The "Marijuana at the track" post made me get pissed off about something I see at the track daily, I get over it by the time I get home so I don't mention it.

Are you stoked to see a kid go by you, or do you feel challenged by this?

I see guys that just tuck in behind and hang for a min and are genuinely stoked or even ride over and high five a kid etc and that is what it's about! It's a cool thing that young and old or any age love the same thing and appreciate the stoke.

But YOU!! YOU know who you are! Why the F*&k do YOU look over and see a small kid, YOU grab a hand full of 450, ride WAY over your head to try and race the kid? Leave them alone, they don't want to race you, they are just trying to do a moto and be safe! Safe from you grenading yourself into them riding over your head.

Guy number 1 is so much cooler than guy 2. Be guy #1 and let kids ride / enjoy a quick moment / high five etc etc.

Don't be a dick.

I'm stoked when they go by. I wish I was as good as that kid when I was young or old. I'm definitely the guy giving the kid a high 5 but that's just me..

Maybe it's because I'm high

These are the same guys who will accelerate when you turn on your blinker to switch lanes. Probably lacking in some areas and are trying to compensate with their ego. "not today little boy"

When a supermini passes me all i think is, " goddamn that kid can rip, good for him. "

Honestly I do my best to avoid younger riders at any cost on the track.

I know that a lot of those kids can whoop my ass speed wise, but with them being younger they don't necessarily have the experience that is earned after riding for 15+ years...Sure they know how to scrub and twist the throttle, but when stuff starts getting hairy, they tend to not make the best decisions. With that in mind, I always give the younger guys a wide berth wether I am passing, or am being passed.

Just my personal opinion

Guilty. Only ever done it once and the little dude went down. Lesson learnt for me

Dumb thing to do, it's all fun until the little dude gets hurt. It's also the same with adults racing on a practise track, does my head in.

Let me get this straight.....you are complaining about slower, more experienced old guys being a danger to the fast, less experienced youngsters? I suppose that happens....sometimes......

Happened this year to me. Heard the little ripper behind me and he blew by me like I was standing still. Turns out it was my boy on his super mini.... Oh how the tides of changed......

Just punt the little shit in the next corner and you're good.

One of my former students at my racing camp just beat me and a lot of other fast guys to take home his first Canadian Title. I was the first to congratulate him after the race. He worked hard, rode his ass off and spend his days off practicing while I worked 9-5. I'm proud of the kid. But also a little jealous

Every track should have organized practice. No reason for old guys on 450's to ever be on the track at the same time as kids on little bikes. Recipe for disaster. I enjoy the hell out of watching fast kids on little bikes hucking jumps and ripping around the track but there should never be a big bike out there at the same time.

Kid is a loose term. I'm 30 and kids on 250f's are still kids after all.

If a fast person comes by me I may try and tuck in and keep up for a few sections but I know that eventually I'll have to throw in the towel. I never do it to "show them what's up" I just do it to A. push myself a little and B. try and see/know what it's like to go THAT fast. The quintessential carrot on a stick if you will. After a few sections I go back to my normal speed before I pump up or they disappear on the horizon.

I always look out for them and always get out of the way when I can but it's fun to chase a Bisceglia or Cunningham for 2 turns before your world comes crashing down around you. Laughing

this happens to my son a lot. hes big for his age and on a 250 f. when it happens he will ride over to me usually followed by said offender. once he takes his helmet off they see how young he is. I look at them and say really you have problems with a kid? that usually brings them down to earth and they ride off with no further issue.

I was practicing at Baja one day a few years back and a youngster (on a 250f) was chasing me down and I was able to out run him for a couple straights on my 450 but then I started breathing hard and moved over for him. I took the wide line into the next turn and turned her down a notch and the little asshole bangs into me like Dungey hit Stewart in A1. Since my fighting weight is about 220 he only moved me over a little and pissed me off! I rode a massive adrenaline rush for half a lap and then slowed back down cause I was never gonna catch the f-cker...lol!

If he's 12 or under I usually go over to him (or her) in the pits and punch him (or her) square in the mouth. I can guarantee that the next time they see you on the track, they wont dare pass you.....

Funny you mention this, I have the inverse problem, fast kids thinking that it's fun to race that 450 guy. I get it, they are as fast as me and only 13 yo but I also just want to do my motos and go back home safely.

Luckily I'm an adult and don't engage in their game.

Fortunately, I'm fast enough that it is very rare that such a thing happens. A LL Supermini champ could probably wax me, but you know how often those guys come around.

When they do, I figure it's a good lesson for that type of rider when I send him into the hay bales. Haha, J/K.

I'm the guy who gets railed in the last turn of the final moto at the Vet Worlds for the overall, chases you back to your pits to congratulate you on a textbook stuff while you run for a weapon to defend yourself - only to get hit with a high 5.

I'm the guy that yells NICE PASS in the next corner after getting blocked, stuffed or railed.

If I get roosted by some kid going by me that's my bad and I totally dig watching it!

I DO get a little irritated when a Nat level pro almost takes me out while doing motos on a public practice track when I'm consciously trying to stay out of his way and he has plenty of room - buts that's a diff topic

I appreciate good moto when it's done against me more than when I see it.

I had a "kid" of the teenager age pull in behind me on a regular practice day while I was in the middle of a 30 to 40 minute session, him on a 250f, me on a 250 smoker... I held my lines, kept my pace, and he couldn't get around. After a couple laps be pulled off. Half a lap later he jumps on the track again right in front of me, I patiently followed him, again keeping my regular pace, and half a lap after cutting in front of me he tipped it over Laughing

That's got to be one of the coolest things for a moto dad - When he realizes his kid is faster than he is..

I always ask "So can he beat you yet" to my friends with kids that ride.

Still remember the first time I passed my dad on the main track, soon as we got back to the truck he said, " fuck, getting old sucks." haha

it is a cool feeling, especially when its your own kid and the changing of the guard but after that you need to ride the correct practice. I feel umcomfortable as hell riding int with the kids and spend more time looking over my shoulder even when I hold my line. most of the time this only happens the first practice of the day when its "open track " until there are enough people in each group to split things up.what does piss me off is when fast kids ride in the vet practices

I always feel bad roosting them with my 450 so let off, but if they have caught me they were going to pass me, im not gonna give them a handful. I remember this 85cc two stroke passed me on an 80ft tabletop and he whipped the bike flat and was looking back at me like a boss, I was so stoked for the the little ripper.

I'm the first type of guy. At age 35, I still continue to learn and I'm not a slow rider, but I am not "fast". I moto with a few local kids on practice days, but only the kids on big bikes and only the ones I know. Those kids don't get tired and they ride with a kind of aggression that I really admire. It's a lot of fun since I'm on a 125 most of the time. It's really cool to see those kids move up through the classes as they get stronger/faster/smarter.

Sometimes people want to moto with me when I'm just trying to practice something specific. It can be frustrating, but they are probably just trying to have fun or feel a little competition. I just pull over, find a gap and go back to doing my thing.

If I hear a mini come up on me my thoughts are he is hauling I'm moving. I mean he would have to be to catch me. That's how my mind works.

Depends on who's kid it is. I'm not the fastest cat on the track anymore but I am also nowhere near the slowest. So sometimes when i'm doing cool down laps or just goof off laps I'll let a certain kid or two catch up just to roost them and walk away. Someday they may be able to pass me for good in which turnabout will be fair play.

I literally can not grasp the concept of wanting to race someone on a practice day, kid or adult.

I do not get it.

I have no problem with kids passing me.. They should. I get more twisted by guys I use to beat, passing me because they didn't quit racing for 20 years like I did.. But I use it as motivation and don't have a hissy fit.

Not the exact situation but, I showed up to a track I had never ridden before. It was full of local guys that only ride this track and never anywhere else. I start my "check the track laps" and get alessied by a local trying to piss on his territory. So after getting hit about 3 times while doing 2nd gear warm up laps it was time for fun. Judging by this guys riding style I guessed that I was faster. So for every lap he was out there I would stalk him pass him and then let him by and repeat it for about 5 laps. The next time we were out I passed him left him and lapped him and was never t-boned again. That being said I hate being that guy that toys with people he don't know and never understand when someone comes up on a guy putting around the out side edge of the track why make the effort to punt him off the track. There is definitely no reason for a big bike to try to battle a mini.

I'll share my stories. I'm 33 now and don't ride much any more, my dreams of turning pro have been over for close to a decade.
But when I was younger and just graduated high school, my dreams were big and I knew what I wanted. Long story short I moved to SoCal in the off season to train and recuperate from knee surgery. I thought, this is it I'm going to turn pro soon, and my career will be on the way!
Now I was definitely no JS7, or RC4, I was pretty quick, and a local hero but my biggest issue was always my fitness and arm pump.
I remember the first time I went to Glen Helen for practice day. Did not feel comfortable at all. An east coast kid coming from primo dirt to that crap out in san Bernadino, was just eye opening, and took me months till I felt at all comfy on that track. But one day I was there trying to burn the laps and get faster. I all of a sudden heard some kid on a 85cc just haulin the mail behind me, I was like WTF...no one should be passing me on a 85cc! Well, came up to the big table that was there back then, ruts all the way up the face, and ruts all the way down the landing, that lasted for about 40ft after the transition. Needless to say I was not jumping that thing!!! waaaay outa my skill level, even back then. But the kid hucked it, right over top of me. Gave a little whip even, and landed just pinned hanging over the back fender haulin through the ruts. I thought, "man who the hell is that?" well I glanced up, and I could just read the kids last name on the jersey....it said, Villopoto!!!
I seriously, not even joking, almost packed it in right after that, and called it quits...Maybe I should have, would have saved me a lot of headache and injurySmile

I recall being the kid a couple times in the mud 90's; thought it was cool when a guy that chased me for a couple laps on a 250 stopped to say he couldn't believe how fast me and my YZ80 was.
