Took my bike to the dealer and KTM says they will replace the frame. Bad news is the frame is on back order, I'll keep this thread updated!

Wait, what gave it away? I hope the pictures I posted of my new KTM weren't too obvious. Also, if I am not mistaken, this is a KTM specific thread. I might be safe to assume that most that are contributing are, too, KTMs fans. Doesnt mean I wouldnt ride another brand tho.

Since I have a 2016 KTM I wanted to dig into this subject a bit more and reached out to KTM NA. To make a long story short, while they are aware of some frames failing it is not to the level that would warrant a recall.

While digging through the fiche, I noticed different part numbers for the 16 and 17 frames, so asked about that. The client support guy wasn't able to find any information about structural differences, but did mention he would try to get an answer from Austria.

Here is the list of problems I have seen with the new KTM’s.

2017 SX/XC 250 or 300 engine cases breaking because of Kickstarter idler gear.
2016 to 2018 Sxf 250 tranny failures.
2009 to 2018 KTM SX 65 powervalve breaking.
2016 to 2018 KTM Sx 125/150 frame breaking at the upper engine mount.
All the wheels on the big bikes are not true EXCEL’s and spokes are troublesome.
All the bikes seem to have someone that has broken the frame. Light weight = not as strong!
Foot peg springs and brake spring that break on every bike.
Plastic rear shock collar on big bikes!!

OP here - my buddy has a new frame coming (unsure who will build it or what part number it is) from Austria. KTM is providing the frame no cost.

He also picked up a new 2019 350SXF yesterday so he's not sidelined. Smile

114 hrs on a ‘16 450. 6 other buddies with them. All good. Wut the F$&@ are guys doing? Seriously! Maybe loose steering stems puting additional slam forces in that area? Many guys don’t know proper procedures for tightening stem (different than jap).
The build quality is amazing to me and I’ve had all jap brands except Kaw. The component material quality of all the components is space age, can’t get anything to wear out except drive pieces. Weak point IMO is wiring protection.

Build quality is slipping talk to any wheel builder and they will tell you the rims, spokes and hub alone are junk. I feel like if I am going to pay a premium price I want a premium product. Also great that KTM is covering the frame and other problems but trust me the dealer is probably bummed as they get charged for the parts but KTM pays them back when they feel like it!

I had a bad 16 450sxf. Fuel line, condenser, relay arm bearing, and front wheel all went out. It felt ragged out at 35 hours and the suspension was terrible so I sold it. From talking to people who’ve had a 16 they also said they’re terrible compared to the 17/18 even though on paper they don’t seem much different besides the fork. I guess it’s comes down to the rider. What’s good for a C rider may be terrible for a A rider.

Good point. But there’s not a “frame issue”. For the few pics posted, was it a lemon, machine being ridden beyond design limits, bike maintained poorly, etc.? This isn’t the old days. There aren’t junk bikes nowadays from any major brand. When I see a cracked Yamaha frame I don’t point to it and say “aha, there’s an issue.”
What’s funny is if there is an issue with bikes and the dealer does a recall, it’s all cool and totally fine. 4th or 5th gear recall on the ‘15 Honda CRF’s for example.
When does something become an issue? 1 out of a 100? Less? More?

They are machines designed by humans, they will never be perfect.... We are enjoying our new KTM FE but I think we will probably go back blue next year... Probably going back to Yamaha even after I spent THOUSANDS of dollars chasing the TPS problem on the 15 250fs. They knew it was a problem or they would not have discontinued the part and made a new one. There are dozens of reports of the bikes quitting at the wrong times on the track. Ours shut off in mid air on my son. They didn't even make a bulletin!! I think that problem was more wide spread than these cracking KTM frames... How about the new 18 Honda 250f clutch problems?

I realize it is a machine and shit happens....

Haha I just may have a little more info in all these problems as I worked at a KTM dealership. I have seen and handled all the issues above many times. I am posting this stuff to info people that what KTM is sell you at a premium price is not so premium. Yes all brands have issue but at this moment in time almost every model in the the KTM line up has a issue as I listed above. Also do you all really think that since KTM has partnered with Bajaj and now CF moto that the quality has not changed? Go to your local shop and ask were most of the street models are made!
