I always had a blast giving all my buddies fits riding my girlfriends KX 100 on practice days.

I only ride my 1981 Maico 250 and regularly go practicing at my local track which is certainly not an 'ideal' twinshock track, and give riders on the latest and greatest a run for their money!

I beat my buddies on my 84 all the time. Well, to the first turn at least. Getting that underbraked bastard slowed down is quite a chore.

I know a fellow vital poster and his younger brother who do/did it quite frequently on both a 1981 YZ465, and 1974 CR250 depending on the track/jumps. The 465 could handle any of the jumps with the right pilot, and the CR with Ohlins rear shocks, reed valve, and electronic ignition hangs pretty well, and hits jumps bigger than you may think.

This is precisely the reason I am looking for a good WR500 restore candidate.

Why would you restore one when you could just buy this one from Shue in Old School??? http://www.vitalmx.com/forums/Old-School-Moto,22/WR-500,1303149

He's got a pretty reasonable price on it too.

Someone mentioned a 74 CR250 going pretty big? 4 inches will get you pretty far....lol

You're a Moran for thinking you could ever beat your buddies without air forks and efi and multiple ignition maps and holeshot devices. God help you should you decide go choose something that doesn't take 4 spins of the crank. Wtf man.

In all honesty, I don't know, but it's clear that there's fast pros out there that can absolutely shred on mid 80's bikes, so I'd have to imagine that's about where the line would be. How many jumps on your local track?
In your 60k toyhauler or 200k Diesel Pusher
You guys have clearly missed the most important aspect of what makes a good bike around here lately....Having A-kit/Cone Valves/or special coatings is the only way to be competitive!

Dammit, why does that stuff all have to be so cool? I want everything I just listed, so????

thats a great shot. I've seen them in person do it, and done a little myself. However I'm still impressed, shocked, and in awe everytime I see it. Certainly more capable then most give credit for and certainly moreso than I usually feel like pushing it. Smile

I'm just thinking what bike would your friends absolutely laugh in your face if you tried to race - but you would be able to beat them if it was set up right. Some old dogs were just too bad to make good, but not all right?

That's a great video! Not sure how I missed that kid and that bike. I have an 88 CR250 that I have embarrassed a couple of my friends on but seeing how I have friends that have embarrassed me on older bikes not sure it was "good" enough for this thread.

Wish I documented the life of the bike better. My dad bought it from Tony Graves around the end of '89 kinda roached he did decent restore/freshen up for the time period but he rode it and rode it often and hard so when I took it over it was even more roached took me 5-6 year of slowly playing around with it and got it to showroomish with modern flare and up grades. Would have made a heck of a build thread.

How fast are you compared to your friends: http://www.dirtrider.com/tests/141_0605_beating_dirt_bike_pro
Those old 70's 250CR's seem to be the weapon against the younger bikes! That picture above sort of proves it! About 3 people have posted how quick some riders go on these old 70's CR250's. Seems also that it is totally possible and even easier to race an 80's bike with also a good embarrassment rate.

That article about Ryno Hughes riding the different bikes was really good and interesting. I reckon a pro/ serious rider can probably ride a 70's to modern bike/ moped and god knows what that may embarrass so many people. Depends on skill of the rider to a big degree rather than the bike?
