It's not only about the power of a bike. It's the capabilities of the bike paired with the tracks to suit the capabilities that has brought the speeds/motions/response times to the brink and have exceeded the human skeletal system. I know i make no sense to some folks but just look recently how many mx riders turned to off roaders. It's the impact and injuries period. A manageable and economical start is to replace the premier class with 250cc (2 or 4) engines and tiddler class with 150cc engines.

Look at AMA Pro Injuries? How many whiskey throttle injuries? I bet carburetor versus fuel injection that injection has a higher rate of injuries.

I like to carry my AR and my 9mm while I ride my 450. Fast, safe, AND legal.

Stay in Australia OP.

should have to have a AMA Pro MX or SX license to purchase a 450 in my opinion... a 350 should be max displacement for all amateurs... too many squirrely dudes out trying to hit the 100ft jumps and absolutely wrecking themselves because they dont have good enough technique and just pin it and hope it goes well..

I put my money where my mouth is, at 27 in shape, i sold my 450 and picked up a 250f. but if i had to do it again, i would go with a 350.. mainly because then i can take it to glamis and ride moto on one bike without worrying about blowing up my 250f at glamis.
So let me get this straight, I'm 61 years old, have been riding dirtbikes for 50 years and have managed to somehow not kill myself yet (knock on wood) but if you we're in the position to, you would make it a law that I can't go buy a 450 motocrosser because I never got a pro license ? At 27 years old you think you should have a say in what I spend my money on ? gtf outta here, guys like you are the problem with this whole country. I rarely get upset over message board nonsense but that is the stupidest shit I've ever heard. I'm out this just plain aggravating, out of all the pussified people in this country I figured dirt bike riders would "Get It" Wrong again..... sumdood out

When the best riders in the world tame their bikes down to make them more "manageable", what more proof do you need. I understand some folks don't want to be told what to do and the c class keyboard warriors that claim just don't twist the throttle as far seem to make sense to them, it doesn't make sense for the future in my opinion. I'm thinking long term viability for dirtbikes and places to ride them.

That's their problem. If you're not smart enough to ride within your limits, that's your own fault.

I was at riding on a "practice day" a while back. I was aware of a very fast young rider being behind me and I figured he'd find a way past me pretty quick. I was passing a slightly slower guy over the track's biggest tabletop (a 75 footer) when that crazy youngster sliced between the two of us doing a pancake scrub, He hit me midair with his rear tire and off I went, stunned at my bikes sudden change of direction and pitch, completely off the track and into the weeds. So then I waited. I followed him to his beat-up old truck and I told him that if I hadn't saved that landing I'd be living in his house and driving his parent's cars, because one of my very best friends is an incredibly successful personal injury attorney. He was scared of my anger toward him at first, but he collected himself, shrugged and said, "That's racing dude. Motocross is dangerous, that's why we do it." And I replied, "First off, we're not racing - this is PRACTICE day, dumbass. Secondly, we don't ride BECAUSE it's dangerous, we ride IN SPITE OF the danger. If you don't know the difference, you're an even bigger idiot than I thought." By now the whole pit area was watching the confrontation, and let there be no doubt, I was portraying that poor kid, vividly, as being an absolute moron. My belief is that my heated words to him that day ruined his chances of being seen as a hero by the other young riders, as he never came back to that track; and my own thoughts of it being stupid for me to give someone I don't even know an excellent chance of causing me great bodily harm eventually led me to buy my own private track, a place where you can only ride if your character and intentions have been thoroughly vetted.

And there, my friends, is the nub of it. We, THE ADULTS IN CHARGE, too often tell young racers that common sense is for pussies and thus it should not guide their thinking on the track, and then we, THE ADULTS IN CHARGE, build tracks with decidedly dangerous jumps that require the participants to possess more balls than brains, and then WE, THE ADULTS IN CHARGE, wonder why fewer and fewer young people want to take us up on our invitation to come on out, put on a helmet and some boots, and try to cheat death? Let me help out here: the reason they decline our invitation is likely because they see themselves as having better things to do, things that provide them an equal amount of fun with much, much, much, less danger.

I would happily race CRF50s around a vacant parking lot because I simply LOVE to race, period. My non-moto life has been an almost unbroken line of unexpected successes, so lucky me - racing-wise, I've got nothing to prove and no one I need to impress. Younger racers are often not this way. They seek the attention that comes with being an Alpha male, and in moto, sometimes the only thing required to accomplish that feat is an eager right wrist and runaway hormones. I'm not young. I'm 59 and I've grown wise over time. I know what needs to be done to fix things, My track is a blast to ride for anyone from novices to pros, it races like a dream, and the only injury in three years time has been one mildly broken thumb. Trouble is, Moto has absolutely no interest in listening to someone like me. I am totally worthless to them, an irrelevant dinosaur. Oh well, Moto - it's your loss. What I say to all who rIde my track is a mantra ALL of Moto should adopt: YOU DON'T GET FASTER IN PLASTER. It's so simple to understand - all it takes is some common sense.

And upwards of 90% of them are in gun free zones. Don't forget our 2A is for to protect our selves and loved ones, from enemies, foreign (Invaders) and domestic (tyranny's).

Anyone willing to give up freedoms, for a sense of safety, deserve neither.

Great idea. I really don't get why only Yamaha has this with todays tech, should be easy to do.
Kawi with the old couplers, why not develop an app?

It's the tracks, not the bikes, but everyone wants to be a hero, and sound tracks are boring to them.
Why do we need big jumps? For fans? Screw the fans.
We need racing.
Racing doesn't need big jumps, it needs racers.

I've been fed up for a while, and quit the industry in part because no one really cares about safety. It's all about how cool they look on Facebook.

You r right. Mentioning gun laws was unacceptable. I was on the turps and having worked with children i can be overprotective. Just sick of seeing them smeared on mx bikes. Adults can do what they like, my cr500 smeared me. Apologies accepted?

I just spent last season on a CR500 Hybrid Supermoto, as a 54 year old Vet.. when we got it, it was an unrideable peice of shit ,that was impossible to run decent laps on, and by the time me were done, i could run laptimes that were within 0.5 secs of our 2018 450 Husky which was a €20k bike. And we are competitive in our class , like within 1 sec of the fastest lap .
We sold it on to a guy who has had many CR500's and he said he wished he had this bike when it was first out there..

Sometimes less is more.

This topic got me thinking of the year 2007...I took my 15 year old son and his 04 YZ125 to his first track...which included a MX, SX, and a large kiddie track. We had the track to ourselves, my son started on the MX track...way too hard packed and rough, then to the perfectly prepped SX track...way too advanced for his level. While we took a break and had lunch, the owner stopped by on his tractor and told my son to help himself to the kiddie track. For two hours we both ripped his 125 around on the kiddo track and laughed and giggled the entire time. What started as an intimidating day turned into a day that is forever etched into our minds as one of the best damn times we ever had on a dirt bike. Yes, I agree that bikes are too powerful for the majority, but I personally believe that the tracks are way too extreme for the average person that just wants to have fun riding while thinking they're RC, McGrath, Stewart or Roger Decoster = me,lol. Or, maybe we should get a stuntman license before we set foot on the next SX style track. Just my 2 cents.

I know this post is not about firearms, but some Americans near religious fervour about firearms is a little bit disturbing!
Don't hate me for it, that's my opinion and many others share it, whether you like it or not.
And before you personally attack, I've hunted professionally in the past and currently use firearms in my line of work, but I still find the 'birth right' lust of guns totally weird.

And that's all I have to say about that.

The only thing we need is for the riders to do two things:
1) Use your head. Be smart and don't endanger other riders by cross jumping, jumping over/on someone, etc
2) Control that thing on the end of your right arm! Go only as fast as your capable of! Know your limits.

Hell, I hate to jump, and don't, yet I still broke my leg when I flipped over coming out of a corner. Not the bikes fault, mine for not controlling that thing on the end of my right arm.

250 f can clear 100ft jumps easily. , its ridiculous to say everyone would be fine on a 350 compared to a 450 . Most people would do the same lap time ,jump all the same stuff . 450 s are great . People just need to learn to stop reving the crap out of them . You can be smooth on one and be safer and go the same speed as a 250 . Your on the edge on a 250 the whole time imo . It s tge way you ride them is the thing

Slower tracks and smaller jumps may help. But you know, everyone pushes the limits even on pitbikes and can get hurt, maybe less severely i agree. Protections should also be mandatory.

The bikes aren't the problem, you just need to know your limits.

I know that a 450 is not the right bike for me so I don't ride one, but I know people who it is exactly the perfect bike for. If anything I thought my 350 was much more dangerous than my 450, the thing was insane.

Not sure what is more moronic, trying to ban 450s or Australians obsessing over guns laws in a country on the other side of the planet.

Well that's NOT THE MOTORCYCLES FAULT, talk to the parents. Just like guns, in the hands of the wrong people, or people who are uneducated to the risks, everything has risks, and can be deadly or cause severe injury. So some kids got mangled by bikes? Still seen more kids die in automobile accidents, cancer, the flu and any of the 500 billion ways a human can die. Shit I grew up skateboarding and riding Motocross, seen more severe injuries from skateboarding. Should we tame skateboarding?

And please don't use some random kids, being hurt by motorcycles, as your drive to becoming an SJW, hell bent on saving all the children! We've heard that before, way too much! Ohh Save the Kids!! No that's the PARENTS responsibility, not everyone else's in the sports. Its virtue signaling and when you do it, everyone, I mean every single one of us, know your a lying, double-standard hypocrite. But if by chance, you do feel that is your calling in life. Then start a nonprofit organization that helps kids learn safety and the basic technique to riding safely.

Otherwise seriously, STFU, you're not doing this sport any favors.

You really don't understand why we created the United States then. To get away from tyrannical dictators, who decide your life for you. And the best way to keep a government from becoming tyrannical? Arm every single damn citizen. If they don't care to protect themselves and loved ones, they deserve neither.

Why would you ever trust someone else (police/government) to protect or do, what you personally can and should do?

The last thing we need in this country is more nanny-type bullshit, telling us how to live our lives. No one has a gun put to their heads, forcing them to twist their right wrist and send it.

MX is one of the last facets of our society to feel free and to have the only limits be your own. Don’t fuck that up.

An increase of at least 100+ yards, bud. Reach out and touch someone. How far can reach out and touch something, 3"? Don't don't come to a gun fight, holding just your dick in your hands. You won't be able to use it afterwards. So yeah, it actually does.

Seriously, who rides dirt bikes and dislikes guns? The lack of testosterone in society today, is absolutely pathetic. Man up, and quit stubbing your vag on everything.

I personally have never ridden a bike that has to much power and I have never been hurt buy having too much power but I have been hurt many times not having enough power.

Mmmmmm I think that it does the opposite haha

Twice the displacement and virtually the same lap times kind of implies that a 250 is at the top of the bell curve and anything more is excessive.
There is more to dirt bikes than Supercross. Rarely ever are the 250s as fast outdoors when the track is tougher for the 450s, not to mention desert racing.
