The rules the rule so fine with the penalty. Question I have is why the Red Cross flag? Is that not to protect a downed rider and the medical team treating them? Where were the medics if this was an incident warranting a Red Cross flag?

i used to think this too til i flagged a pro race. red cross is a wheels on the ground flag. yellow is not. these rules are not the same as most motocross racing as i knew it growing up.   ....pro racing yellows are not as strict as what we grew up with. every rider and safety crew know that wheels on ground flag is out you cannot leave ground or gain advantage thru the obstacle being flagged. its the same rule for every rider and was discussed extensively before the race. what i learned from it was the yellow really is just a be cautious but keep racing. which was what i found different than grew up with....red cross in ama pro racing isn't just for injury or rider on the ground in vulnerable position.

Taking points is the only way of enforcing the rule . They don't about monetary fine.

not always 7 points.

7 points is also one of the options.  It's not like they made it up on race day...  And it's what they would choose if the person receiving the penalty was the race winner.

He may not have doubled like Sexton, but wheels on the ground is the rule….

Still no explanation from AMA on how Webb does not get docked to.

Do you not get it?  They don't take a win away.  Equivalent points is 7.  It's really simple.

What is the point you're trying to make.

Based on the rule Webb should have a penalty as well. Like someone else on here said i was also watching Webb when Ricky made his comment and noticed Eli followed the rules and kept his bike firmly planted to the ground. Situations like these sometimes reveal how hard these guys were going at that time Sexton balls to the wall Cooper half balls to the wall and Eli in full control. Rule is a rule Webb needs a penalty too

Because he didn’t full send the double and gain a massive advantage like Chase. This isn’t hard.

Yes very simple.

My initial comment was you were incorrect in 7 points is not an “option”.

The rule is 2 points plus 2 positions.

I’m going to take the “option” to leave this as my last response on the topic for everyone else sake.

So is it a wheels on the ground flag? Or a don’t clear a double flag?  I hate how the AMA selectively enforces crap….and that there are some that can influence them.  It’s like Anderson being put on probation and Barcia not??  Barcia does 2 blatant takeout moves in the race right after Anderson is put on probation and nothing but crickets.  He slammed Chase last night and for the 98% of the people here that don’t race that can f-ing hurt bad or cause a bad injury.  I’m not going to argue if that riding is ok or not but the AMA sucks at being fair and consistent….and if you don’t think Roger has influence then you don’t pay attention.

Yes but isn't the rule wheels on the ground , or is it open for interpretation like virtually every other AMA rule ?

Every single rule has wiggle room in every sport. Having your wheels slightly come off the ground isn’t the same as full sending a double. The race officials have to apply common sense when determining penalties. Docking Webb the same as Sexton would make no sense.

Maybe Sexton’s was viewed as excessive, because he didn’t show extreme caution, didn’t slow down(gained speed to double), his wheels came off the ground and gained an advantage.

Whereas Webb slowed down but wheels did come off ground then rolled the double too.

That is about all I can come up with trying to be neutral and logical.

Then again, what am I thinking. I am a Vitard, being neutral and logical is not the way Lolol.

Maybe docking him 3 points would make sense . Did it not give him an advantage over Eli who followed the rule to the letter ? Just playing devils advocate here .

1) I think they should have given the win to Webb. Moved Chase to 4th place. He really gained a ton of time on Webb/Tomac with that jump. That gap he created by jumping probably influenced the way the race played out.

Webb even commented that he decided to 'wait' for the penalty. Meaning he backed off some. Kind of silly in my view...AMA to Chase, "You got 4th place points but we let you keep the win." Stupid. That is a PR decision for the factories.

Barcia is a jerk in how he rides. Nothing new here. The AMA should have fined him for hitting Chase like that. No excuse for it.

So if Chase had landed about 5 feet after the takeoff instead of full send, what would the appropriate action be?

For the record, I'm a Sexton fan and he 100% deserves the punishment handed out. What Webb did looked to be in the grey area,he made an effort to slow down, but still had a decent amount of airtime. Where is the line? Only completing the jump? I realize you can't penalize someone for their tires leaving the ground a few inches, but he was definitely in between the extremes. If I was Honda, I would definitely protest back against Webb.

2) Did AP7 have to roll the double too? I didn't see it. If he did roll it and Chase jumps it that probably influenced the race as well (as someone else said).

So the rule is penalty only for full sends? I thought it said jump which means the motorcycle leaves the ground and goes in the air.

I’m a Sexton fan too, he’s a local for me.

But this protest what you don’t like culture thing is annoying. Look at it the other way. If Sexton would stop crashing in big moments by himself, and keep it together as Webb does. This event wouldn’t even matter because Sexton would be that far ahead on points.

If it is a mistake, so be it, the officiating crew are human too. Mistakes will be made. Control what you can control, like don’t full send on a Red Cross flag and don’t self implode and crash.

Sexton should have so many wins right now the 7 points would not matter. True statement. This is just another silly mistake by Chase not staying focused. One thing is for sure though, he has the speed to win out the rest of the way.

The option developed when Marvin got the EXACT SAME PENALTY a few years back.  The precedent was set.  Effectively making it the rule.

I could be wrong but these AMA rules are interpreted at the discretion of the AMA referee correct? Nothing in racing is truly black and white so it has to be this way, right or wrong.

Did Webb gain an unfair advantage with his wheels getting six inches off the ground there? It seems the AMA decided that he didn't. No doubt Chase gained a lot by jumping the double.

I'm a Honda fan and pulling for them to win the Supercross title and rules are rules and have no problem with Sexton losing 7 points, BUT! if the rules say wheels on the ground with a Red Cross flag then Cooper Webb needs to be docked the same amount of applicable points.   Sure! Sextons jump was much more blantant, but if the rules are specific and 2 of the riders in the championship hunt are the offenders then the penalties should be equally applied.  Sure hope Cooper Webb doesn't win the Championship by 5 points over Chase Sexton at the end of the season.
