As already stated try racing RC offroad. Big jumps, esp with the 1/8th scale stuff. 1/8 is both nitro (2t) and electric. 1/8th scale can reach 40MPH on the track. As many set up changes as a real offroad buggy or truck. My favorite is 1/10th 2wd, handles more like bike/quad than the 1/8th stuff does.
2 years ago I lost 100% health insurance to a screwed up ACA plan that the HR departments can not even answer all the questions. Bought a house, found the love of my life and at 43 years old she (30) gave me a son and she came with a daughter. So I looked at the risks vs what I could lose and hung up MX. I have raced RC offroad off and on since 1986 when injured and could not ride (5 to 05 due to broken back), so it was not new to me.

Glad your Dr gave you away to ride without the high risk.

Need some honest knowledge. Does anyone ride / race on blood thinner? Last year I developed clots in my left leg and was on Xarelto for 6 months. Was instructed no riding/mountain biking/surfing or generally anything fun. Blood work was done after 6 months and A clean bill of health was given. Now 4 months later they are in my right leg and lung. Now I'm not asking for diagnostics or sympathy, but I've come to the conclusion I'll be on this crap the rest of my life. I wear top end equipment and I know my limits, but I'll be damned if I'm sitting on my ass the rest of my life. So the question is, anybody out there ride on blood thinners? Thanks boys in advance for any input.

I can't express this strongly enough. This is a question for your doctor, not "medical experts" here.

A friend of mine who was a world-class mountain bike racer had a heart valve replacement (with a mechanical valve), and had to run blood thinners afterwards. The sanctioning bodies wouldn't allow him to race because they feared that if he had a crash, he would bleed out before medical help could reach him.

It bugged him enough that he went back, had the surgery redone with a natural valve, and he came back to race a few more years.

I understand the desire to ride, and the reluctance to change your lifestyle. But if you have an issue with an injury at a track, you're going to also affect your friends, family, medical first responders, the track, etc.

After my first heart failure and 1.5 years later after my open heart surgery I was riding 30 minute motos after 3 months but I was never on blood thinners. In December I had a 3rd heart failure and now I'm on blood thinners. They told me, don't do any kind of contact sports that you could break a bone because you will bleed to death. The reason for the thinners is because the heart is only at 25% ejection fraction right now and there is a risk of the blood swirling in the heart, creating a blood clot and stroke. They want the heart function to be at least 40% to get off.

Man if I just bump something I get a big bruise now.

I don't even ride my electric skateboard right now (FIIK board)

No, I actually never was hospitalized until I got the call and came in for the swap. The doc said that it was a paradox that I was functioning as well as I was given the damage to the heart (viral cause). I was also fortunate to have an a more common blood type to match than some, and was in a smaller regional center (as opposed to Stanford or UCSF in NorCal) and went on the list in position 1, so I only waited five months. My main problem pre transplant once into treatment was that they kept my blood pressure pretty low (90/60) to unload the heart, which will slow you down a bit.

I 100% agree with everyone that said absolutely not, in 2008 I had to go on them for roughly 5 years. I sold my Yz250 and got into something else. Couple years ago I was able to come off of them, but because of my heart condition every now and then I have to go back on for a few weeks then off again. I don't ride at all when I'm on them.

I'm 35, have atrial fibrillation I've had 5 catheter ablations, been electrically cardioverted over 20 times and on June 29th I just had a pacemaker put in. So I'm currently off the bike for another 4 weeks, some tell me not to race at all anymore but my doctor and I make that decision and he said I will be ok to get back on the bike after 6 weeks.

If you develop a relationship with your doctor like I have over the last 15 years or so, they begin to trust you and listen to your opinions because they know that you are educated on the matter. Like my doctor trusts me that I know if I go into A-Fib for more than 48 hours straight I know that i need to start back on my Xarelto, and once I convert I know I need to take it for at least another week or two to make sure that any clots that may have formed are gone. He trusts me to make these calls because I am always very honest with him.

Listen to your doctor, I've been in your position when I was in my twenties and I was looking for any way to be able to ride still but it's not worth it man.

Wow. Considering all you were facing, you had smooth sailing. Keeping that BP down can make you feel weird. You really had a good outcome. Glad it all worked out.

I broke my back in 1993 while practicing and unfortunately suffered a DVT that didnt become apparent until around a month after surgery when I was trying to walk with a walker. Different theories from the docs on how I got it but I had to go on thinners. Have tried to go off them many times and done an unreal amount of tests but because of the place of the clot and damage done to the valves, under certain circumstances the clot would return so I will remain on the thinners the rest of my life or until some more medical advances are made in vascular repair.

I returned to racing for many years after starting thinners and suffered many crashes and other injuries while on them. Now I'm not saying it is the right thing to do but I am doing what I want and what keeps me sane because doing what the docs originally told me would have had me putting most sports in the closet, which is just not me. I dont ride the dirt bike much anymore because the length of the rods and fusing of my spine only left me with a couple of functioning lumbar discs and they were taking a pretty good beating. I ride my road bike and MTB tons and participate in lots of so called high risk sports.
My advice would be to do what you want within your risk comfort zone, everyone is different. My participation in those adrenaline sports is what makes me,me, but to each their own!

I did research on different thinners and chose to stay on Coumadin / Warfarin because the effects are reversible if I do suffer a bleed so that may help me. You just never know in life,I could quit all high risk sports yet get smacked by a car walking the crosswalk to get a coffee at no fault of mine.

Shit. I'm at the Cleveland Clinic now about to have surgery on three clots that developed in my stomach. They have been there for years apparently and I did one of the biggest marathon mountain bike races in the world last year.

I've been wondering if I'll be able to race mountain bikes again after next week.
kinda old thread but wanted to see if you ever got to ride again

I've been on Xarelto, and now Eliquis instead, for 6 years. I'm back to riding/racing regularly. I just don't take the meds about 12 hours before I ride, to limit its effectiveness. (Eliquis is a twice-daily prescription.) My doctor said it should be fine. If I crash and have massive internal bleeding in the middle of the desert - even if I'm not on meds - it's a pretty sketchy situation.

I am on Plavix which is a form of a blood thinner. It makes the platelets less likely to stick together and therefore reduce clotting. Also 1 baby apsirin a day since my first heart attack. After crawling around in the engine bay of my boat I am often bruised and bloodied. Thats just from laying on an engine and maybe get a small cut from a hose clamp. I do some street bike track days and don't really think about the bleeding issue should I fall and break a bone but probably should scale back that and street riding, but bikes really are so part of my make up I can't see stopping again.

When I was on blood thinners I did not ride. I have suffered injuries in the past when I was younger that resulted in internal bleeding that would have likely killed me if I had been on blood thinners. I got multiple opinions from different doctors, even one that rides, and the resounding advice was no riding. Fortunately I was only on them for one year and was able to resume riding once the underlying conditions were resolved.

Yeah, I had some doctors say "yes" and some say "no". I think some doctors are more likely to say "no" just to be cautious. Some doctors think you are an idiot for riding a dirt bike any time.

Very true. Most of my doctors think I am "too old" for dirt bikes. I was lucky enough to have one doctor that was a desert racer and another that was a mountain biker. Both of them agreed that the risks were high enough that they wouldn't ride if they were on blood thinners. If I was going to be on them for the rest of my life like the OP I think I would likely take a drug holiday prior to riding so I could ride occasionally. Tough decision for sure.

I’m on Xarelto, side effects can be pretty gnarly if you don’t stick to the same time every day and I’m far more sensitive to certain foods than I was before.

What dosage are you on? I was on 20mg daily for 6 months after having a PE, I dislocated my ankle in 2006 and have fragmented blood clots that collect in my lungs so I’m on them for life. My consultant has me on 10mg and said riding should be fine, there is no reversal agent but as my dosage is quite low he so he thinks my risk of bleeding out isn’t massive.

Definitely plays on your mind when riding but I couldn’t do any other hobby

What side effects with Xarelto? I took it for about 2 years, and was not religious about taking at the same time. I never had any side effects.

What GuyB said "talk to your doctor".
Every situation is different as well as where they want your INR level.
I've been on thinner for 10+ maybe 15+.
Don't ride moto since before that started.
I do ride mtb., road bike and I work.
I haven't changed any of those because of thinner.
It's more of a maybe situation, perfect storm it could be life threatening.
Reality for me is it's never been an issues.
It really has everything to do with how quick you coagulate at the site of any damage (internal or external).
Some people (in medicine) make it out to be way more "scary" than it is.

Cannot stress this enough. I have experienced this many times. First with ACL surgery, then with various injuries etc. that I mentioned in my original post.

Don’t want to sound like a smart ass but this is something you should be asking a doctor.

If you don’t have a wife, kid, dog, or anybody else in your life that depends on you, you know the risks, so do what you want. If anyone in the world is depending on you coming home from the track, listen to your doctor.

My former CEO rolled a golf cart in florida and broke a hip. Medivac chopper had to get him from the course. For some reason they couldn't find the correct hole he fell near with the ambulance so they brought in a chopper. He also had a Volvo station wagon catch on fire while he was at a stoplight. I told him he needs to take up something safer like motorcycles.

Keep on talking about something you clearly don't understand at all, it helps us know who to ignore

I think the point is that anything can happen anywhere. It's a tough decision for the OP to stop riding moto especially when you could trip and fall down the stairs or slice your finger cutting veggies for dinner...

I've been on blood thinners and I dealt with the same challenging decision. It's a tough situation and good luck to the OP

If I’m not rigid with the times I feel a bit weird, get some reflux and a bit gassy. I cant eat too sugary or too fatty foods, sometimes can’t swallow too well and if I go too far over my regular time I get a little short of breath or mild chest pains
