Honestly I’m noticing we are all just stoked to finish the races. 1-2 hour motos are no joke. You’ll be proud just to finish whether it’s first or last. This weekend was a mud fest. People were dropping like flies I just kept pushing and didn’t know I could even take my body there. Very rewarding at the end even before I knew I got 1st.
Set your bike up correct for your weight and riding style get in the gym (I couldnt do these races with out being in the gym 2-4 times a week) and have fun! I’m meeting a lot of cool people!
2. Just have fun
3. If you do plan to lose weight, make sure you do your suspension to that target weight. Maybe even wait until you get to that target so you can better feel it as it should be.
4. Keep up with suspension settings as your weight fluctuates, which it likely will (no offense)
5. Have fun
6. Lastly, have fun

First race: Just take it easy, have fun, don't crash and finish. Get an idea of what it's
all about and gauge your speed and fitness. Don't put any pressure on yourself. Go from there.
Learn how to pace yourself for the entire race...a lot of amateur HS riders blow their wad in the first 20-30 mins then hit the wall.
Find the smooth lines and consistent lines.
Use your size to punt those small guys out the main line when needed
Intermittent fasting 16/8 and a Keto diet will shed pounds faster than anything.
Remember, breakfast is for fat people. If you don't believe me go to any Denny's or IHOP at 10 AM...

If you want to be ultra competitive in off-road your best bet is to get to the mx track every other practice session and focus on sprints and raw speed when you're there. Skills learned on the mx track transfer over to off-road very well. The same cannot be said about offroad skills transferring over to the mx track. Of course, you have to be able to last the entire race too, so practice endurance. But having the ability to get yourself to the front and putting enough time between you and the next rider so that they can't see you is pivotal in doing well in offroad races.
In short, if you hear someone rolling up on you faster than you can think, don't ride erratic and try and do look for an opening to move to one side of the track. You don't even have to stop, just give a little room on one side and maybe point or lift a hand as to which side you would prefer they pass you on. They will appreciate it and you will be less likely to find yourself tasting tree bark when a super fast mini rider uses up every inch of trail in that split second opening they had to make the pass.
I made it about 1/4 lap into the race and was ready to quit, but after spending close to $120 to sign up after ama membership, transponder, day pass for the district, and entry fee, I opted to push through the pain and go as long as I could. I was on the track for 2 hours and 40 minutes and it was some of the most fun I have had on a bike and sparked a fire to get back into shape.
Go for it and just have fun over all other things. Don’t worry about being competitive yet. Just race yourself, ride at your comfort level, and be mindful of faster riders. Take the time to note where you had troubles and try to do better the next lap around. Make sure your bike is tight and well maintained before entering a race also. There is nothing worse than showing up paying race fees and breaking down after a short time!
Best of luck, you will have a blast!
