A local guy here used to race an XR250, maybe an 01? I took it for a few laps and it was a blast! I was surprised how capable it was. Felt like a slow, heavy, poorly suspended 125 with a rag in the airbox, but you could ride the wheels off of it. They're a great sleeper bike!

Yea- it sort of is much fairer to imagine the 70's / 80's tracks being used for the comparison. Bet the oldies would get smoked though at the start and straights maybe but with the right rider could still seriously rip.
Guess exceptional riders like Hannah didn't get to where they got for no reason!

Caught and passed my pal on his 2015 250SX while riding another mate's 1985 CR250 earlier this year.

30 years old, and really, the only noticeably worse aspects were suspension and front brake. Rear drum was fine, and cornering, if anything, was better.

A few years back, at a local off road race, a veteran ex-pro won the overall ahead of quite a few fast locals on brand new bikes...riding an '82 175 SWM.

Thats defo a good canditate to show up on that thing and beat the newer bikes - complete with the lights and crazy orange plastics! I guess you would embarrass them more still if the bike was kind of 'odd looking' also. Could try a Rokon or something maybe?
Hahah- surprised more people are not trying to race real oldies against newer bikes- just for the crack, especially if you did beat them! Spares maybe an issue I guess also.

I often ride my 1980 CR250 in modern races..... I'm never last.... usually top 10 in whatver class they put me in.
One of our friends refuses to ride modern bikes... he rides a '73 CR250.... he makes a lot of younger men on new bikes look very, very stupid......

The bikes from the late 70's, 80's and 90's are all so much more capable than most people think.. The "great leaps" in technology that the manufacture's bring out each year, are actually more like teeny tiny little steps... sometimes backwards. They gotta change something, anything, to "look" like they are "progressing"... Gotta give the media some thing to write about... The fact of the matter is pretty much ANY bike from the last 30 yrs, with a decent suspension set up, a well built motor, and that's put together right is a very capable machine.

Wow! A '73 CR250, that is something else. As you say I bet ' he makes the younger men on new bikes look very, very stupid' and bet he gets a right blast (and gloat) out of it also!

Yea- surprised more people are not racing oldies, would be great to watch. Everybody loves an underdog, type of thing.

While rollin up to staging for my 1st 40+ expert moto last weekend I discovered that i had gotten a front flat during the last practice session. I ran back to trailer to try to fix it but ran out of time. So I pulled out the 89cr250 and rushed staight up to the gate. Proceeded to pull a 2nd place start and after makin a mistake early in 1st lap to drop to 4th finished a respectable 3rd in the moto out of about 12 riders. Since i rode it in 1st moto had to do it again in 2nd so again great start only to push the 20 year old front tire in first turn. lol 2nd to last. Picked it up and went from last to 5th in moto 2. One spot out of the money but hey made 30 bucks for 3rd in moto 1 and took 3rd overall with a 3/5 score. Not bad and sure was fun beatin new 450s on a 27 year old bike.

In 2003 a guy showed up on 1994 wr250 plated for the street, he rode it to the race. Came out in the Senior A and put us in our place. He didn't get the start because his rear tire was nearly knobless but passed his way to the front....kinda sucked as he went past, I could hear the license plate rattling on the rear fender, brake light in the corners...geez.

For all you KDX fans there was a gentleman named Darius Grambly (sp) that won almost every over 30 class race in Texas in the 80's on a KDX....no joke. Those bikes were legit!

edit Darius Gramley...he raced LL too.

In all honesty, I don't know, but it's clear that there's fast pros out there that can absolutely shred on mid 80's bikes, so I'd have to imagine that's about where the line would be. How many jumps on your local track?
