notice them if you need them.
