Yes, that's right, I'm just a silly dreamer and YOU have a handle on the future. There's just one problem with that: reality. I'm a car nut as well as a bike nut, and my favorite show to watch is the one called, "Auto Mundial." They preview all the planned new vehicles as well as critiquing the latest offerings, and all you have to do is watch that show to understand the wave that's coming. Right or wrong, it's coming. You're like that dude who hears of a gargantuan volcanic eruption a few miles from shore, who then looks out the window of his beach house and says, "The waves looks fine to me, they must all be wrong" Just because it's not tomorrow yet doesn't mean tomorrow isn't coming.

For the longest time, guys on here would breathlessly speculate as to whether Suzuki or Kawi or Honda might go back to building two-strokes. They even said Triumph should build one. Funny, isn't it, how all that speculation suddenly stopped once the Stark Varg broke cover? Denial is a precious thing, for it offers such lovely comfort to those averse to change - this I understand - but ya gotta know when to wake up and smell the coffee.
you make a lot of assumptions about someone you know nothing about. actually, I have nothing against electric bikes or cars. I just marvel at the naive assumptions people like you make about EV's taking over. I can't wait to see the giant power grid crashes that happen in california when they outlaw ICE vehicles and make everyone plug their cars in every night.

electric bikes are coming and fast but ICE bikes are not going to just disappear or cease production.

Nothing to race it in.

racing formulas are not the same as what you sell to the road going market.

Triumph probably have a whole host of products under development, but the SX project has to follow what the SX formula is.

You could lose half of the battery if it charged itself.

It's admirable, the loyalty some of you have to what is quickly becoming our collective romantic past, but regardless, the future isn't nearly as curious about who will debut the LAST big-selling 250 or 450 motocrosser as they are about who will debut the FIRST big-selling electric motocrosser. The buzz of any new ICE bike, regardless who makes it (Triumph or whoever), will be quickly swallowed up by the buzz of what's coming NEXT. Triumph can build whatever the heck they want to, they're a company run by grown ups, after all, but if the bike they're building makes a lot of noise and has valves and/or a piston, it's a just another dinosaur wondering what that giant flaming rock in the sky is.

Let me put it this way: if you were given a choice between reading a glossy, beautifully made, well-written, well laid out, newspaper that had last month's news in it, or a simple black-and-white newspaper that had today's news - which would you choose to read?*

*It's a trick question: nobody reads newspapers anymore. No matter how good they were or weren't, they're all relics of the past now, seemingly overnight, and that is precisely my point. Good luck, Triumph.

Exactly this, was out for drinks with a friend and his neighbour joined us for a little, quite high up in one of the petroleum companies here in the UK.

Anyway he informed us that if just 15% of the UK ran electric cars then production and more importantly distribution would have to increase 4 fold! Not going to happen.

My thoughts are, and have been for years hydrogen.

Yes, the battery could be smaller but you’d need an engine with a generator, a fuel tank, exhaust pipe, airbox, etc. I think it’d end up being pretty heavy compared to both a pure electric bike or an ICE bike. Google says hybrids weigh about 10% more than a comparable gas car, bikes should be about the same. Plus we would be back to oil changes, air filters, gas cans.. Hybrid seems okay at best in a car, but it’s pretty complicated for a race bike.

I mentioned in an earlier post the possibility that Triumph my be working on a series of electric off road bikes given the climate and trends that are apparent these days. To me it doesn't make a lot of sense to try to introduce another gasoline powered bike into a technology that is getting so heavily pushed against. We all know that electric off-road bikes are coming but with the exception of KTM all of the companies that are or have put out electric off-road bikes are small and not all that well established, thus apt to fail just as Alta did.
To lend credence to my "educated guess" Triumph just released there newest prototype motorcycle, the TE-1, which is an electric model shown below. Also you will find a link to a Cycle World article about this venture below too. This shows that they are serious about electric motorcycles and common sense would lead me to believe that is the direction that their off-road bikes are headed. Remember, you heard it here first!
Oh, also regarding projected horsepower, Triumph is claiming 174 BHP on the prototype model below!

https://www.cycleworld.com/story/motorcycle-news/triumph-te-1-electric-…
Wrong. It will have a piston. Just the one.

Plus it's not quiet, and still has the rotating mass of a piston and crank, and sounds like shit being a constant rpm. Worst of both worlds. Good for cars, bad for toys.

I had to laugh as I saw a recent article about Biden lauding a $5billion plan to build 500,000 charging stations in the next 5 years or so. I thought 500,000 seems like a good amount. Until I learned there’s already 100,000. How is this going to work in cities with giant apartment building with hundreds of cars parked in the basement? Or all the cars that park in the street everywhere? I really think we will be looking at each other in 2035 and saying WTF did we do?? How were we this stupid?

Just had this conversation with a client on Tuesday in down town Chicago. Husband and wife had a real hard on for green energy and tesla/ electric cars. We talked about everything from the grid, black outs and most importantly how the fuck are you gonna charge your car in your parking garage that doesn't have any type of outlet set up for charging in a building that has 696 parking spots. 2 for each unit plus staff. And that's just on midsized building. Electric is still farther out then they want you to believe.

I agree it working is far off but many big vehicle manufacturers are gearing up to be all electric by 2035, including Kawasaki and friends.

This seems logical to me. I read a “study” that stated that if 75% of the US drove EV vehicles the strain on the grid would only increase a few %. This is the problem, stupid people don’t stop and ask well how the fuck is that? They just regurgitate it as fact.

My KLR's are the Adventure model with the bags, lights and a little extra protection. They're a blast to ride and I actually enjoy wrangling them on single-track. They've got great range and once I get a Cogent shock and fork kit in'em, they'll be capable of a bit 'better pace' off-road.

Honda would sell so many XR650R's if they brought it back with e-start, fuel injection, and made it street legal. It would be the ultimate 650 adventure bike.

I have good friend that works for Chrysler preproduction testing. Almost all the vehicles are 100% electric. Even huge cargo vans. So, that's what they're doing. Oh, Tesla also tests there, and friend says they are going off. Just fyi near future push.

Fast charging stations that service 1000’s of cars a day, like a gas station does?

Give us your idea, in actual number form, of how many you feel that would be. Try to just guess first, then research afterwards. Reason being, once you research you'll find the US market is small and actual forecasts are not enough to justify even the marketing costs, let alone the R+D expense.

I'm skeptical, yet hopeful. Good and bad things about 'electrics' now, but hope things change. I do know there's a mass influx of the Tesla vehicles in cali. Like, way, way more than I would have expected.

any business that is connected to the grid can offer the service of charging. Gyms, grocery store, MX track, strip club are all viable places to charge your ev. NO need for a huge tank of fuel underground and trucks to constantly refill, just sell the electricity that is already wired to the business

This is only true if your business/building has enough extra capacity to run a charger without effecting the current business operation. For example, most fast chargers use 480v 100amp service and 95% of businesses, unless commercial, will only have a single 100amp service supply.

It is also illegal to re-sell utilities in most jurisdictions without proper permits and safety’s in place.

This is not to say that’s not a viable idea for the future, the infrastructure just isn’t there at this time.

Owning a solar powered grid tye home for 18 years. Grid tye is a ripoff. The carrying charges provided by the grid servers keep going up exponentially annually. The cost to transport energy, the many extra fees attached on your bill makes owning solar array questionable. Plus need to remove the solar system to reroof your home. Then reinstall after new roof is replaced (I don’t recommend a roof top solar system). Plus in snow area generate little to no power for 4-5 months/ year. Solar has many drawbacks. Since owning for almost two decades, I don’t recommend for short term in colder, winter type weather (most of Canada and northern states).

How would a charging station service 1,000s of cars a day????? Even if it only took 1 minute to recharge (ludicrous example) that would be 1,440 cars in a 24 hour period IF they somehow took zero seconds in between cars hooking up to it. I think current charging stations take 45 minutes for a full refill. I saw a Tesla owner in a video in ND saying on the 110 charger in the cold weather, the batteries drain faster than the charger can handle. Oh and your range drains way fast in the cold. He said his 300 mile range was like 50 in the cold, and because of that he didn’t make it home once and had to get flatbedded home. He loved the car though but it was a novelty for him. He had a Ford Raptor and some other sports car in his garage next to the Tesla. His daily driver outside. He said never would he have gotten the Tesla if it had to be his daily driver.

It all good because the goberment is going to pay for the charging stations through your tax dollars or a surcharge on the vehicle registration.

The current fast chargers require 480v power at 100+ Amps to run. I’m not sure if you were talking about extension cords out the window or what but I’m sure they aren’t cheap to install once you have that power available. Those are the ones that can provide a “fast” half hour charge. Anything less than those you’re measuring in hours not minutes.

100 amp? If you’re talking about a kiosk at a mall, sure. Very few modern facilities have a single phase 100 amp service. Not sure where you are from or if this is just purely anecdotal.

Translated from a French article.

After a thunderous buzz about the rallying of Ricky Carmichael and Ivan Cervantes to the ambassadorial posts a year ago, there is no more news from Triumph on the off-road front. Has the English brand put aside or completely dropped its “green” desires? Nothing of the sort. It is even a spectacular and massive arrival in cross, enduro and rally that the company would prepare...

The all-terrain makes dream, distributes the image at a time when communication seems essential. One of the reasons which pushes certain manufacturers accustomed to unrolling asphalt, to take a close interest in off-road sport and its products. There is, of course, trail running, a fashionable sector whose market shares are constantly growing. Honda, Yamaha after BMW but also KTM, Husqvarna, Triumph or Ducati develop their production and their offers to stick closely to the expectations of a public in love with wide open spaces, as if a growing desire for freedom was emerging. And then there are the more advanced sectors of cross and enduro. Few sales but a lot of images and the way for brands to reach customers from an early age. Because when we are small, it is through motocross and almost nothing else that we will live our first experiences. They may bring loyalty to a brand and guide them later towards the purchase of a big trail, a touring car, a roadster...

It is in this spirit and this context that Triumph plans to enter the dance. The brand has an all-terrain history, driven by the media and sporting exploits of Steve McQueen on a Bonneville, then taken up commercially by a scrambler 1200 XE model.

Today it is the sport and the real thing that the leaders of the British brand want to tackle. To the categories “sport-GT”, “sports”, “roadsters” and “trails” should soon be added the “off road” class with cross and enduro 4-stroke models, 250 and 450 on one side, 250 and 350 on the other before seeing the ranges expand. To answer a natural question, these Triumphs off road should be 100% Triumphs, equipped with chassis and engines produced in England. Backed by the Indian giant Bajaj, which also owns shares in KTM, Triumph will not use Austrian technology as had been mentioned, but will make a point of producing "in-house" motorcycles, even in such particular and intolerant sectors as the motocross and enduro. The motorcycles could appear in production in the middle of the year before rolling out in 2023 in the main championships. Triumph is clearly targeting America to give its MX models some luster. It is thus mentioned a participation in the SX 250/450 championship from January.

Brand emissaries have already visited a few SXs to meet with the AMA and promoter Feld in order to refine their arrival. With which pilots? What staff? This is the major question of the moment. Carmichael deployed as an ambassador, everything suggests that there will be strong to hope to "play" against the Japanese and Austrian teams in place. The name of Blake Baggett circulated but why not downright Ken Roczen, in a complicated phase at Honda when Chase Sexton took the lead over the German? Another orientation, in enduro with here again great ambitions and a planned commitment in EnduroGP in several categories. It will be for the English brand, from the first year to prove the performance of its motorcycles, and especially its reliability in the hope of quickly attracting a demanding clientele. Credible builders abound. In addition to KTM, Husky, GasGas or Sherco, there are high-performance Italians (Beta, Fantic, TM). In short, nobody expects Triumph when the level of performance of enduro machines has never been so high.

Triumph off-road is good news for the off-road market and motorcycling in general. Smiling news for the market which needs dynamism, for the customers who will benefit from a more extensive offer as well as for the pro pilots for whom doors could open. We also mention, of course, the arrival of new trails. The Tiger is in place. The "rally" option is not neglected. Why not a team in the Dakar soon?… First photos… We hope soon!

Don't get too excited, this info hasn't been confirmed.

I was just in my local Triumph dealership and one of the sales guys told me that their rep said the new MX bikes would be showing up in 6 months. Finding it hard to believe that they could keep the lid so tight on this, if in fact the bike is almost ready. He also didn't have any details to share, just that the bikes would be in showrooms in 2022.

In 6 months it will be snowing again and 2022 is pretty much gone so they will be out for 2023 if something comes out finally.
