does anyone find it odd that there seems to be a lot of rust on the inside? I know raw steel will rust super fast but maybe it had something to do with it

FWIW he owns a big time painting shop that does big rigs, dozers, tractors and stuff. Blasts stuff clean, welds, powder coats and paints. So he knows metals and stress.

He bought this one new, had it apart less than a month ago after a big race weekend and saw no sign of issues. Dries it with an airgun after washing and dries that area in particular as there is some venting there for moisture control internally. But I think I see corrosion, and not enough damn material for such a critical junction. Guess I know now why KTMs are 15 lb lighter than everything else. SMH.
That frame appears to be a bit too thin for my liking. Been saying for years that KTM sacraficed quality for weight, but what the hell do I know.

Meh I don't know, clocked almost 200 hours on my KTM 450. Did I have problems? Sure as hell did but nothing major enough to steer me away from the Austrian bikes, I did end buying a Yamaha 450 2018 but that was just me wanting something new and different.

None. In fact it is a better bike at 30 hrs than it was new. You can check out my setup in the yz forum at TT.

why does KTM have the most defensive fanbase?
The more you pay for your bike, the less you want to hear about its weaknesses.

Not that it really matters - but did this particular incident happen at Hangtown? I just saw something pop up on my Instagram feed about this bike but it could be a repost. Glad to hear dude got off easy considering his bike is in 2 pieces. #crackiswhack

Homemade CR500AF conversion + Apex Moto Park + Scott Elderfield = Broken Frame

He was lucky to walk away from what I can remember.

I recommend that anyone with a 16-16.5 break out the magnifying glass and take a really close look.
Mine is cracked on both sides and most of the way underneath.

I eagerly await the day that I become such a talented and competent engineer that I can assess, with any realistic degree of accuracy, whether or not something is of adequate strength just by looking at it.

If you can't, you're not a very good engineer

We defend them because when there is a problem they take care of us. Japanese sell you a bike and say good luck. KTM says yeah shouldn't happen and takes care of it.

I have an 18 Husky FC350, this thread has been getting me a bit worried and apprehensive.

don't have to be an engineer, just experience with steel japanese bikes from the 90s and a little common sense.

You know the routine , its the tool makers job to make the engineer look like he knows what he's talking about.

What am I doing wasting time and money studying engineering when I could just become a spray painter and learn all about "metals and stresses".
