Probably the worst thing ive ever done and it probably wont work but who cares, 90 minutes and 750 13mm screws in total.

Probably the most fun i can get for 18$ this winter atleast

We do that for the Hangover Scrambles on New Years at Washougal. I usually lose some screws off the back tire but I've never lost any knobbies.

Are those actual tire studs? I did that for years and actually worked pretty damn good. Replaced a few with cheap hardware store replicas and they were too soft.

They look like self-tapping, hex head sheet metal screws.

I did that to my old KX80 to ride on a frozen pond when I was a kid. The screws that came out made my airbox, mudflap, and fender look like a honey badger went at it.

I did that on my cr125 back in high school for frozen lake riding and it worked fine and didn’t loose many, if any screws.

Did you soak the tire overnight?

Always heard that the screwing was easier and more enjoyable If the item being screwed was soaking wet.

It will work great! Get new rubber in the Spring. Don't really need to do the center knob on the front. Only need one screw per knob in the back, so the knob does not break/crack as easily. Make sure your buddy behind you has good goggles and handguards.

We used to do that back in the day on our xr70 pit bikes for riding on frozen ponds. It worked great on small bikes. Was a ton of fun riding on the ice. Not sure how it will hold up on a more powerful bike but worth a shot. Have fun!

Ice riding is a blast and makes ya fast. I used sheet metal screws the 1st time like most. The screws from a cycle shop are much better. For grip and not flying out. Most bikes where 125,s, restored 91 cr250 pc pipe with answer silencer. Doing turn tracks on the fox river downtown Green Bay, herring the echo off the building was cool.

OK, school time.

Self tapping and self drilling are 2 different things.
A self tapping screw won't make its own hole, a self drilling screw will.

For a rubber tire, self tapping would be the go to screw.
For sheet metal, try the self drilling.

The final is. Consider the difference between "self tapping " and self drilling "

Just remember tap to thread, drill to make a hole.

Perfect day, it worked way better than i expected but i couldnt really keep up with the 450s with real studded tires, i think i lost 3 screws in total on the rear tire after a full day

I'm surprised you only lost three screws honestly. Homemade knobby ice tires (especially the rear) generally don't last long.

When I lived in Wisconsin years ago, all those guys would do the exact same thing and ride the frozen rivers for hours. Their tires were fine well after many rivers. No inner liners either.

Kold Kutters are hardened & mostly stay put depending on the type of tire they're in.
