Has there ever been a number permanently retired from professional AMA racing?

Would sure like to see a number retired in Magoo's name.... Marty Smith as well.... perhaps their 3 digit rookie numbers... or a two or three digit number they were best known by....

Just out of respect , # 4 should not be requested by the top riders of the time. Those boots will never be filled.

So in 2050 Haiden Deegan Jr. will have earned a permanent number. His first available choice? #84. #1-83 were retired because you know, history.

I dislike this idea more than I hate the old-timer's, run the number you placed in points, idea. That's saying a lot.

Agreed, Blake Baggett's 4th place in the 2018 season should be forever remembered.

See, that's how the world would work if you ran it....

But, if someone with a few brains cell left did it- only two or three digit number, nothing under 100.. only after you have passed... retire one number every five years (take 500 years to retire 100 numbers).... you gotta be a BIG deal to get a retired number... like Magoo... like a Hannah... like an RC...

Magoo gave this sport EVERYTHING... he deserves it...

AMA retired Nicky Hayden's number after he passed. That is the only one I can think of, please correct me if i'm wrong and there are others.

I would like the AMA to temporarily retire the number for the current* all time winning racer. Right now, that would put the #4 on the list as all time win leader between Mx/Sx.

If someone ever surpasses him, then it would be unlocked.

Not sure if they did? I see a Muaricio Hildago using #69 in the Stock 1000 class in AMA road racing.

2 digit numbers that are above 100...got it.

So you only get a number retired if it was over 100...sorry RC, MC, Stew, RV, RD5, Rick Johnson, Jeff Ward, you had an unbelievable career but your number wasn't over 100. With this logic, Mike Alessi and TP199 are the only ones with retired numbers.

I guess my few remaining brain cells are having a hard time processing what the actual fuck you are talking about.

Heard a rumor rider #’s are going to be replaced with QR code’s for branding purposes. Phone goes straight to riders website as you watch so you can buy a sick tshirt or hat. Branding bro.

The only league-wide type of number retirement I'm good with is Jackie Robinson's. If there was someone who had done something instrumental to that level in MX then I'd be okay with it, but there isn't.

Whats the point??? So I think you are trying to say that Stewarts 259 should be retired, McGrath #125 ????

I’m with Kyle. WTF are you talking about or trying to accomplish.

If it’s about SX? The number 2 is in this category, too.

I’m jus’ sayin’…

This.

Plus in another 20 years or less, the younger generation won't even know who guys like RC, McGrath, Dungee, Bubba are and will have little respect for any of them. Just like guys like Hurricane, Weinert, Smith, etc - it's only the old timers who know them or have any respect for them.

It was MotoGP who retired the #69, pretty cool in my opinion.

Perfect season would be a legit reason to retire a number if any….#4 and #7 but that’s just me.

Race with the number you earned during the previous year and for crying out load, get rid of permanent numbers!.

Permanent numbers is just stagnation in the sport, no imagination.

How is it stagnating the sport? The guy who finished 7th on the season still finished 7th on the season, regardless of whether he's running #25 or #7.

Just think of all the legends who have run #1 at some point, that's gotta be first in line to be retired...

True but only “we” know that. Try explaining the numbering system to a casual or new fan.

Run what you earn the year prior. Simple!

I laughed out loud at 2 digit numbers above 100!
