Can a liver swell after getting hit?

I know , I know.....don't ask for medical advice on here......and I'm not.

Just a quick question. On my right side , right below my rib cage and lung I have something swollen to about 1/2 the size of a fist. At first I thought I must of banged my ribs up a little again , but that doesn't seem to be the case. I had a stupid little wreck last week and got the wind knocked out of me pretty good. And from what I see on anatomy drawings it looks like that's where my liver is.

If you get hit hard enough in the liver , can it swell like any other muscle? This sucker aches and I'm taking the weekend off from riding anyways because of it.

Yes. When I played high school football, one of my teammates took a hit and endured a small rupture in his liver. Other than a bit of nagging pain, he did not realize it was a major problem until the swelling began to occur a couple days later.

You should take the advice and go get checked out, just to be safe. Internal injuries like that are nothing to mess around with and you shouldn't "wait-it-out"

ps... be smart and get it checked. i ruptured (broke in half) my spleen and thought it was just broken ribs. when i got to the hospital 2 hours later i had lost almost 2 pints and had emergency surgery. don't pull a peelout, bro

I'm sure you didn't mean to say it that way, but the liver ain't no muscle. As an organ it's blood-vessel intensive. Get it checked today.

Jeffs probably already checked into the hospital but...if its his liver would there be a good chance of peeing blood? He said he hurt it last week. Does brownish pee not full on red mean there is some blood in there?

Never peed blood so just asking.

My Son fell at Washougal a few weekends ago. Had trouble breathing so we went to the ER. They found the bulge in his side, did a CT scan and found the liver was lacerated... along with a collapsed lung, five broken ribs and a broken shoulder...
Anyhoo had he not had trouble breathing we probably would not have went to the hospital right away. He could have bled to death...
Have it checked ASAP

You'd be pissing blood. It may or may not be visible depending on the severity. I've had it both ways. When mine was visible it was an orange tint.

You could say I'm kind of a hypochondriac, but I usually don't fuck around if something isn't right or doesn't feel right. I woke up in the middle of the night like 2 months ago with crazy pain in my sternum and my right pec muscle was twitching and shit. My sternum pops about once per day so I thought I finally fucked it up. Went to the doctor later that day (some old gray fuck who wasn't my regular doc) and basically said his sternum pops everyday too and that I was imagining it, but that I shouldn't lift weights for like 6 weeks. Okay, thanks, asshole. Shit still hurts, just not like it did that one night.

To answer your question, I dunno man, drink some beer on it.

2x. I did the same thing and though it was just ribs. My mom forced me to go in and they almost put me under surgery as well. Luckily I was a kid so they held off and it was able to heal itself, but it was still a level 5 rupture.

It's probably nothing, but get it checked out. It won't hurt to have someone look at it but it could be a lot worse to leave it be. Even if it is only slightly lacerated, it will likely heal on its own but if it is hit again any time soon after that it will not. Best to get it checked out and follow any instruction they give you, internal injuries are nothing to mess with.

It sure as hell can! I had smashed my liver when I crashed pretty hard on the dirtscooter, skipped across the ground like a flat stone on a lake.) It blew up, and almost ruptured according to the ER people. Diagnosed with a big ol hematoma on my liver. Was sore as shit for a couple weeks.

I talked to Jeff and he's flattered by all your support. The wreck happened 6 days ago, so if there were internal bleeding or severe trauma I'm guessing it would've reared its ugly head by now.

I'm guessing its a hematoma or contractions for an alien chest birth.

Got a handlebar to the abdomen back in '83. It hurt but I figured I would tough it out. The pain got worse and the swelling increased. About 8 hours later I went to the bathroom and was pissing blood. Ended up being a lacerated kidney. Go see a doctor.

I have only seen 1 MX guy in the two ER's Im in in the last couple of years. More "informal" consult visits from my own son than actual MX injuries! They stay at home when hurt, but unlike the VAST majority of my ER pts, they would actually have a real issue!
