This is what my dad did Laughing

Started looking when i was 9, never could find a decent used XR80 for me. One day he's poking around in the newspaper and finds the bike he was looking for that was a steal. Calls the guy, he knocks even more off and we go buy it.

Come home, unload the bike in the garage and headed straight to the Honda dealer to buy me a new bike before she found out.

Dad decided to have this conversation once instead of twice.

Your wife can choose one of two options:

#1: Remain married, and let the kids ride.
#2: Be divorced, and have kids who ride when they visit dad.

Cool

The way I did it when my two oldest were 5 and 4, I told them in front of my wife that I would buy them a dirt bike if they learned how to ride a bike without training wheels. I was irritated that they wouldn't even try a bike without the training wheels, so I said it in the heat of the moment one day. If looks could kill from my wife I wouldn't be here right now. She was mad I promised the kids something without consulting her expert opinion, but would not go against my promise to the kids. Long story short they had their first dirt bike a week later. She would have had to make a promise breaker of me to my kids and that wasn't the route she would take. I'm still alive and still married. Good Luck!
Similar thing with me. We were at a shop and I was buying 2 stroke oil. He thought we were getting him a motorcycle. I told him no (he was 3) and if he could ride without training wheels I would get him one. Got home and he demanded his trading wheels off his bike. 10 minutes later he's riding his bike around without training wheels. I held off for 3 months till he was 4 but here came a pw50 for his birthday.

-general talk-

I’ve spent the last 12 months totally engrained into the moto dad thing, it’s not easy, it’s full commitment. I’d buy them both 50cc ktm bikes, practice fundamentals, and only “fun”damentals, or they will be eating shit on the reg and building bad habits, let them have fun half of the time, but it’s all about fundamentals. From my experience and being hyper critical, most of the injury’s to kids stem from poor fundamentals and/or the kid/parent allowing/forcing the kid to ride outside the kids talent level, it’s really that simple. Currently, organized training classes with coaches has been the most beneficial use of our time, kids generally don’t listen to parents, get over it, it’s not you, these kids have to listen to us all day everyday... proper training classes make it more enjoyable to both kid and parent.

Actions turn into habits, habits make your character... this is why you don’t see the pros changing their character on a bike, their bad and good choices on a bike got built at an early age, basic human physiology bro

You had to ask your wife's permission to let you get a bike? You should ask for your balls back first.

Cool
your kids "visit" you when you're divorced?
That's sad.

The OP, in soliciting advice from an MX chat room, is simply looking for affirmation of a preconceived perspective. Venture beyond the realms of a pro-moto forum and the responses would differ greatly.

They're 5. Give it time. Are the twins really grabbing at dad's pant legs begging for bikes? Life will be less stressful if you let their desire to ride grow naturally. A 5 year old cannot make a rational decision, so you have to make it for them.

Pay no mind to all these shit talkers. My boy just turned 4 in November and got his first PW50. The kid has been asking for a dirt bike since he was about 2 1/2. I did the same thing others in here did and told him that as soon as he could ride a bike without training wheels he might get one, and he did. My wife never thought twice about it because I think she could see how much he truly wanted the thing. Let the kids sell their mom on it, if she can see how badly they want to do it, chances are the decision will make itself. Maybe I'm just lucky to have a wife that doesn't mind sitting on the back of the truck watching us fall over and get back up again all afternoon.

Start a trial separation in which you get the kids over the weekend.

Buy a bike for your wife and teach her to ride. If all goes well she will understand that it's not really that dangerous, quite fun, and actually good family time. That being said, I'm talking out of my ass because we got this discussion out of the way before kiddos.

You have to get the kids to love it and then they will guilt her to death. You won't have to do a thing. Just have them bugging her and then tell her she's holding them back from something they really want to do and preventing an opportunity for them to bond with their father (like you said, it's all out war right?).

Do they have striders? Are they riding bicycles? What kind of mother wouldn't allow her kids to ride bicycles? Get them into BMX then switch em over. Do any of the neighbors kids have Razors? All the kids on my street have 'em. I mean they're Walmart toys. How can kids get hurt on Walmart toys?

Don't just go head to head with her and make it an ultimatum. The first time they get hurt, your relationship will suffer and she'll have the upperhand.

This won't work because most tracks require a waiver requiring her sign off. If they're separated then she definitely ain't going to let it happen.

We started in bmx,it helped a lot when we transitioned to dirt bikes. It also a good judge of how they react when they hit the ground hard for the first time.lol

I am a product of a mama that said "NO" when dad was going to get me a broke down old 90cc Bridgestone. 52 years later I don't do anything that doesn't have a dirt bike involved, kids do the same. the wife, she yells at me if I don't go ride/race.

so this could be used as a learning tool, "NO" now means more determination for a lifetime.

Smile

but did like the purse/balls comment, and permission/forgiveness.

Just get the couch ready and sleep on it with out saying a word, when asked "why" just say " i needed to see what i am in for".............................. good luck.

Good luck dude! My wife knew she married into moto and no matter what knew it would be a family thing, but she was also into it a little bit before me.
This is exactly what I did coupled with a fifth wheel trailer and my family and many amazing weekends made at the tracks and in the California desert Although my wife and daughter do not ride anymore my youngest son who is 22 and I still enjoy the sport that I grew up with

Welp, you can come in hot like some of these real men are telling you, but it sounds like you'll be following up this post with "Does anyone know a good divorce lawyer?" I can relate. When my wife was on leave with our 3rd kid, I broke both my wrists. When she was on leave with our 4th, broken shoulder. Still, I bought the girls a quad and my son an xr50. I think you've got the right mindset. You can't be wide open, planning this illustrious racing career. Trail bikes are a good way to ease into all of this. If it turns into racing, great. If not, you're accomplishing the ultimate goal. Which is riding motorcycles with your children.

I know you're joking, but if any women threw a big enough fit about buying dirt bikes for the kids that the word "divorce" came out of her mouth...I'd laugh and tell her to pick her shit up in garbage bags on the lawn.
Yea, but that is a HUGE red flag, right? Like OP most likely rides - how can she support her husband's riding but not kids? My wife knew from the day I met her that we rode moto, and she knew that if we had kids they would be on bikes as young as possible. How could this conversation NOT come up in the past? You both just shrugged it off? One of my "pre-requites" for my girlfriend was that she didn't care when we went to ride and she supported the financial and danger aspect of the sport. I'm 30 now and ride more than ever, and she supports it more than ever. Just seems odd that this could ever be a relationship/issue between someone who moto's and their wife.

Some good input here fellows - some of it made me laugh out loud and the "remove your balls from her purse" and "cowering husbands" comments made me hang my head in shame.

What can I say, she's a strong-willed woman who has done well in oil & gas; a very old-boy, old-school, misogynistic industry and she doesn't take sh*t from anyone, least of all me. I definitely wouldn't say I chose poorly though, as a good portion of the time I like her "get 'er done" and take no shi*t attitude and the 2nd income equal to or more than mine is a definite nice to have. If I wanted a blindly obedient, subservient partner I'd have married one; unfortunately this is one of the infrequent times I wish I had.

If it comes down to it I will just buy 2 bikes and safety gear and say "f**k it, this is what we're doing" and face the consequences but as an enlightened few of you pointed out it'll be a lot better if I can get her at least 1/2-assed on board so I don't have to hear complaining or "I told you so" for the rest of my life.

I need to figure out how this is going to look too, as it will be a few years before the kids can ride the mini track unsupervised and I don't want to end up sitting by a fence watching them go around in circles and not being able to ride on my own.

I will let you know how it goes.

I grew up riding and racing and thought the same as you about standing on the fence watching. For me I had/have at least as much enjoyment watching them as I do riding myself. I do get to chase my oldest around the big track now which is an absolute blast, but standing around watching my other 2 little ones is just as much fun. Trust me youll enjoy it in a different way, then later in life youll get a chance to ride WITH them. I also got an xr100 and will chase them around the pee wee track. I can pressure them in corners, steal their line etc and they feel comfortable doing it with me. That right there I feel helped my oldest son transition into racing other kids really well. My daughter is 5 and she rides around the pits literally laughing and singing in her helmet. The cutest thing Ive ever seen!
