That may be the dumbest thing I've read, with regards to a bike's power? So are you saying all bikes with poor over rev and top end power are single speeds? Nice try Bob PA! Short silencers are for bottom end, plain and simple. It isnt a coincidence they were designed for SX... I know they look cooler, but that doesn't equal power or over-rev.
You may have the poorest reading comprehension here. Bikes with poor overrev can be ridden fast on more open tracks....it is called shifting. I have always preferred the power of a shorty silencer on all of my two strokes....even my current 125 (and 250)

Thanks for all your answers Kryan5, I too am very interested in the 17 250 sx.
I'm a vet and haven't raced for a few years but I'm getting back into it next year. Just interested to know how you rate your new bike's hole shot capability up against the 450's , you said you did just that on the weekend?
Vet races here are ridiculously short, so it's really all about the start. I've been a two stroke guy all my life, only ever raced a YZ 426 back in 2001 ( wasn't my bike, I raced it for a dealer that sponsored me ) . I'm trying very hard to decide between getting a new 17 ktm 450 to race and a second hand YZ 250 to practice on ( don't wanna rack up massive hours on a new 450 )' and maybe fix that 250 up a bit and also race it in the 250 class...
Or just go with one bike...the 17 250 sx... But I will need to get hole shots against pretty much all 450' to be competetive in 5 - 10 min vet races.
What would you do? Your opinion appreciated no matter what it is.

Love the bike but i'm waiting for the Husky. It is the same bike and I will install the electric start :-) I'm old!

Agreed, its a 2 stroke, the thing should be snappy and pipey. thats the way they are designed to be ridden, if you want a flat powered torq monster ride a 450. 2 strokes need to be able come up on the pipe fast and a short silencer makes it easier to get it in the meat of the power. plain and simple. pair a short silencer with a PC pipe or a fmf fatty and mix the best of both worlds.

Up here in Canada, they let the amateurs race 250 two strokes with 250 four strokes. I am too big for a 250 4 stroke (6'5" and 275), but would love to battle with the young jockeys in the 250 class. This sound like it would be the bike I need. Please provide any more info as you go. Does anyone know if the electric start can be retrofitted for sure?

Yeah I know, it's getting way outta control, it seemed worse though a couple of years ago when our dollar was worth $1.10 American and the rrp for a new 450 in the USA was about $6 k usd and the same bike here was $ 10k AUD . WTF?? With our dollar worth 1.10 of theirs?? We were getting reamed then.
You could literally hop on a plane from Aus to USA buy a new bike and go ride it while you are there., pack it up in a couple of suitcases and bring it home on the plane and it still worked out cheaper... Air fares n all!

Man those prices are a kick between the pockets. The 250 SX is $8999 in Canuck bucks, which is about $6858 USD so price is not bad. Hope to get one this weekend

Sorry about your arm. But hey... it could be worse and you can ride next weekend Tongue Thanks about the input on the 250sx. It sounds like you had fun...well, till the crash though... so far you seem happy with the bike and best of all... it is still stock. Sweet...Very nice to hear indeed. I do also have a sx 2013 and thinking about getting the new 2017. I'm skeptical with the whole air fork at this time. I wanna wait for more testing and reviews on the bike before going to the dealership to get one. About the motor... compared to the 13... mid and top... do you think it has the same, less or more power than the 13? I loved the power of the 13 though. Smile

That last question is hard to answer. It def. has more bottom. Mid and top i'm not sure, It's hard to compare a 4 year old bike that was well ridden to a brand new engine even with doing top and bottom ends. Comparing my 2013 as I sold it and the 2017. The 2017 has way more power all around for what thats worth.

As far as being hesitant because of the forks. I don't really feel like that should hold you back. As i said before I am happy with them, but they will need some testing and adjusting. What fork doesn't. These are night and day better than the 4cs forks. I also feel that with some massaging they will be just as good or better than our CC forks on the 2013(which I had done by Factory Connection and LOVED)
Any update on your bike? Particularly interested in how the suspension is working now (assuming you've had some time to tweak it). Not many other ride reports out there right now.

Unfortunately I haven't got to ride since the last race. I bought a bunch of property to ride and ironically i have been putting in to much time working on the property to ride...

To make matter worse I plan on racing this weekend after not riding for a month. Don't expect much of a review after this ride! haha

On the plus side the kids are having a blast on their new track!

Got to ride mine about 30 minutes. Mine was very rich on bottom but felt lean on top. I didn't have a smaller pilot so raised the clip to #2 position and put in 450 main. Unfortunately after tightening carb clamps I raised up and pinched a nerve in my back so haven't got to ride it again. I let 5 other guys including an ex national pro and Arenacross champion ride it tho and they all said that fixed the jetting and it ran great. They all liked the suspension a lot on stock settings and the pro said he thought forks could be softened up a little. I had them at 147psi, going to start with that this weekend and with a zipty lower pressure until it bottoms.

I have 2 hours on mine. 1 thing I can say is keep a eye on the oil fill cap. I had a tad bit of oil on the side cover and looked closer and my cap was a turn or two loose. Could have been my big ass feet hitting it but never had the problem before.
Jetting wise the bottom was rich so I moved the clip to the 2nd spot from the top and it has it almost perfect. And obviously everything else you did with the new bikes. Noticed my spokes needed some tweaking but other than that this thing rips right out of the crate. I am looking at exhaust systems at the moment can't wait to hear it sing.

2017 250sx owners, are you noticing the short gear ratio between 2 & 3rd gears like MXA mentioned?

According to them, the internal gear ratios have not been changed from the previous model years. I already feel like to ratios on my 2011 could have been better and hope KTM will address this issue since it's not easily remedied.

Yes please... b-Evans and wide open wally... what is your input on that second and third gear ratio. MXA recommends going from 50 to a 49 rear sprocket (I might be wrong with the numbers) so that it will make the rider to be able to use 2ND longer before shifting to 3rd. Well... I actually would rather use 3rd and 4th more than 2nd and 3rd. I have a 2013 250sx and I lowered the gearing going one tooth higher on the rear, combined with a flywheel and a pro circuit pipe... I was almost the whole time on 3rd and 4th. The bIke was and felt fast and on the sweet spot of the power curve. Perhaps trying the same combo on the new 2017 without changing the gearing... just the flywheel and the pipe, would alow the bike Rev higher and use 3rd more all around the track. Again guys... keep us updated with the bikes. Thanks

I was at a KTM demo day yesterday. They didn't have the 2017 SX 250 there... The demand on them is probably so high that they couldn't provide one.

Well i got to try the 350. Very fun bike, especially if you ride with small gears and high revs. But i will stick with a 450 since i ride at low RPMs.

The traction control also works surprisingly well!

Raced this past weekend. I've made no changes to the bike. Left the jetting and needle at stock. Sweet spot for forks seems to be about 139 for me. I don't remember the clickers. I have them wrote down. 2nd place start and holeshot against 450s. I have no complaints or reason to change anything. I am still very happy with the complete package, handling to power to suspension....

I second that, shorty's are a great way to loose 1000 rpm of over-rev but that's about it.

Only have 3.9 hours on mine yet, but here's my thoughts! It is a bit short, but I didn't feel it was awfully short. Waiting for a 49T rear sprocket and some other parts (I'm pimpin' my ride - wheels, other parts and bling).

The bike rocks! Awesome engine, smooth suspension and soo light! Can't go wrong. I felt the stock pipe and silencer was more than good enough. Awesome bike!

I hear that a lot but didn't all the factory 2 strokes run shorty's. Also blackdiamond, don't you have a shorty on your cr?
When mxa did a pipe shootout for the yz250 both fmf and pc sent their shorty mufflers with their pipes. If the shorty mufflers weren't as good wouldn't they have sent the longer ones?
I am looking at a pipe and muffler set up for my yz250, just want to work out whether to go shorty or standard length
