You mean the kid with the dislocated hip that was thrown in with the sharks of 250 Supercross after racing a 125 in the B class last summer? Solid development plan, I see that going well.

The Austrian 250 program is a meat grinder, has been for a while
The Austrian 250 program works pretty good in Europe. They won almost every 125/MX2 world championships the past 20 years.
It’s just here the amateur system isn’t that good, kids race 6 big races a year at most and just one race really matter. Which makes it harder to spot talents.
Kids in Europe learn to “manage” a championship when they ride 50’s, some countries have like 8 rounds National championships for mini bikes which prepare them much better going to the pro ranks.

Yes...Winning the MX2 Championship is a good little starter program to then come race the kids that are just finishing the LL Championships.

Worked out when Roger did it to Dungey. Max was looking very solid before his injury.

Who’s fault if Tom Vialle and Jorge Prado (the last 2 MX2 champions) are younger than some of the Loretta’s graduate?
I would like to see Tom come to the US and race 250. The 250 class isn’t a kid class anyway, the average age is around 25 years old...

Of the top 14 riders in the 450 class with number 1 plates on their resume, AC is the only one still on the team that "developed" him (Anderson is arguable, since Bobby Hewitt doesn't own the team anymore). That's one guy out of 14, and you choose to hit on KTM for "buying talent"? Every team has done it/is doing it.

Any team that would interview a rider whos contract is up, who wants to pay a available rider that can represent their company well is not as smart per some people on here. Kawi should have never hired Tomac. Honda should never hired #94. KTM should have never hired Webb. Tampa Bay should never of hired Tom Brady. They should have just drafted a QB last year and developed him Smile

Ac went from Team Green, to PC, to Factory Kawi

So along similar lines.

Plessinger: cycle trader ams, Star ams, Star 250, factory Yamaha 450 and now Star 450

Sexton: FC ams, Geico 250, HRC 450

Marv sorta for KTM (MX2 GPs, to US 250s and now US 450s)

When Suzuki let DeCoster go in 1980, after he had made them a dominant force in the sport and had developed the RMs and had sold them thousands upon thousands of bikes, any illusions we had about loyalty in the sport were blown up into little tiny bits. Motocross has been a "land of plunderers and pirates" ever since - and it ever shall be.

And I'm cool with that.

So here is a question.
Why is it important to develop your own talent as a team?

What benefit do you get over just hiring the best rider you can afford?

I am curious to hear the opinions and learn something new.

The benefit is brand recognition and marketing. We associate amateurs with brands long before they are pro. Deegan-ktm, Ryder D - kawi, Jett Reynolds Kawi. Etc etc, the benefit for the manufacturer is regular joes see Ryder ripping on a Kawi and they associate Kawi with winning, by the time he goes pro he already has a huge following for himself and brought eyes to the brand

The negative of this is the sheer cost of supporting a massive amateur program and not knowing if the athlete will ever pan out.

Honda had the "Dream Team" in the 80's with no talent development whatsoever, as far as I know. They built the team buy throwing money at a group of the most talented riders they could BUY. They won a ton of championships, by making sure they had the best chance of any team to do so.

I realize money then isn't the same as the money now. Factory teams have dwindled from 4-6 riders down to maybe three at the general maximum.

I think it's great if a team can use riders that have come up in their support programs (a la Team Green, as an example...), but hiring the best riders a team can afford at least assures them that are getting the best shot at a championship possible. There is no guarantee that even the best amature rider will "grow up" to perform as a top level pro.

A 3 rider KTM US 450 Team?

I’m not seeing it. Actually, what I’m not seeing is where the money will come from. But, hey, I’ve been wrong before!

Didn't they offer a contract to Ferrandis?

We all know he signed with Star now, but if that's true he would have been the 3rd rider under the KTM tent seeing as Marv and Webb were already under contract.

Husky have 3 riders and 2 of them are in a contract year. Could easily move a 3rd bike under the KTM tent and go back to 2 with Husky. Husky was a 2 rider team for some time before adding a 3rd.

Who knows.

I know that Marv is having a rough year in SX so far, but I hope he stays at KTM for another year or two.

Cole Gress developed him, Roger was smart enough to sign him when he saw him testing for another team.

Dunge was going to be good no matter where he ended up.

From the Swapmoto Live podcast this week, Jeremy Martin back on bike, not returning to race any SX and staying down on 250 for 2022. With him not moving up to a 450, and AP getting much better on the blue pig, don't be so certain about KTM signing the #7.

Side-note: KTM did have a 3-rider 450 team in 2017 with Dungey, Marvin and Canard but it's hard to remember that because Trey barely raced for them.

There was no amateur system back then, so I’d say they developed O’mara, Hansen, Bailey, McGrath and I’d even say Stanton and possibly Dymond.

They took huge chances on all those guys.

Rumor is they’ve also offered Moosecan another year.
