i'm literally relieved because i was expecting to see massive disfigurement. Holy swelling tho. I'm glad to see him on the mend and wishing speedy recovery for him.

side note: i had a friend get in car accident and broke many bones in his face and broke his skull. The broken skull saved his life as the swelling he got afterwards was relieved by it. When i went to see him his head was like a basketball. He recovered and went on to live healthy life. so scary at first tho.

Wow.. hate it for the young man. Happy things are headed in the right direction

Yeah he not going to be doing anything for couple month. But at least its just bones and they'll heal and he will make a full recovery. Looks like they went in above his ears too to fix him from that pic.

I expected much worse, with people speculating that the footpeg was what did a lot of the damage. Great to hear that he’s doing better.

Just reread my post and saw how that came across, I guess I meant to say I expected more, uh... superficial damage, you could say. Not trying to downplay the severity of his injuries at all, it’s obviously extremely serious. I just heard the footpeg speculation and my mind envisioned the worst.
I know what you were saying. I actually had a similar injury back around '98. When I heard about the footpeg, I imagined skin being shredded along w/ the bones and it would be horrific. He does look AWFUL...yet as with most things...it could be worse. In this case, he could be dead.

Get well soon, amigo.

I had a facial fracture deal and it was awful. They went in through my gum line to fix...my shattered eye socket. I still don't know how they did that, but it did account for the fact that my face swelled so much it was touching my shoulder. Doc explained that they basically lift your entire face up away from your skull, do their thing, and then put it back. That's no jok.

Not a single scar on my face...cause they're all in my mouth. Good times. Let me tell you how much fun it is to go to the dentist and have him try to numb my mouth. Lordy...

I have had very similar injuries, not necessarily as bad, but I will tell you the hardest part of my recovery was eye strength. I broke my orbital bone, jaw, nose, and cracked my skull. I was able to return to everyday life very quickly and I was driving a car regularly no problem. What I realized though as soon as I got back on my bike (about 8 weeks after the wreck) was that I couldn’t see, or focus, going any faster than second gear, it took about 5 months to even feel comfortable going fast again, and another 4 months or so to be back to 100% speed (local Texas pro). I know Weston’s injuries are way worse than mine, I just wanted to share some insight to the recovery time/process.

A1? I'd be surprised if he's even on a bike by then. Big difference between everyday tasks and training, especially with facial injuries.

Regaining strength for daily living will take time, doubt he'll line up for A1, but bet he's thankful to be able to watch it from the comfort of his own home. Whoever hit the dislike on the OP...damn.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he chills for a good 12 months.

One of the unknowns here is how quickly Weston will acquire clear vision. My brother had similar (but not as severe) injuries a couple of years ago including a broken orbital. He had to go through two eye surgeries. The second was to shim out the eyeball itself, because it had sunk 0.125" deeper into his socket, causing severe double vision. Took him quite awhile to be able to see without getting dizzy after all was said and done.

This sport and motorcycle sport in general- Road racing especially can be so damn brutal. Had a conversation with my sister today- both of us said if we had kids we wouldn't want them to do it even though most of my family did for years and loved it.

Anyway- not really relevant- people do it and love it and will continue to do it.

Heal up Weston and go give em hell!

Orbital rim, nasal, and likely a laforte fracture subtype. Add that to him being on a ventilator for a week or so and he’s not racing for 6 months.

This is what I’m still praying about—he does look great after all he went through, he’s tough as nails, just want the vision to be normal, too! You got this WP40!

Jeez.....I hope your recovery is going well. Looks painful but you have a great attitude. Are you back riding and 100%?

The biggest Bummer about this whole situation is he had a great off season was getting some gate drops and was going to be super prepared coming into A1. I was excited to see what he was going to be able to accomplishSad

I know he wants to get home as quick as possible, but flying with that kind of head swelling will be miserable. I’ve flown a quick trip Sacramento to San Diego with a sinus infection and that was a brutal hour long flight, it felt like my head was going to explode.

I can’t imagine a trans Atlantic flight with broken facial bones and the amount of throbbing it will have. Weston’s a tough guy so he will handle it, but pain in the head is torture you can’t escape from. i hope he gets the good stuff before his flight and he can sleep through the altitude.

I was expecting 5x worse. He looks great considering the extent of his injuries.

The critical issue for Weston will be his eyes. Orbital fractures can disrupt the fine functionality of the muscles that control the eye. This can be a career ender for an athlete. Best of luck to him.

That's brutal, best wishes to him for a speedy recovery. Hopefully he recovers enough both physically and mentally to race at the top level again.

He's looking good IMO, he'll probably offer to push the plane off the gate, lol. Welcome home WP, family and friends. Oh, thanks for the update Mav.

So relieved to see him up and looking not so bad. Obviously the damage is brutal but based on the lack of information that was coming out, I was expecting it to be far worse. Became a huge fan of his in the #40 privateer suzuki days, and hes actually the only rider i cared to get a signed poster from.

On a similar note, has anyone seen the movie Vanilla Sky? Basically about a dude whos girlfriend/side-piece drives off a bridge with him in the car, and his face is horribly disfigured. As soon as I heard the news about Weston that movie came to mind and the lack of news had me expecting the worst. Sooooo glad he looks to be mostly ok

It looks kinda like his right eye is aiming off a bit maybe? I hope not. Man, poor guy. Talk about a beating.

Get well soon Weston!

Gotta remember that his swelling is still brutal, things will start to come back down in the following weeks especially around his eyes and cheeks. Glad to see him standing and with some good company.

I hope he takes a bit of time off before ever thinking about racing, just sit back and enjoy your family and put everything in perspective.

Seeing Weston in that picture standing is heart warming.
The guy must be made out of steel and the competion better watch out when the big man fully recovers.
Go Weston!
