Glad the AMA did something but this is weak.
Reed's crime is not refusing to yield the racing line when being lapped. What Reed did was cheat maybe one million fans viewing the race of watching what we have been waiting all season for. ET and RD going bar to bar fighting for the championship. Its what race fans hope all season to see, and Reeds childish selfishness stole that away from all of us.
It hurt our sport.
Reed should be suspended for 3 races for his 3 laps of self centered actions.

If Reed was pissed at Dungy and punched him in the face between heat races, I would have no problem with it. I would still be a Reed fan. But when he decided to take away what could have been the seasons best battle from us, he told all of us to F*** Off.
So F*** you to Reed.
Dont bs you were a reed fan.

This is Vital. The debate will go on for years.
At what point do you move on from an injustice?

This! ^^^^! I was there, spent the money with my wife and kids to travel and stay there. I saw the heat race and Reeds actions that pissed Dungey off. I seen Reed trying with everything he had to stay in front of Dungey in the main for those three laps. I saw numerous blue flags literally being thrown in Reeds face. I also seen Dungey making up time on Eli on the dragons back section until the Reed episode! I'm not saying Dungey would've caught and passed Eli, but we were screwed out of watching the top 2 contenders push eachother and themselves to the brink to see who really wants this championship!! The penalty and fine on Reed is all fine and good, but he should've been blacked flag at the race immediately, to at least try to salvage a race between Eli and Ryan!

From the Rule book for all of those saying "They can't do that":

Rule Book Appendix A part A1(c-f)

c. The Race Director has the competence to pronounce sanctions against riders, team staff, officials, promoters/organizers and all the persons involved in any capacity whatsoever in an event or in the Championship.

d. The Race Director may pronounce the following penalties.
1. Warning
2. Fine
3. Lap deductions or finishing position deductions
4. Time and/or point penalties
5. Disqualification
6. Suspension
7. Probation not exceeding 12 months from the date of offence

e. Penalties incurred prior to a red flag will be assessed at the completion of the race, not during he the re-start.

f. The Race Director will always attempt to levy all penalties the day of the race. Under some circumstances it may be necessary to take more time to review all evidence and official video to make a final decision. All penalties from the Race Director must be levied by 5pm eastern standard time the Monday after the race. Under special circumstances, including but not limited to, fuel testing, anti-doping or a need to impound a motorcycle or parts, the Race Director may defer to the AMA to make a ruling outside of that timeframe.

And part A2 section c:

c. The following offenses will be subject to disciplinary action by the Race Director and/or the competent bodies. This list is provided as guidance to licensed competitors and event credential holders but does not restrict AMA from invoking penalties for other actions detrimental to the sport that are not specifically contemplated herein.
. . .
15. Failing to immediately respect and comply with operational or warning flags/lights or other signals from racing officials.
. . .

I think it was well handled, and its a fair penalty. Its not going to hurt Chad, but it will make 99% of the other riders think hard about ignoring a blue flag.

Black flagging him really wouldnt have made any difference in the race, the damage to Dungey was done after 4-5 corners.

They got it right. Now Chad can do the right thing and accept it without drama, and say he is well aware of the rules as they are written and is happy to help Asterisk with a donation.

I would stand up there and say, "I understand the rules and the penalty I have been given, and will not appeal or comment on this further. I look forward to competing next week in Seattle as I have for the last 12 (?) years"

Matthes and some others imply it's Dungey's fault for "poking" the bear and calling Chad immature. All Dungey did was prove that Chad is immature. Use to pull for Chad and wanted to see him win another one. Now, I hope he doesn't win. Not an example of someone I choose to pull for any longer...

The ONLY way I'd pull for Chad again would be for him to admit what he did and to apologize... I don't see that happening because he is immature... I hope he proves me wrong, but I doubt he will... He'll find an excuse rather than own up to his actions...
Where's that Conor McGregor meme at when you need it? I agree, I don't see Reed apologizing to anyone, ever...

He shouldnt apologize. He knew what he was doing. Owning up doesnt mean you have to apologize, he can just accept the penalty and go about his business. No apology needed or expected. He made his point, sometimes your point costs a few bucks.

I don't know about you guys, but I never saw Reed block Dungey in any way. There were times when Dungey would drop more than a second back behind Reed. It didn't look like a blocker intentionally taking away better lines from a faster rider, it looked like someone struggling to pass someone not much slower than them.

Someone said before that those three laps were Reed's fastest. I don't doubt that, and I don't doubt that he sped up in order to keep in front of Dungey. But he was just riding. Riding faster, and therefore Dungey found it hard to pass him. He did it for a bit of payback for sure, but that's not the same as intentionally blocking a faster rider.

Lappers aren't obliged to pump out slow laps. They're obliged to stay out of the way, they're not obliged to get passed.

Just like the Stewart situation last year, massively overblown.
Yep, it wasn't as bad as all the dramatic posts imply.

So we were all robbed of potentially seeing the battle of the year and possibly the momentum swing in favor of a fired up Dungey.
It caused Vitard Mayhem!

What happens if Dungey loses the title by the 3 point difference between 1st and 2nd place!
Does Reed move back to Oz?

Truth is stranger than April Fools with the Reed ruling and Microsoft announcement! Apri 1st, people would have laughed instantly, April 3rd, its true! What a difference two days make!

I think its a very fair penalty given the situation. The only thing I might have suggested differently is a $10K fine instead of $5K, mainly because Reed can afford it and the Asterisk medical crew is simply phenomenal. They were attending to Gilmore in

I wonder how much KTM complained to the AMA for them to fine Reed.

This is awesome.

Good job by the AMA. Very fair penalty given the action. Sets a very fair precedence for the sport - likely equal to about 1-4 weeks worth of pay for the average 10-20th place riders who are normally being the ones getting lapped. I've been harsh on the AMA on this subject, but ultimately they got it right IMO. It's only a slap on the wrist to Reed, but it still shows he (and his fans) was in the wrong - regardless of if he had a legit beef with Dungey or not. Can't retaliate by ignoring the blue flags.

What I do love though is Dunge made his comment on the podium, Chad didn't say shit, didn't get all tough on twitter, but he SHOWED Dungey how he felt....nothing wrong with that.

Something to be said for no talk and all action in a generation full of snowflakes
if you would really like to go and tell Ryan Dungey that hes a "special snowflake" i would pay a large some of money to see it.

It's because you are Australian and you are biased for Reed. I was at the race in person, and Reed was riding intentionally in the main race line and in some cases going out of his was to ride in lines that would slow down Dungey. The rules are very clear - they are already posted all over this website in various threads. Reed wasn't "holding his line" and "letting the faster riders pass". He road blocked him for 3 laps. He was cross jumping the first jump out of the finish line corner going from the left line to the right line, then after the ensuing rhythm section he would take the inside line on the 180 then cross jump to the outside left line. Then after the 2 dragon backs he would jump from the outside line to the inside right line. He was all over the place and most certainly "wasn't holding his line". He was definitely guilty of what he was penalized for. I get that he was pissed about what Dungey said, and he had every right to be pissed. Reed rode a great heat race and Dungey was whining over nothing. But in the main event, he proved his new nickname to be accurate - "douche douche" because he was blatantly ignoring the blue flags and intentionally trying to hold up Dungey. Then at the end of the race after it was over, Dungey made a WTF-man hand gesture to Reed and Reed gave him a little hand gesture back insinuating paybacks a bitch, he knew what he was doing.

Trying to rationalize what he did as anything other than what he was penalized for is ridiculous. I don't know how well it was shown on TV, but in person it was blatant.
