MDMCG Added a reply to J Mart recovery.

10/8/2020 4:44pm
His first surgery was at the local trauma center after his crash. When his surgery didn't take, he traveled to Vail, CO and had a revision which worked. Not sure about anything more than that, but if you're on opiates for a long time dependence can certainly play a roll in the recovery process. Scary stuff.

MDMCG Added a comment about news story Austin Forkner Releases Update on Condition

Ouch man. As a practicing MD that's gnarly. High grade spleen lacerations are relatively common, but devitalizing your pancreas is a whole different beast. Glad you're alive and out of the ICU.

MDMCG Added a reply to how do you improve cardio ?

Cycling. No secret here. It's why the pros spend more time on a bicycle than a dirt bike. 10-15 hours/week here, but I'm racing mtn bikes these days instead of dirt bikes.

MDMCG Added a reply to Staying Well Hydrated

Hard to stuff down and tolerate a sweet potato, pickled food (although pickle juice is often available), etc while racing. As a doctor I can tell you that there are too numerous to count examples of patients becoming hyponatremic and seizing from hydrating only with water. The energy reserves that are needed for a full-gas sprint for 2 minutes is...

Stop drinking all water. There are multiple hydration mixes out there (Trailmix, SIS, Hammer, Scratch, etc). It's what we use mtn biking. I just did a 40 mile, 4500' climbing mtn bike race in 3 hours on that stuff. It's excellent. I used to get crushed by only drinking water and taking in a little food.

Depends on where you live and what your trails are like. We have 150 miles and 5k vert in our neighborhood. It even offers sustained climbs for hours. #Mtnbikesrule.

Orbital rim, nasal, and likely a laforte fracture subtype. Add that to him being on a ventilator for a week or so and he’s not racing for 6 months.

I send a few a day to the OR. These come in 6 types and the complications thereof depend on the grade. We close most of these on day 1 instead of using an ex fix.

MDMCG Added a reply to PRP and/or stem cell for meniscus and ACL?

Cadaver grafts are the weakest. About 75% of the native graft. Hamstring is second best. Patella is the strongest, which is why we encourage young athletes to go that direction. Is rehab harder? Sure is, but I’ll suffer s little linger to have a better graft....

MDMCG Added a reply to 50% displaced humerous - Doctor opinions?

3/23/2018 11:39am
That’s an impacted humeral neck fracture. Fixing that is 50:50 based on age and activity level. We fix a lot of those where I work to make it perfect and to allow for a quicker recovery. It does have drawbacks and risks though... also, his growth plates are open which may change their take on the matter....

MDMCG Added a reply to Torn ACL - to repair or not?

2/5/2018 6:59pm
This is not true. Patellla grafts are the standard for all athletes. NFL, Soccer, US ski team, etc. I work at a world renowned ortho hospital and send people to the OR daily. Cadaver grafts have about 75% strength. Patella is over 90% when compared vs native ligament. Get a good surg on and get the right graft, Come to...

I'm a doc: 1. Get it done. You have the unhappy triad. You'll end up with a knee replacement in the next few years if you don't get it done 2. Best graft is the patella tendon graft. # 2 is hamstring. # 3 is cadaver. This is in regards to failure rates and what gets you closest to your...
