When will the Alta...

OH GAWD. Stop shoving this electric shit down our throats. This sport was made on mixin gas and kickin ass.

I do NOT like working on my bikes...least favorite part of riding (everything from air filters and oil changes...to clutches and top ends). I pay someone to do everything but the preventative maintenance...

As soon as the e-bikes, performance wise are on par-or better-than the ICE bikes (and it sounds like maybe they are there with the alta) and have a battery that can last 4 hours in the desert and cover 100+ miles, with no performance loss (or an economically option to buy additional batteries..and that can be changed in a few minutes)...I'll probably buy one.

With that said...Alta has some work to do on the aesthetics...its ugly (hopefully the jap brands will get on board, and roll out a decent looking bike...And I have serious issues with the lack of sound (though I know that's a net positive, overall, I'll just miss the sound).

Alta needs to make a mini bike and market it to kids. It needs to be the same price if not less than current 85s. They also need to make a beginner/economy version with less expensive components similar to how OSET does theirs.

I’m not interested in an electric motocross bike for myself, especially at the price they’re marked at, but my boys are and I know people would be more inclined to buy their little kids electric bikes thinking it’d be easy to operate and maintain.

Oh and also, Alta needs to completely overhaul the look of their bike. It looks horrendous.

These guys saying they hate working on their bikes, I’m curious why? Is it laziness? Lack of tools? Never been properly shown? Between 2 bikes and my Jeep I’ve always got an excuse to be in the garage. I watch zero television and almost never come home and chill on the couch. I work full time and I do the army Reserve thing, but I find the time to build shit. Idk. Regardless that I find it fun. I feel like it’s part of the responsibility of the hobby. I guess I’m weird

Completely agree. It seems there are more and more who ride and dont even seem to own a wrench. Thats why the car scene is dying . people are concerned with the damn infotainments than the performance!

One of the most fun things on Moto bike is tinkering with the bike , making thinks better and then go to the track and feel the difference . Also working on the bike and learning what is better for the bike and feel good about it. With Alta ,when you come home from track you just hose it of and put it in the garage. I think u missing the real Moto life. Also I am not definitely in to the WP suspension on the Alta. And yes I did ride one before. People couriers starts with working on dirt bikes and then turns in to the bigger thinks.

I have the tools (from when I couldn't afford to pay someone to do it...and for the occasional times I can't leave my bike at the shop for several days and have to get something done myself), I have the time, etc...the fact of the matter is that I just don't enjoy it.

I'm not a "tinkerer"...I don't like home improvement projects, I don't like working on my car, I don't like building things. I do them all, when I need to, but I just don't like it. And so I pay someone else.

Nothing more to it than that.

I like tinkering and doing motors and shit. I hate stupid crap like the actual amount of money it costs to rebuild a motor. And stupid crap like air filters and oil changes or lubing the chain.

Agree 100%. Some of my greatest memories are working in the garage with my dad and trying to rebuild a motor overnight before the race in the morning. Working on your motorcycle provides you with mechanical skills and gives you the confidence and knowledge to tackle other projects around the house (car, water heater, etc.) I get where people are touting the "no maintenance" aspect, but as others have said that's 1/2 the battle and 1/2 the fun of owning a dirt bike. Tinkering on your bike gives you a reason to be in the garage (with your TV, Fridge, Stereo) and escape everyday life. Instead of thinking as working on your bike as time spent away from your family think about it as an opportunity to spend time with your family and teach life lessons (hard work, maintenance, finances, relate it to school like math, physics, science.)

Sure, owning an Alta will likely make you faster on the track; but where is the fun if it takes no skill, just twist the throttle and hold on. To me that changes the whole sport. And ya they'll eliminate sound pollution, but the same people protesting noise will find another way to shut you down (dust, rubber tires, endangering children, etc); people like that, want to control your fun, and I don't buy the argument that eliminate noise and enter utopia.

Sorry for the long morning rant, I think innovation is great, and believe there is a place for the Alta within the sports sector, I just don't think they the greatest thing since slice bread, I'll stick to my two-stroke and garage evenings.
I love working in the garage,it's therapy for me. I own a business, work about 60 hours a week there, have some rental properties and do some work when needed. Which doesn't leave a lot of time for riding and maintenance . My wife is very supportive of my riding and the stable of bikes I own and maintain. So an Alta would be great maintenance wise, but
I rode one and it was a blast! I want one and not having to worry about doing as much maintenance is fine I have plenty to do.
As far as it takes no skill to ride one, really? Tell that to Mr Hill when he was quite competitive on one at Straight rhythm against ice bikes.Yeah he just sat on it and twisted the throttle. smh.

It’s both cool and eh. The advancements are awesome, as are the possibilities of the bike. That being said, I really like the sound and feel of an engine under me, especially the sound of a two stroke.

I will say as much as 4 strokes took rider skill away with gear selection, power delivery, traction, all being so much easier than 2 strokes. The alta is taking that a step even further.

Yes theres still skill, fitness, line choice etc, but not needing to shift, clutch control etc is still a lot taken away

Same goes for advancements every year though. Selectable mapping, launch control, different mapping per gear, traction control, all these things make it easier to go faster and less work.

Totally removing shifting and clutch is a massive step though. I cant say its not fun and not bad ass but just some things i think of.

It's just not fun. I know how to do it it just takes time away from things I'd rather be doing. It's not really a lack of time. If you enjoy it then that's great, but it means nothing good or bad either way.

I've got over a dozen ICE bike to work on now. I don't need another. The Alta still has suspension, wheels, chain and such to maintain. That's enough for me.

Im looking foward to getting an Alta someday.
I like the mininal maintenance idea...
I like the no clutch , no gears idea....coild gelp me to concentrate more on corner speed and body pisition
I think the no noise idea is definitely a game changer.

Im not sure when Ill get a cgance to ride one...have been in touch with a guy in Australia who was supposed to be importing them...he was gonna run a demo day at my local track but hes deleted hus Facebook page and I haven't heard from him...I guess his plan fell through..

I am worried thag once I ride one, I wont want my gas bijjes anymore..I doubt it, but I seevthat its happened to others..

I think it will be years yet till a top level pro is racing one, mainly because I think it will be years before the AMA decides what to do with them.

I'm a mechanic and I hate working on my bike. I want to ride it, not work on it for free. If I have the free time, I would 100% choose riding over working.

You're not weird, you're just you. Some people do not like working on their own stuff. It's not an ability thing. I know for me, I love riding, but working on my dirtbike, RZR, vehicles, etc are a chore. I don't want to have to do something I don't enjoy, there isn't enough time in the day to waste my time on that. I would rather grab the mtb and go riding than change oil or air filter in my dirtbike. I only do that the night before a ride.

If you love tinkering or working on vehicles it's hard to understand why people don't. It doesn't mean we are lazy or don't know what we're doing. It just means we don't like doing it.

People can be different. Unless you're on Vital. Then you need to love 2 strokes, hate 4 strokes, hate Altas, and comment on every Nicco Izzi thread.

Back to the original post I don’t think Alta has deep enough pockets to put a top rider in professional supercross I would love to see them pick up Chad Reed.
After riding and racing an MXR I don’t think it would move you up or down any places you be in the same place where you are on a ICE bike.
The hard part of riding a Alta is learning the new techniques for an electric motorcycle.
The biggest complaint I am receiving now is the fact that there was no sound. Which is something you have to be aware of when out practicing and or racing. Keeps you on your toes.
The Alta is not a bike for everyone if you’re someone who likes to pounds laps (OR ANYONE THAT RACES IN MY CLASS) a gas bike would be better for you.
All I can say is after 49 years of racing MX the Alta new technology has brought the fun back into riding. Be safe and don’t be startled when and Alta goes by you.

The AMA is allowing electric bikes in amateur racing this year in the Vet classes and 450 classes. Not sure when they will be legal for pro racing. The foot is in the door...

You and me brother. I think it's the dumdest shit to come down the pike in quite awhile.

You all can race your kiddie power wheels and think your bad ass but some of us know better. Also, some of us couldn't wait to grow up to be men and ride real bikes that shifted.

No man would ever be caught on an "automatic" bike. Well at least that's how it used to be.

It'll turn out to be an even bigger debacle than the stupity of four strokes.

I don't get it and l never will.

There's an Alta craze? Hm. Are you sure you aren't manufacturing it in your mind because you don't like it and any little thing seems like a big thing? Because the latter seems way more likely than an Alta craze. I mean, what have the sold, like a thousand?

I think Alta will do ok. Lots of emasculated guys on here that don’t like working on icky bikes or getting their hands dirty. As long as there are plenty of girly men Alta will be ok

Everyone has different hobbies/passions.

I used to enjoy tinkering more than i do now. I don't mind doing my oil changes, air filters, washing, chain lube, etc.

Saying that, I hate working on the house (outside of mowing, can't believe i enjoy that..sucked as a child. I'm guessing the difference is i can drink beer while i do it Laughing ), working on my daily driver, and not overly exciting when i have to tear my main dirt bike apart just so i can ride on a quickly approaching date.

I want to work on something that doesn't have to be fixed on a certain time line and i can work on it as i want to, not when i have to. We picked up a 83 YZ125 in February as a project. Slowly getting it back together. I actually enjoy working on it, as we have parts or something to do on it.

I had built a FJ40 into a rock crawler a while back, that 100% burnt me out on the hobby of tinkering. Spent 6 years of constantly screwing with it, driving, breaking, fixing, repeating. Just recently got interested in tinkering on projects again.

Yeah, did you see how many times "I" was in there? Most folks have no understanding whatsoever for lives that aren't exactly like their own.

These two MX legends got an opportunity to ride an Alta at the AHRMA National in Houston last year. In their day they rode the best motocross bikes available in the world. Always riding the cutting edge of technology. They have also ridden today's most current bikes. After riding the Alta both of them were blown away. Wise only rode the parade lap. Stackable rode in a practice session. When he came in from his practice session, he asked if he could ride it in the next session. Both of them came off the bike with a huge smile. Isn't that the reason we ride?
