Every time I see some post something like this, it makes me want to slap someone. Dungey was never a slow guy that worked his way up to being fast. He won his very first Supercross fresh out of the “B” class! Shimoda might might be a nice kid and a decent racer, but he’s no Ryan Dungey.
Or was Dungey just sand bagging, racing the B class as an amateur?

"Crazy Joe's" has a history as a fast nickname.

That was before he made the premier class, now he’s “The Maniac”

Nope. He only raced at the ranch a grand total of 4 years, and he won his one and only title there in the 125 12-15 Mod class in his final year there before turning pro. That is the complete opposite of sand bagging. RD just recognized a generational talent when he saw it and took a chance that paid off handsomely. No offense to Jo’s fans, but Dungey and Shimoda’s careers have nothing in common.

Hope he kills it in the main. It'd be nice to see him put a straight up pass on CC or one of those guys

Just sharing my perspective but you are right that if there is an overwhelming opinion and you disagree then the internet will hate you.

Joe rode a good race. Good on him

If he starts slicing through the pack we might just have to call him Jo "Katana" Shimoda.

Look, you clicked a Shimoda support thread with the intent of being a contrarian. You’re not a victim.

The fact he is from Japan is even more impressive, if you have been to Japan you will know, there isn’t a huge amount of tracks or racing scene. He must be the most successful Japanese rider ever.
He was damn exciting to watch last night!

Third last year and looks like third this year and only 18. I think the young man is doing just fine.

I think he's on his way to being the most successful Japanese rider ever, but for now, that distinction still belongs to 1978 125 World Champ Akira Watanabe. Jo's third* podium last night moved him into a solid second ahead of Akira Narita's one podium (P3 at Anaheim 1 in '05), though.

*I'm also counting his outdoor podium at Fox Raceway.

Fukudome had some good rides but didn't he only race the premier class? He doesn't have the win credentials but I always thought Fukudome was better or more impressive than Akira Narita. At least the few times I got to watch them ride.

To be honest, I'm not too familiar with Fukudome. According to The Vault, though, he only scored a total of 7 points over a 3 year period. The thing with Narita isn't so much what he did in the States/overseas, but how dominant he was in the Japanese Nationals. For what seemed like a 10 year period (probably an exaggeration), every time the next hotshot MX2 rider moved up, Narita found a way to go faster and win another MX1 c-ship.

The Vault – Yoshihida Fukudome

Honest question, does anyone know why we haven't seen more Japanese riders head over to the US or MXGP to try and make a name for themselves? I've always wondered why seeing as most of the manufacturers are from there.

Is the sport just not as big over in Japan? Is it the language barrier, funding, etc.

I know we have some guys here that live in Japan, so I'm hoping some of you have an idea as to why that is.

Well, considering how calculating and, patient Shimoda is, maybe I meant both. 😉

There are decent paying motorsports gigs (Super Formula, GT racing, Superbike & MX championships, etc.) domestically in Japan which don't require racers/riders to move abroad and learn a new language/culture. That alone dissuades most from pursuing something abroad. Only ones that are supported (by the OEMs/sponsorships, etc.) and have that curiosity/drive to succeed outside of Japan will proactively make the move. Those types are relatively few.

Quoting Akira Watanabe here from a Racer X interview a few yeas ago.

"Everybody asks this of me," he replies. "It's because the manufacturing companies in Japan use the Japanese riders as test riders. They can get money by being test riders, but only in the Japanese championship. They don't want to go overseas. And when they do, they are not used to it and they do not learn. So they come back to Japan because they can get money by getting a factory testing contract."

The sport is basically non-existent in Japan, which is odd because Japan is car-crazy, also bmx, skating and other extreme sports are huge too.

There isn’t much room for tracks in most of the country, the one track I went to was not that great. They have some local races outside the cities but the level is not that high. Making Shimoda’s level even more impressive to me.

What is the story behind this young bloke? As in, has he only come over to America in the last couple of years, or, has he been in the US for yonks, pursuing the whole "SX / MX dream"?

Just asking.

He seems like a nice young bloke, that's staying just a bit below ( well, as low as a PC Ride can ever be) the massive 'hype' of say, the Lawrence brothers. It may well help him have a long career, so long as he avoids the injury monster .

Talented, smooth, and pushing ever further up in the results. Seems a good progression. I wish him well.

PS - don't compare him with Iannone, guys - Andre's current situation, is not something anyone would aspire to.
