more than doubled in price in addition to inflation costs.

in 2019 dollars that would be $6,656.96
2019 CRF450 (closest model equivalent) is $9299 (yes, i undestand we are talking about a fuel injected bike blah blah blah, but that is our modern equivalent/what i can buy at a dealer to go race/ride today)
thats a 39% increase over inflation. 60's are 56% over inflation.
point being, the minis have almost doubled in increase compared to the big bikes. thats less than ideal. i'm a dad with two 50's btw.
I can see why an 85 is much cheaper with a 2-stroke engine and older suspension tech, but 250-450 price difference is odd. Even looking at those 1988 prices there is $500-600 difference between a 125 and 250. It's just what we are willing to pay I guess.
If making my kids happy, and trying to be smart with my money is white trash.... What does the opposite make you? Idk, but if you have kids I feel sorry for them.
I always try to by a couple years old when I can vehicles or toys and let the original owner take the brunt of the depreciation though. Or buy old and fix her up and sell for more than purchased hope to do that with my current Kx250f got a pretty good deal think I can ride it for a few seasons and sell for same if not more than purchased for.
He really was too big for that bike but they aren't "moto people" and don't have much spare money so one day his mom calls and says she got a good deal on a KX 65($800) but he can't touch the ground. I like the kid and he has good skills for no real experience so we stuffed the airbox with old t-shirts and I put 2" spacers in his forks and shock and cut the springs and now he rips around his yard almost every night too.

A KTM 65 retail at $4999, Ktm 50 $4299 and a KTM 50 mini $3799. A pw50 sells for $1499 and has barely changed in 30 years.
As a mini dad and a rider it's hard not getting caught up buying your kid the coolest shit. A few weeks ago I almost purchased my boy a ktm 50 mini because I thought he would go faster, but after talking with some friends I decided to race our PW into the ground and try to bypass the bigger 50s. Because he was born in October we will have 3 full seasons on the PW.
But I applaud the OP for getting his kids riding. We need more people to do that.
My son begs every day to ride his Crf50....He loves it. I bought it without a motor...and found a crf70 that had a crf 50 motor in it-weird how that all came together. I bought them both for $500...pulled the 50 motor in the 50...bought a new carb, and some new eletrical stuff...and i'm into this little 50 about $800. And its not pretty, but if you ask my son, it had just as well be a Factory CRf450R. He loves it that much. Sure I could have spent $4K on a race bike...but he doesn't need a race bike...yet.
Thanks for sharing your idea, I'm going to keep it in mind for my kid.
