NorCal is awesome except for cost of living. There are a lot of tracks in the Sacramento area (I can think of 5 public tracks), many nearby options for non-moto fitness work (MTB especially), and SoCal isn't that far away. All down the Valley are tracks too - Diablo, Oatfield, Club Moto, DT-1 MX Park, and more. The OTHG has 4 CA chapters and run a 10 month series that's really well managed. The Sierras have lots of trail riding if that's your thing. You can ride street all year too - weather is good enough. Traffic sucks in most of CA but you can lane split.

I second this. You can hit a track 6 days a week up here. A wide variety too. Hardback, sand, national caliber. A day practice, night practice. As someone who grew up in Florida, which is also great, I like it out here for riding just as much.

If you want nonstop Moto you have three real options. SoCal, NorCal, Florida/GA.

Really though, how is it out there? I’ve been thinking of moving to UT but it’s hard to imagine any Sunday culture other than church would be thriving in Deseret.

Yep Temecula. Probably at least 7-8 tracks within a 2 hour drive, and a couple places with several tracks each (Pala and Lake Elsinore) within 20 minutes

I completely agree. I moved up here from the Central Coast where all we had at the time was Zaca Station and a couple private tracks. There's lots of places within striking distance from Sacramento, and I can ride my KLR650 all year on the street and in the mountains. I love it here.

Or San Clemente or Oceanside, Pala, Barona, Amago, (crappy but a place to ride none the less ) Elsinore, Cahuilla Creek, Perris, State Fair (Starsest) Glen Helen, all within 90 minutes, and LACR, and Racetown within 2 hours. Want to ride off road ? Ocotillo Wells ( Desert ) snd Big Bear ( mountains ) each under 2 hours. And if’s 30° cooler than Temecula.

Why is Texas scene terrible?

Houston only has 3 palms which tracks have been the same layout for years. Rio is very hit or miss.

Austin has Murphy’s, spoaks, lone star Mx

San Antonio has cycle ranch

So to be worth it to ride while living in Houston you have to go to Austin or San Antonio for a decent track

And Dallas tracks are hit or miss on being open it seems like , most tracks there I wouldn’t return to due to what they call “prepped” practice
As for Austin your forgetting Austin MX (ADV). Aside from Murphy’s, Spoaks, Lone Star, which are all good tracks w good prep, there are a couple other tracks but I think more of a novice layout. And from what I hear Dallas area moto is really good, a lot of tracks to choose from. As far as cost of living, TX is a lot cheaper than Cali and less traffic. A little hotter in the summer and a little colder in the winter compared to Cali.

I live in Philadelphia, equidistant from Southwick and Budds Creek, and a quick drive to the NJ pits. It doesn’t suck, except in January and February.

Yup and now that zaca and piru is gone there is nowhere close by except private tracks..I’m about to wake a 5 and 9year old up at 4:45am to drive to cahuilla creek so we can moto..definitely not ideal

Honestly it’s the best kept secret in the US. The Mormon thing is overblown I think. For off-road riding it’s hard to beat. Gobs of single track within an hour of the salt lake valley. Dunes a couple hours away, tons of riding in the Moab, San Rafael swell area. For tracks it’s pretty solid. 1 state run facility 10 minutes from down town that is open 3-4 days a week. A public track about an hour south of the city. Private membership track 50 minutes north and a handful of others that are open select weekends throughout the year

Year round riding is available even if you live in SLC. Then there’s the mtn biking, camping, fishing, boating etc that is really good

I live in North Texas, but have made many trips to So Cal to ride. The tracks are better for the most part in California, the natural landscape, climate, and dirt give it an advantage. Texas has good tracks, however because of the climate and weather changes, you never really know what condition the tracks are in unless its summer, then its just really really hot!

Thanks, that’s valuable insight. I’m admittedly pretty ignorant to the culture, but I’ve heard the LDS influence is unavoidable in some aspects and unnoticeable in others. Good to know the moto scene is strong. UT seems like an overall pretty good place. I’ll have to look you up if I make it out there.

One of the most unintentionally funny posts I've read.........

Georgia is great because you can go other places. Laughing Laughing Laughing

I love living in central Florida partially because I'm 10 minutes from Pax but I would love to experience the legendary tracks of SoCal but I probably couldn't live there long.

Friend wanted to move to north Florida to ride the roads of Georgia. Florida due to taxes.

This summer I'll be moving away from southern Connecticut but I'm not sure where yet. Out of curiosity where is the best place to live for moto training and riding? Considering access to tracks, weather and cost of living. Is Southern California still the place to be? Florida? Texas? You tell me!
Not really an upgrade weather wise but the difference of moving to northern part of Mass west of Boston puts you in a good sweet spot if you're staying somewhat local. Depending your spot could be within an hour and a half of Crow Hill, NHMX, Winchester Speedpark, MX101, MX23, Southwick, Capeway Rovers. And 1:30-2 hours of MX207 and Wareham MX. Hard to beat anywhere that you're within two hours of 8 tracks that range from sand to mountain hardpack

This man makes an excellent point, MX in New England is really not that bad. From a racing standpoint there are excellent organizations and sanctioning bodies, an abundance of tracks. The real drawback is the Northeast is completely ignored by the industry and the rest of the MX world. This really only matters if you are trying to go pro and expect some support. There is more local competition in the Northeast than anywhere (that I have ever seen), but we could use a few more John Dowds, Doug Henry's and Jimmy D's pretty bad.

Colorado is horrible. Only paved asphalt tracks and side by sides share the dirt tracks. I don't recommend Colorado. Cheeseburgers are $20 here now and cats and dogs are living together. All dirt bikes are required to run a governor that limited your bike to 15 mph.

Outside of the liquor laws, assuming you drink, it’s pretty much unnoticeable in the SLC area (some small towns out in the rural areas, have everything closed on Sundays and some other odd things...but the slc area has none of that)...and the best news is half the population stays home on Sundays...so you pretty much have restaurants, golf courses, and Moto tracks to yourself.

But in all reality, it sucks here...nobody should come. Keep driving to Idaho.

I was thinking about starting a thread like this recently. Is there any better moto scene than SoCal? And if so, where? I know Texas has a lot of good tracks and good weather, and that’s the only other place that comes to mind. Does Florida have many public tracks? Obviously the scene here isn’t what it used to be but it’s still pretty good. Thankful to have 6-7 awesome tracks within an hour and one decent race series
Oregon and Washington have the best soil, but many restrictions.
My advice would be to buy some land in a heavily vegetated part of Oregon or Washington.

And let the dirt bike XP Rain down upon thee. Woogabooga

We lived outside of Eugene on 20 forested acres and had bitchen tracks cut out in the woods. The problem was the rain kept us from riding a solid 6 months out of the year.
We could mud ride if we were hard up to get on the bikes but it sure was a hassle cleaning off 40ibs of mud anytime we took the bikes out during the rainy months. Loved it there but for riding I need a dryer climate

I'll be in Southern California for a long while. Yeah it's expensive AF (and will undoubtedly rank last comparing cost of living to any other decent state for riding), but if you can swing it there is endless shit to do.

Need to make 100,000k plus a year if you want a comfortable life renting near the coast. Positive side is you live in a vacationland so all the money you would spend on traveling you can just use for your cost of living. I wished I moved here sooner in life.

If I had to live inland I would live in a different state. It's not that great.

There definitely are tracks but not the best dirt. I moved here from New England.
What are you renting in Pacific Beach on 100K a year? A trash can or a dog house? Laughing Tongue Silly

DFW has Underground, Johnsonville, Village Creek, River Valley, Oak Hill, South Central, Buffalo Creek and Athens and you can ride here year round. It’s far from terrible.

If you went to central North Carolina you would have as many MX tracks available to you as California with about the same drive times or less if you factor in traffic. Cost of living isn't even in the same galaxy as CA and in my eyes better dirt. Little warm in the summer and a little chilly in the winter but you can ride all 12 months.

In all honesty where I am isn't too bad in Virginia, Richmond area seems to be the ticket for "close-ish to everything".
